@mimbleandlittlemy Thatcher?!!! There hasn't been enough time elapsed to assess the impact of her time in office to be able to study it effectively, especially not by 17yr olds! Who sets these crazy coursework topics 25yr old history phd students probably Grin

I studied the Vietnam War at O level, less than 10 years after the end of it!

I know one board covers the 1997 election but I've not heard of anything more recent.

DS1's coursework is on 19th century China - it's OCR. It's due in this week and he's finished it but says he is still 'polishing'.

TerfinUSA99 · 05/11/2019 09:47

We were told at school that we couldn't learn about WW2 because the 50 years hadn't elapsed so everything was "secret". Sounds like a cop out to me!

We did a chunk on American history 1773-85 for which I am eternally grateful as it has helped me understand the points of view of some of my odd friends who live across the pond Grin My mum complained that we'd done Americans but didn't study the Chartists!

ofteninaspin · 05/11/2019 10:02

Well done to all your DC on offers and interviews.

Not much happening here but DS isn't expecting to hear from his remaining choices until after the January deadline.

Thanks to Millicent re TrainPal and the 16-17 railcard. Don't know how I missed the latter; how new is it?

oneofthegiantsisme · 05/11/2019 10:08

Well done to all DC receiving offers!

We're slowly making progress here - DS asked one of his teachers to look at his PS over half term - which I guess means he's actually written it (it was news to me!).

I've told him we're happy to help with any of the application if asked, but if he feels he's got it under control, then we're leaving him to it.

That's until he needs transport to interviews, of course... (he's been told that his course interviews for at least two of his choices).

MillicentMartha · 05/11/2019 11:25

The railcard is very new! Started in September this year.

Dd very surprised and pleased to get an offer from Aberdeen today - at the advertised grades. We weren't expecting to hear from them until January at least.

So that's 4 offers now - just her top choice of Edinburgh to hear from now and they should be after January.

DD's A level History covers British history from sometime post-war (1950s or 60s) to 2007... (AQA?). She doesn't like it much - too much politics. But very useful for her to know.

MillicentMartha · 05/11/2019 20:20

First offer has arrived! From Cardiff, standard offer and no qualification about firm/insurance. It might end up being DS’s insurance if I can persuade him that being a student in Cardiff is ace. I think he’d prefer more of a campus uni, though.

I did ‘Modern World History’ at O level and I was really happy to learn about events my parents had lived through and knew as general knowledge/current affairs. Your DD’s A level sounds perfect to me, ThingDoer. Good news re Aberdeen!

MillicentMartha, good news for your son.
Cardiff is dd's first choice, not seen it crop up on here before.
She's yet to send off her application.

HesMyLobster · 05/11/2019 23:26

DD received her 5th offer today! ABB from Liverpool, so that will be a comfortable insurance.
Now to decide between the top 2 for firm choice.
Looks like some of Leeds offer holder day choices are in February half term so we're planning a little trip for a couple of nights to explore the city as well as the Uni.
Birmingham is closer and we know the city pretty well so will do day trips there.
I can't wait as didn't get to go to any open days with her. Smile

MillicentMartha · 06/11/2019 06:45

Remind me which subject, Lobster? Is it maths?

Well done to everyone with offers and interviews...

@HesMyLobster My Niece is due to complete all final year of a 4 yr course at Leeds come Sept 2020...she's loved being in Leeds. The Yorkshire Soap company is worth a visit if you are looking around the city.

Still waiting for DD's application to go off...Form Tutor was chasing for her PS yesterday when it was already completed and on UCAS form...so it looks like they are processing applications.

mimbleandlittlemy · 06/11/2019 12:30

Offer in from Newcastle this morning. Standard course offer, or BBB if he puts it as his Firm. DS loved Newcastle and it's very good for his course but he is holding out to see if Manchester come through with an interview. At least he now has a Firm in Newcastle and an Insurance in Cardiff if no one else offers him though.

Friend's daughter has interview date for Manchester, another friend's daughter has offer from Exeter all in the last two or three days. Unis definitely all seem to be pretty active at the moment!

Xenia · 06/11/2019 12:52

In my A level history in 1979 I remember liking the bits that got close to the current day. The latest we did was Khrushchev who was after Stalin so getting quite current for 1979.

HesMyLobster · 06/11/2019 18:07

@MillicentMartha DD has applied for psychology.
Thankyou for the Leeds tip @oneteen. Would love to hear more if anyone knows the city. Planning to go for 3 nights in feb half term - just about to book a hotel.
DD is fairly sure it's her favourite based on course- we just need to explore a little bit.

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 06/11/2019 18:07

@HesMyLobster DS is going to a Leeds offer holders day next month. DH is going along for the ride, they’re staying overnight to have a good look around. I went on the open day and loved the city centre.

MillicentMartha · 06/11/2019 19:23

I need a spreadsheet, Lobster! Grin

Second offer in, AAA or A*AB from Nottingham. All happy here.

DS did the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge today. It went OK apparently. Going on last year he won’t get his results for ages!

OP posts:
Ironoaks · 08/11/2019 19:35

MillicentMartha DS also did the SMC yesterday. I can't remember how long the results take to come back. The BMO1 is at the end of November, so presumably it must be before that.

MillicentMartha · 08/11/2019 20:23

DS didn’t get his results until after the kangaroo last year, just that he had qualified for it! He’s doing the team challenge as well this year.

Well done to your DS on his Notts offer @MillicentMartha.

DD's application has not yet gone ...she is just checking it over again this weekend before the button finally gets pressed - should be Monday.

The initial application will probably go off with 3 maybe 4 options - does anyone know how you add the additional choices after submission and what the cut-off date is for adding either 4th or 5th choice...I know she needs to do this before turning down/firming offers.

MillicentMartha · 09/11/2019 18:51

I think it’s 15th Jan, oneteen but worth checking. Once she gets the log in for Track it should be obvious how to add one. It took school about a week to check over DS’s form and add their reference, then he got an email from UCAS with log in details. DS used his home email address as his contact email rather than school, so he can monitor it from home or school.
