Ah well done "lobster*'s DD.

I share your disquiet re Durham's expansion goodbye. Another 1000 self catering places this year alone.

Exeter have been quick off the mark with offers for at least two years now. DD1 asked admissions at an Exeter open day what they like to see in a biosciences PS and was told that they receive too many applications to read the PS. At least they were honest!

goodbyestranger · 23/10/2019 21:18

Good news He'sMyLobster.

Is it really 1000 places at Durham? Shock I hadn't clocked it was that many, I just knew it was a lot - and that meanwhile domestic staff are being made redundant. I'll be in Durham on Saturday to see DS and I do quite like the waves of students milling about in the streets and at the sports pitches but the general impression is of overwhelming numbers compared to my day.

seedybird · 23/10/2019 21:42

May I join in?

DD's applied to Oxford, Imperial, UCL, Bristol and Southampton. She's doing 4 "A" Levels - Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Latin. Her form was submitted last Monday and so far, she's had acknowledgements from every one and an offer from Bristol this evening of ABB. So exciting that she has one offer! Grin I might actually sleep a little better tonight now. Wink I think I'm definitely going to need some hand-holding as this is my first DC to apply to uni and my nerves are shredded already Grin.

Ironoaks · 23/10/2019 21:53

seedybird congratulations to her on the Bristol offer.

sandybayley · 23/10/2019 22:05

Great news @seedybird - similar choices and A Levels to DS1. What's the course?

aibutohavethisusername · 23/10/2019 22:28

Hi seedybird great news on the offer. What is your daughter looking to study?

MarchingFrogs · 24/10/2019 01:16

Deadline all over England,

The national deadline for the secondary transfer CAF submission is October 31st, which is Thursday, not Friday. Does London get an extra day?

Pepermintea · 24/10/2019 10:20

Congratulations to Seedybird and Lobsters DD on their offers!

DS also got his first offer last night - from Nottingham. Tbh I think I was more excited than he was!

ThingDoer · 24/10/2019 10:32

Just to pop in our experience too. Dd put her form in last week and within 48 hours had offers from both Newcastle and Glasgow, which she's very chuffed about. Waiting to hear from Edinburgh, Aberdeen (who both say after January, maybe March, and have acknowledged receipt) and Manchester Met.

She's doing Sociology, Geography, History A levels and Pre-U in Global Perspectives. Predicted ABB and M1. Offer from Glasgow was ABB and Newcastle BBC for Sociology.

aibutohavethisusername · 24/10/2019 12:55

Great news pepermintea and thingdoer

ifonly4 · 24/10/2019 14:49

DD had applied this time last year. She had some friends who'd heard from all five unis within two weeks, but her first offer arrived mid November, with the last one (Durham who keep a lot of them waiting) end February. Just want to say to your DC don't be disheartened if you have to wait, she still received five offers.

Danny2894 · 25/10/2019 07:07

NTU accommodation..my daughter is living in a 10 room flat at Gill Street South.

LIZS · 25/10/2019 08:39

@Hoghgyni RHUL has an online open day next week. Ds finished there earlier this year.

Hoghgyni · 25/10/2019 13:30

Only looking at the buildings LIZS. A friend took geology there years ago. It is rather beautiful, but London was ruled out before DD even started filling in her forms.

HesMyLobster · 25/10/2019 14:57

I was hoping DD might like Royal Holloway but she was another who wouldn't consider London unis.
It's just so pretty. Her close friend just got an offer from them, so she might be spending some time there visiting at least!

DD got received an offer from Birmingham today! That's her first 2 offers from her 2 favourites - she is buzzing! Grin

Hoghgyni · 25/10/2019 16:38

Excellent news on the offers.

MillicentMartha · 25/10/2019 17:08

My boyfriend in 1983 went to Royal Holloway to do biomed. I wonder what he’s doing now...Blush

My daughter is in her first year at Manchester and received an early offer for English. Her friend was interviewed for Politics and German but it wasn't in anyway arduous. Making sure you're a happy fit with them. She's really enjoying herself and is coming home tomorrow as it's reading week.

thewomanontheshore · 25/10/2019 18:10

LIZS - can I ask what your ds thinks of Royal Holloway? I can see it becoming Dd's reserve choice. They've given her a lower offer than York. I imagine it's an expensive place to live?

LIZS · 25/10/2019 18:19

He really enjoyed it, although nightlife etc is relatively low key (similar to York). Rental can be expensive, he paid around £300 pcm for a room sharing house with 3 others within 20 min walk of campus. Safe area, compact campus, guaranteed first year accommodation ( although some is a bus ride/longish walk away usually the "choice" of those via clearing, access to London. What subject is she looking for?

thewomanontheshore · 25/10/2019 18:33

Sounds good. She's not a nightlife type. Has applied for music.

LIZS · 25/10/2019 18:37

Very strong music department, if she sings Chapel Choir is well regarded.

thewomanontheshore · 25/10/2019 18:42

Pity about the rent prices, but otherwise should suit her. Thanks.

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 25/10/2019 19:35

Can I ask for advice on applicant/offer holder days please?

DS has an invite to one next month, which feels slightly premature (only had one offer so far). I’ve suggested he ring the admissions office on Monday to ask if there will be another opportunity later in the process, but we are unsure what the benefits of attending are.

MillicentMartha · 25/10/2019 19:38

My DS went to two, to decide which to put as insurance. They weren’t compulsory.
