Previous thread - sorry about the lame thread title but done in a hurry!

Renesting sounds an excellent idea @bigTillyMint!

I think matriculation is a pukka universities thing - Oxbridge students matriculate too and I daresay some of the older Scottish universities do so.

No room swapping here either😏feel a bit left out.
I did spring clean ds’s room thought, you’ll never believe the treasures I found! White shirts for formals which he said he couldn’t find, stashed in a wrinkled pile at the back of his wardrobe, new clothes never worn labels still intact, I moved those to ds2’s room,he’ll love them.
My missing screwdriver set (goodness knows what he was using it for, but claimed he’d never seen it) piles of scribbled artwork all screwed up and chucked behind desk (DS was an art scholar and has some brilliant art pieces but lost interest after GCSE). These I straightened out and put in a folder. All his school sports kit (worth a few hundred!) again in a manky wrinkled pile in a bag stuffed behind his bed. Phew!

On the upside, he reports lectures are going fine and seemed pleased they went over stuff he had done in his A’Levels so feeling confident about his place.

MrKlaw · 02/10/2019 09:29

we've not touched DS' room. He'll be back at Christmas/easter and we haven't talked about letting DD have the room - she is in a much smaller room so it may be worth a conversation, but then she's only a few years out from heading off too

Ingles2 · 02/10/2019 09:32

morning! gorgeous morning on the south coast, and looks like a gorgeous day in Durham too... ds2 also has a gowned matriculation, he sent me a message in the middle of night, saying he couldn't get his new clothes steamer to work, god knows why he was doing it then, but vaguely sensible I guess :D have messaged him asking to see a pic ... think its very unlikely, but fingers crossed .. will they do the entire fresher cohort in the cathedral at one time do you think?

Ingles2 · 02/10/2019 09:34

OMg @bigTillyMint you lucky thing!
Grin

Alicatz66 · 02/10/2019 09:36

Ahaha !!! I've just googled matriculation too !! ... thought I was the only one who didn't know what it was !!!

Ingles2 · 02/10/2019 09:40

At Durham, its a service in the cathedral where they sign the register and become a formal member of the uni,.. then they go back to their college and do the same thing.. some are gowned, some or not, makes no difference... I think its a bit of pomp and ceremony, excuse for another party Grin

Herocomplex · 02/10/2019 09:52

And a formal photo Ingles2 which is huge for Collingwood!

FrameyMcFrame · 02/10/2019 10:43

I only know what it is because my brothers went to Oxford. I have a copy of DB's matriculation photo because he's standing next to Ian Hislop...who happened to be in his year at the same college. Don't think he ever spoke to him though!

bigTillyMint · 02/10/2019 10:55

Ingles2 the photo he sent is mostly bright sunlight, another student and half his face/body Grin I am going for an official one!

bigTillyMint · 02/10/2019 10:55

Hoping not going!

Tinseltrauma · 02/10/2019 10:58

Re-nesting - perfect word! It's going on here too. We are empty nesters now but I have to say I am loving the reorganisation and the decluttering. What's even nicer is that it is staying that way for the first time in years!

DS is also matriculating today (Durham, Hatfield). We've had a few WhatsApp's from him, he says he's met loads of really nice people and the college as a whole is so welcoming. Loving the formal stuff which I was a bit unsure about, though the novelty may wear off I think. He has a lovely room, en-suite, sharing with two others. We took a bit of a gamble choosing a shared room but so far it seems to have paid off. We were only expecting one roommate so it was a surprise to find it was two but the room is fab, recently refurbished, great location in the college. He says the food is good which is a relief as he is fully catered!
It's lovely to hear how everyone is settling in and starting their journeys into the next chapter of their lives. Thoughts go out to those who are not so happy at the moment. My older DD struggled to settle at uni, those feelings of helplessness as a parent are awful. She did settle in the end though, and though she would never say her uni years were the best of her life, she did come out with a good degree and a decent career path, so not all in vain. In reality is a relatively short period in their lives though it might not seem so now.

Tinseltrauma · 02/10/2019 11:00

We forgot to fill in the form for the matriculation photo - hoping he gets a chance to order one today!

bigTillyMint · 02/10/2019 11:03

Tinseltrauma, there was a form?Shock

Ingles2 · 02/10/2019 11:17

we didn't order one either... wish I had! otherwise I'll probably never get to see .. ds2 does not do photo's

Ginfordinner · 02/10/2019 12:11

“:googles 'matriculation':”

So did I MrKlaw

I had a massive spring clean and declutter last weekend. DD’s room is spotless and tidy! You can now see the floor in the spare back bedroom now that all the university stuff has gone.

Is anyone on the WIWIKAU Facebook page? There is a heart-breaking story about a young man who messed up his A levels, too a year out to do a Princes Trust course, applied successfully to Sheffield Hallam University only to find on enrolling that the university had mistaken a GCSE certificate for an A level certificate, and he should never have been given an offer. This happened after student finance and accommodation had been sorted. Oh, and the offer was unconditional. I feel so sorry for the young man and his parents, and am outraged at the way they have been treated.

Tinseltrauma · 02/10/2019 12:23

@bigTillyMint @Ingles2 Apparently there was a form in the envelope of bumph that arrived from the college soon after results day. I was reminded of this in one of the WhatsApp's he sent yesterday! £15 it was, I think. Unless he manages to sort it today I suspect I won't get to see matriculation either - the photos sent by him so far have not been the best in terms of quality or quantity!

Chillywhippet · 02/10/2019 12:50

Blimey Gin surely the uni owe that man a solution given it was their error? A foundation module in the missing A level or even a foundation year?

DD has to choose between 2 modules which are taught with the foundation year to catch up on content depending on A levels.

Ingles2 · 02/10/2019 13:01

@bigTillyMint @Tinseltrauma I've seen a pic!!!!! I cant quite believe it... had a little sob cos it was so fab .Haven't felt weepy at all sending them off, just excited at all the opportunities .. now could have a really good cry

bigTillyMint · 02/10/2019 13:05

Awww Ingles2 I'm feeling a bit strange today too Confused

justasking111 · 02/10/2019 13:15

Remember DS came home at the weekend really poorly. Well now I am oh joy!!!

bigTillyMint · 02/10/2019 13:52

Oh no!

Just got a toga picture 😂

ZandathePanda · 02/10/2019 14:16

Glad others had to google ‘matriculation’ too. I said, in another thread I think, that I actually did a postgrad at a university that matriculates and still didn’t know what it meant. I must have missed without realising it if postgrads have one too Grin.

Shimy · 02/10/2019 14:36

I'm actually surprised all universities in the U.K don't have a matriculation ceremony for new undergrads. Was it abolished a long time ago or was it just never a thing save for a few?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/10/2019 14:39

I'm pretty sure I matriculated but think it's been abolished by and large. I don't have an official photo though!
