sandy London to Durham is just less than 3hrs by direct train. The East Coast line I know well and it’s not bad at all.
By the time you’ve faffed around at airports then travelled from Newcastle, I expect train is easier and cheaper.

KingscoteStaff · 28/11/2019 23:43

That’s great, sandy. DS is desperate to hear from Durham.

Thanks @ZandathePanda - I think you're right about the train. I always take the train from London to Edinburgh on the basis that there's no faffing around and you can get work done / watch stuff / snooze and arrive in the City centre. Much more energy efficient as well.

DS1 is not one for excitement but he is still genuinely buzzing this morning about his Durham offer.

Hoghgyni · 29/11/2019 20:50

sandy If DD ends up taking her place at Durham, she will have a nasty surprise. We usually get to Edinburgh & York using Advance First tickets from Kings Cross, with free food & wine thrown in. Standard class cross country will be much cheaper, but a shock to the system.

suze28 · 29/11/2019 21:58

Long time lurker here. DD1 has applied for Geography at Leicester, Loughborough, Keele, Worcester and Gloucestershire. Her application went on Wednesday and she received an unconditional from Gloucestershire that afternoon plus an offer from Leicester of ABB or BBB if her firm today.

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 30/11/2019 01:28

DS received his second offer from Royal Holloway London today and also an invite to an offer holder day at York came in the post.

He isn't expecting to hear from Warwick until January (he applied for two courses there). Nothing from Lancaster yet but his isn't too worried as none of his friends who have also applied there have had any response from them yet.

MillicentMartha · 30/11/2019 14:15

Lovely to hear of offers coming through.

Just spent some time with my DS1 who is out the other side and in his first graduate job. The time whizzes by; I hope DS3 and all DC on this thread makes the most of their time as students. It should be fun as well as hard work.

I’m obviously feeling a bit philosophical! DS1 is luckily loving his job but feeling the lack of down time.

Very true. I could have done with a foundation year prepping me for uni - don't know when they introduced those but they seem like such a good idea. Just very expensive though. Now need to research student finance....

MillicentMartha · 30/11/2019 17:55

tudor it’s the students with parents in the ‘squeezed middle’ who come out worst. My DSes got/will get the full maintenance loans but for those who don’t their parents are expected to top up the minimum loan to the full amount at least. All get fees loans. So min loan is around £4000, max loan is under £9000. So parents expected to top up by up to £5000/year. For some that’s less than school fees were, for others it’s a bit pricey, for many it’s not affordable depending on their other commitments. Some students get no help and have to take on part time jobs. Very hard to do if doing a high contact time degree.

Even the full loan amount isn’t enough to live in the posher accommodation. My DSes have had to check accommodation and transport pricing very carefully when choosing unis for UCAS. But it’s doable if your DC is canny with money and takes summer jobs. My DS1 has been very careful and is enjoying his first proper pay cheques!

It’s not all bad, Hugo. It’s made shortlisting universities easier in some ways. Grin Birmingham is cheap... Grin Grin

No news from DD's applications as yet ...not expecting anything other than standard offers would be nice to hear back before mocks start in January.

Just two weeks left of this term :-)

MillicentMartha · 01/12/2019 13:28

oneteen, looking back at this thread DS’s first offer took 10 days and his 4th 20 days. He has one interview next week for the last one. That’s for maths and they were all standard offers. They may not have even read his PS! Well, Birmingham did because they referenced stuff in it in their offer holder day invitation. Smile So for other subjects it may take longer if they look at other information beyond predicted grades.

just dipping my toe into this post

dd has applied for Lancaster, Glasgow, Newcastle, Cumbria and Sunderland as insurance for Psychology...only heard back from Glasgow with a conditional AAA which in all honesty she isn't going to get.

I see her going through clearance as she really wants Lancaster as she did a summer school there

oneteen · 01/12/2019 15:39

@Gatekeeper - Lancaster looks lovely - crossed fingers that your DD gets an achievable offer.

Thanks, @MillicentMartha - Bham has stated they will reply within 15 days so that may well be her first response...

When are everyone's mocks? DD's are in January.

MillicentMartha · 01/12/2019 16:30

DS’s are the first week back after Christmas which seems jolly mean and unseasonal!

suze28 · 01/12/2019 16:44

End of January for DD; fortunately they're finished just before her 18th birthday!

Also first week after half term.

aibutohavethisusername · 01/12/2019 17:20

Some time in February.

sandybayley · 01/12/2019 17:22

@MillicentMartha - DS1 also has mocks the 1st week of January.

We have parents' evening in the 3rd week of January to discuss the results - I think that will be the last one 🙁

oneteen · 01/12/2019 17:29

DD's off the mark first offer from Bham - not sure whether she applied for the Masters at Bham or not but looks to be standard offer AAB...its probably her 4th favorite at the moment but in fairness, she has not looked around the campus etc so we will go to offer day.

I'm sure DD's mocks are on return to school give or take a day or two.

I'm quite excited - I'm going to be doing the peak exit poll for Mori on the 12th...very marginal seat (under 1000 votes). Just hope its NOT too cold - anyone's DC voting?

MissConductUS · 01/12/2019 17:34

DD applied early action to Clark University in Wooster Mass. and has already been accepted with a very nice merit scholarship. She's pleased, but it's her safety school and won't hear back from the rest until next March. She finished her other eight applications last week, so all done with that finally. She can relax a bit now.
