Dd has an unconditional offer from York (again!) so at least that is one she knows she is happy with, if less certainty of a year abroad.

MillicentMartha · 19/11/2019 18:13

A levels do finish mid June. Hmm Teachers don’t finish til 3/4 through July. Getting suitably qualified and competent markers of A level exams that aren’t teachers isn’t that easy.

And well done LIZ’s DD. Cross fingers for more offers on their way.

Dd's applications have finally been submitted by her college.
I'm going to have to bite my tongue to stop asking her constantly if she's heard anything yet.

Grufallosfriends · 19/11/2019 18:44

But genuine question: how do all other countries manage? Do they just employ more markers?

Grufallosfriends · 19/11/2019 18:45

And well done to all the offers so far!

MillicentMartha · 19/11/2019 18:49

Some European countries have much longer holidays, so the teachers are available.

snozzlemaid I aimed for asking once every 2 days! Grin

Yes, and don’t think having even longer school holidays will go down well in the UK!

That's great news Snozzle ...I'm turning off from even asking DD about her application status hopefully when it eventually goes she will let me know. Interesting one of her friends has received two UC's fro Classics (one if firmed - the other just a flat UC).

Alaimo · 20/11/2019 04:12

I went to school in another European country: exams are in May, results announced mid-June. All other age groups are still in school at that point, so teachers have to mark exam scripts alongside their normal teaching duties. Plus most kids will sit at least 6 exams, so if anything there are even more exam scripts to be marked.

Grufallosfriends · 20/11/2019 08:08

Exactly Alaimo.

In Germany kids take more subject exams for their Abitur in May and all the exams are all marked well in time for the July 15th deadline for Uni applications. So it is possible.

Summer holidays are only 6 weeks btw, staggered slightly by state.

Grufallosfriends · 20/11/2019 08:11

Some European countries have much longer holidays, so the teachers are available.

Exam papers are not marked during holidays.

MillicentMartha · 20/11/2019 09:51

Maybe they pay better, @Grufallosfriends, so have more examiners?

First offer in for dd from Reading for Biomed. It was her safety choice with lower grade requirements than her other choices. Standard offer was BBB, she's had an offer of BBD providing she gets a B in Biology.

oneteen · 20/11/2019 19:22

Well done Snozzles DD...

I hope I'm not speaking too soon but DD has a meeting booked in for tomorrow (apparently they do the meetings in batches which I suppose makes sense). I think her application may finally go tomorrow!

snozzlemaid · 20/11/2019 19:26

Oh I really hope that means it'll be sent off soon oneteen
Fingers crossed for you.

MillicentMartha · 20/11/2019 19:39

Such a saga, oneteen!

snozzlemaid nice to have a great insurance in the bag. I think we might have been on a thread together with older DC? My DS1 did GCSEs in 2014, does that sound right?

OP posts:
snozzlemaid · 20/11/2019 20:46

Wow millicent, what a memory! My ds would have taken GCSEs that year.
I can't even remember posting then.
I've had a completely different experience with dd compared to ds. He didn't go to university and didn't really care about GCSEs or know what he wanted to do whereas dd is a hard worker who's very focused on what she wants to do.
So this is my first experience of uni applications.

blackistheneworange · 20/11/2019 21:15

My DS sent his UCAS form off (via school) on Tuesday and less than 24hours later received an unconditional offer for his preferred uni (Staffs) and course. To say I'm in a state of shock is an understatement- I didn't even think he'd get into 6th form after GCSEs as he had totally switched off from school, naming it "a failing institution " HmmConfusedI suggested work was much more of a failing institution Grin

MillicentMartha · 20/11/2019 21:47

snozzlemaid my middle DS is my different one!

Wow, black! Is he tempted by the unconditional? Can he use it as an insurance or is it u/c only if firm?

OP posts:
MillicentMartha · 20/11/2019 21:48

Teach me to read more carefully! It’s his preferred uni! That’s fantastic!

First offer for DD - Edinburgh unconditional. Just over a week from submitting. Likely to be her first or second choice.

Anyone know why graduate prospects are lower for Edinburgh in some courses compared to similar Scottish universities?

tudorbuff · 21/11/2019 08:58

Hope it's ok for me to join, have been watching this with interest. My son submitted his form on Monday for law, and got his first offer yesterday - AAB from Cardiff. Likely to be his fifth choice, so hate to think how high any other offers might be! Hopefully it will concentrate his mind on how hard he needs to work to get these grades!
