She's ordered a 20s headband and that's it so far. I'm offering to fashion a toga from an old duvet cover as all my sheets are fitted. Grin

Benjispruce · 25/09/2019 10:04

Witchend Great that your DD knows her own mind. My DD suffers terribly from FOMO(fear of missing out) and fitting in bothers her. No gown at Collingwood so the outfit is more important as on show. I've asked her to try on a couple of dresses of mine(simple jersey Boden) but they remain hanging on the wardrobe door ( procrastination) and we will hover around the next 48 hours in the same way until all hell breaks loose on Friday night when she has to make a decision.

Witchend · 25/09/2019 10:10

Benjispruce
I think our dd's would get on well. I have a procrastinator too.

I'm offering to fashion a toga from an old duvet cover as all my sheets are fitted.
That reminds me of when dd was in year 3 and we got a letter from school telling us about "Roman day" in 2 days time. "Don't worry about getting a costume," it said. "Any one of you can make a simple toga from just any sheet at home."
I emailed in with the words "all our sheets are fitted" and didn't get a response. Grin

Benjispruce · 25/09/2019 10:13

Ha ha Witchend I had the same but luckily back then, I think it was year 3, she fitted in a pillowcase with a neck hole cut into one end and and old plaited belt of mine completed the look!

Benjispruce · 25/09/2019 10:15

DD has just read that tumble dyers are free at Collingwood! Drying clothes in rooms is not allowed due it contributing to damp issues! No need for the clothes horse then.

Benjispruce · 25/09/2019 10:15

dryers not dyers

Benjispruce · 25/09/2019 10:16

driers

Benjispruce · 25/09/2019 10:17

It is dryers isn't it? Durham have it wrong?!

Witchend · 25/09/2019 10:25

I thought dryers, but I suspect driers is probably considered to be a reasonable alternative now.
Having them free is fairly sensible to discourage drying in rooms. Ours were 20p per 10 minutes. But you could put as many 20ps in as you thought it needed, but once it was dry you didn't get them refunded, and most people just stuck a load in, meaning that every now and then you got it for free as there was enough stocked up from other people.

Dd had a Roman Mystery costume which I'd made for Book Day so she wore that.

@MarchingFrogs no ds looked online on Friday. It showed the amount he would get with payment dates. The first payment being Monday (which he hadn't received Monday but he's been non contact since) then a letter came in the post Monday with £3,000 less on it, just the minimum. Yes we had to send in a passport form to add his new passport number to the claim. But we sent the finance form with our income about 6 weeks ago. So it's not like they received the info late. I'm just waiting to see how much he gets given. If it's just minimum I don't know whether to try calling them or just let it go. Ds will have less to pay back if we give him the money. I'm a bit undecided on that one.

Ingles2 · 25/09/2019 10:37

ds2 is not a drinker either but he seems to quite like the idea of a fancy dress party.. we also have the Roman theme as well as the "through time" one... Dh surpassed himself by cutting a branch from one of our bay trees this morning and fashioning it into a laurel wreath, so that's a start! Grin
Matriculation at Hild Bede does have a gown and he needs a lounge suit as well as a dinner suit... but all this formal stuff is much easier for boys than girls for sure... I hate dress shopping, so sympathise @Benjispruce

ZandathePanda · 25/09/2019 10:40

Isn’t matriculation getting your documents together and heading off to campus to sign up for your modules and student union card?? Grin
I actually had to look it up - I never did the matriculation thing and I went to one of the universities on the list but for postgrad so perhaps they don’t do it for them or I accidentally missed it!?
Do parents go? I can imagine it is quite stressful looking for a dress/outfit trying to second guess how to fit in at this early stage. Good way of finding out who’s on your course though.

Dd is at Newcastle. She’ll never wear a mortar board and the only time she’ll wear the gown is at graduation. Newcastle and Durham used to be the same university (Newcastle was the medicine and science bit). I was told that when they split in the 60’s the rival faculties had a massive punch up at graduation (hats ended up in Tyne) and the university big wigs decided that Newcastle students should not wear mortar boards at graduation. Which carries on to this day. I think the official version doesn’t include the punch-up bit!

Trewser · 25/09/2019 10:46

looking at photos of durham matriculation any dress will do tbh.

If I had to wear a gown I wouldn't wear long, the proportions would be all wrong gavel

Benjispruce · 25/09/2019 10:46

Love the sound of that Zanda! DD chose a less formal college as she didn’t fancy formal gowned dinners but she would have liked a gowned matriculation so that she could be anonymous.

Benjispruce · 25/09/2019 10:48

Yes Trewser I’ve looked up images too. But it states flat shoes so that adds a dilemma for girls. DD has a lovely pair of smart DM brogues but that makes trousers seem a better choice to me.

Ingles2 · 25/09/2019 10:57

I'd go for some sort of suit @Benjispruce either trousers or skirt with her brogues... does she have either of those?

Benjispruce · 25/09/2019 10:58

Nope

MrKlaw · 25/09/2019 10:58

Bath SU page seems to have removed the sports clubs, and societies says from their events pages - anyone know if that’s because of weather or something else? Tried searching around but can’t see anything

Ingles2 · 25/09/2019 11:02

did she interview for oxbridge/ anywhere? if so, what did she wear then?

Benjispruce · 25/09/2019 11:15

Yes she did have an interview at Oxford but they were told to be casual.

Trewser · 25/09/2019 11:17

you can wear DM flats with dresses! Very cool.

Trewser · 25/09/2019 11:18

I can't believe they are going to care what students wear as long as its not jeans!

Benjispruce · 25/09/2019 11:19

She has a smart mid length coat and i think a simple dress with opaques underneath with her brogues would look ok.

Benjispruce · 25/09/2019 11:20

It's not that uni care it's what a stressed. self conscious DD will wear!!

Trewser · 25/09/2019 11:27

She has a smart mid length coat and i think a simple dress with opaques underneath with her brogues would look ok sounds perfect!
