It depends on subject. DS has an AAA offer from Brum for maths. They don’t really do low offers for maths.

MillicentMartha I know what you mean about the lower offers, they are a clever marketing tool, but it really does seem to take the pressure off. DS's top 3 were Exeter, Warwick and Nottingham - the courses for Law are all fairly similar and he would be delighted to go to any of them. The other two have now also offered, but AAA. A third A is a stretch for my son so I think the reduced offer will tip the balance. Insurance offer likely to be higher than firm!

MillicentMartha · 26/11/2019 22:16

If he’s equally happy with all 3 that does make it easier tudorbuff.

Unfortunately DS is equally happy with his top 4, all of which have given him an AAA offer or equivalent. He’s not so keen on his AAB offer uni! Typical. We found it hard to find a uni offering ABB that wasn’t in clearing at a much lower offer last year. I think DS will use clearing as his insurance.

DS recieved his first offer from York (4 days after submission) so is thrilled and has now stopped checking his emails every 20 mins. It isnt his top choice but the offer has got rid of his anxiety of being the only person in his friendship group with no offers after the delays with his application.

tudorbuff · 27/11/2019 09:03

Great news! Such a relief to get the first one.

oneteen · 27/11/2019 09:53

Well done @SunburstsOrMarbleHalls DS.

DD had acknowledgments this morning. I'm just sitting back now because she may have to wait a little while for decisions.

mimbleandlittlemy · 27/11/2019 10:04

kingscote - ds waiting on offer holder day for Newcastle too - they've offered him BBB if he takes it as his Firm and it was one of his top three so definitely back for another look but no news as to when they are.

Interview for Manchester isn't until 29th Jan so nothing happening in this household until he has had that. Only one still not heard from beyond acknowledgement is Warwick.

mimbleandlittlemy · 27/11/2019 10:06

oneteen - glad you are finally up and running. Hope offers start to come through pretty quick.

thesunwillout · 27/11/2019 10:35

@oneteen, that was quick!
Hoping DD gets some today

Katisha · 27/11/2019 12:17

DS has a Birmingham attainment offer of CCC for biomed. He's now been called for interview at Manchester. I'm confused now as to whether firming the Birmingham offer to get the CCC means you effectively stop looking at anywhere else?

oneteen · 27/11/2019 12:21

@Katisha You don't have to firm until May, so your DS can still carry on looking at all his options...

ZandathePanda · 27/11/2019 12:34

Hello - Clicked on this thread and was instantly transported back to last year when Dd was doing all this. I noticed a few of you are mentioning Newcastle University. Dd was adamant that was where she was going - to the point that I told her to put one more down so at least she had 2 on her UCAS form. She got in and loves it. Everyone seems to. The only negative seems to be a few people didn’t like their first year accommodation allocation (Castle Leazes) which is like marmite.

It’s funny because at this point pupils are so obsessed with grades but when they get to university no one talks about it. I asked her the other day and she said one of her flatmates brought it up the night before and all except one (who got in on a different course) got higher than their offers. I can’t read anything into that but thought it maybe useful?

Also I notice people are getting the same grade offers from different universities and don’t know how to choose (if they like the courses the same). Dds insurance was the same grades although she had to get an A in a stipulated subject. It was always going to be the insurance though so that was arbitrary.

I know this sounds a bit daft but look at the accommodation policies for firm/insurance too. My Dd was very keen on particular accommodation and it was another sigh of relief knowing she got it. Some universities allocate the ‘firms’ preferences before insurances. Don’t ask me about Newcastle’s - I can’t remember! I know that a couple of Dds past school friends at different universities have felt miserable in part down to initial accommodation. I kept telling Dd if this happened, there’s always a lot of movement with students dropping out/courses finishing at different times but it’s a factor worth considering if nothing else.

Good Luck everyone.

MillicentMartha · 27/11/2019 13:22

Katisha as oneteen said, but also you can't firm any uni until you have received all your offers, (unless you decide to withdraw from those you are still waiting for.) There's no benefit to firming this early.

Hi Zanda. Thanks for your input. My DS1 had a similar issue when he realised he might not get decent accommodation at his insurance uni. Luckily he amazed himself and actually exceeded his offer for his aspirational firm and got his first choice accommodation.

Thanks to posters above for replying However he says he wants to firm the Birmingham CCC offer so probably its a bit of a waste of Manchester's time to go for their interview now? Basically feels like the Birmingham attainment offer takes everything else off the table?

MillicentMartha · 27/11/2019 18:40

If that’s how he feels. I’d still go to Manchester for the experience, personally, and he might find he really likes it there. Or he could contact them and tell them he no longer wants to attend. They may send him an offer anyway or reject him which will speed up the process of firming Brum.

LIZS · 27/11/2019 20:24

Dd just found an email from Southampton dated last week in her spam, inviting her to applicant day and interview in the New Year.

Snozzlemaid · 27/11/2019 20:25

He's a strong candidate then Serin. Maybe they're not doing lower the CCC offers for his subject.
It was a Biomed talk where we heard about it. So don't know about other subjects.

I remember that maths wasn’t on their u/c list. I’d guess CS might be the same?

OP posts:
Ironoaks · 27/11/2019 21:59

I asked DS whether he had heard from Southampton yet. He said he received an invitation to an applicant day with an optional informal interview. He has declined, giving the reason that he has already attended an open day there and already has all the information he needs.

LIZS · 27/11/2019 22:03

@Ironoaks dd seems to think attendance is obligatory if she is to get an offer. May not be true for all subjects but website for hers this year implied no interview but there it is. Attended open day last year too.

MarchingFrogs · 27/11/2019 22:48

Back in 2015, DS1 had an unconditional if firmed offer for Biochemistry at Birmingham (which he eventually accepted), but a friend applying for Computer Science with equally good predicted grades did not. Certainly, not all departments participate(d).

Ironoaks · 27/11/2019 22:51

LIZS
The email asked "Would you like to come to an applicant day?" and "Would you like an interview?" with an explanation that attending an interview might result in a lower offer if firmed.

There was a link to register for one of several dates. The online form included the option to not attend any. When DS chose this option, the next question asked why, and there was an option for "I attended an open day and received all the information I need."

If being given an offer is dependent on attending the applicant day / interview, then the email is very misleading.
