Previous thread. Possibly a little precipitous but for some of our DC their university start date is only just over a fortnight away. Yikes!

Just realised my post was on the wrong thread was meant to be on the Scotsnet heading to uni thread, hence the mention of specific Scottish unis!

Piggywaspushed · 31/08/2019 10:42

I am hoping one of DS's flatmates brings an Xbox. That's good for bonding , I suspect. He can't take ours,as it isn't his!

Piggywaspushed · 31/08/2019 10:43

wiggly you're more than welcome though! Smile

I am Glaswegian so like to nose round Scottish threads sometimes!

Piggywaspushed · 31/08/2019 10:46

It'd be a big change from school if most kids take laptops to lectures (although I am sure they do). Most schools still have very much the pen and paper approach!

DS has a laptop (the one he keeps breaking was replaced)mainly because he had exam concessions but he mainly uses it for Football Manager and for damaging

Mustbetimeforachange · 31/08/2019 10:53

Certainly when DS1 went 2 years ago there were plenty of screens & x boxes arriving. I was horrified at the thought of them hiding in their rooms playing games. Guess what he took in 2nd year?

Ligresa · 31/08/2019 10:56

I must say I am glad dd has taken an extra year before uni. She grew up a lot in that year. I think she is worried that her flatmates will be very immature. Hopefully she'll meet some more mature first years.

Ligresa · 31/08/2019 10:57

She doesn't game either. This thread is making me nervous Confused

Piggywaspushed · 31/08/2019 10:58

Oh my DS doesn't game! Just nerdy football manage things and Fifa on the Xbox. He has a cricket game as well and that's it.

Witchend · 31/08/2019 11:00

Ligresa · 31/08/2019 11:13

Not good for bonding if you have no interest in xboxes! I think dd is hoping the kitchen will be where the friendship happens. She's planning to join a couple of sports socs so that will help

Piggywaspushed · 31/08/2019 11:17

DS's flat has a living room with a TV so I reckon someone will bring an Xbox. The kitchen is separate. Where DS will spend much time making coffee and leaving his spoon in the sink to annoy everyone.

I have no interest in X Boxes either. Used to like Wii Sports . Bit sad that the Wii seems to have died out!

Witchend · 31/08/2019 11:24

Piggy you can introduce the idea of soaking stubborn stains to get it off to your ds, it sounds like he'd like it.

I showed my (male) flatmates how to leave something to soak after one of them had burnt something on a pan. They were delighted. They were even more delighted at the idea they could legitimately put off the washing up. One day I came into the kitchen to find a dozen mugs all carefully put to "soak". Grin

icanbewhatiwant · 31/08/2019 11:37

That's a downside to my ds's accommodation. It has a very small kitchen for 12 and that is the communal area in their flat. So I'm not sure there will be room for those that game. He does like gaming but not obsessed with it like his younger brother.

Shimy · 31/08/2019 11:38

Wicthend That is hilarious! Grin

MrKlaw · 31/08/2019 11:43

If everyone hogs the TVs playing fifa that’s not ideal, but there are lots of ‘couch co-op’ games that are great even with those that don’t play much

Piggywaspushed · 31/08/2019 11:47

witchend , I have just had flashbacks of things being left to soak Grin

My DH still tells me off if I wash his tea mug because he hasn't used it the required number of times.

GoldenRuby · 31/08/2019 11:51

My DS isnt a gamer, but we've just got back from a week's holiday in the U.K. and there was a Wii in the cottage, so he did enjoy some Mario Kart and Wii Golf while we were there. We've had a productive morning - his student bank account details have arrived so have registered for online banking, sent off for the free railcard, and updated Student Finance. We are paying his accommodation and he will live off the maintenance loan. Works out at just over £100 a week which is more than enough, but he will need to buy sports kit/pay sports club subs out of that as well.

Ligresa · 31/08/2019 12:14

Well dd will be watching Netflix in her room if the communal tv is hogged by gamers! Good life skills learnt if they can all work out a tv rota!

RedHelenB · 31/08/2019 12:34

Tbh only 1 if dds flatmates spent any time in the communal area. She visited other flats. It really is pot luck.

Dd2 had a cheerful envelope arrive with all the student union stuff and freshers events on. Her first week will be filled nicely I think with a mix of activities.

Benjispruce · 31/08/2019 12:51

DD filling out her Dr registration at last and needed her immunisation dates. Really pleased with myself that I had actually written in the dates of the ones she had at school in her little red book. Retrospective smugness Wink

TonTonMacoute · 31/08/2019 13:27

For what it's worth, DS (about to start second year) is an avid gamer at home, but has absolutely no interest in doing it at uni.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 31/08/2019 13:40

DS was thinking of taking his PS4 and monitor but not sure we will be able to carry them. It might just revolutionise his life not being able to game on whim!

OP posts:
MrKlaw · 31/08/2019 13:55

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 could try taking just PS4 and play on iPad/laptop using remote play? Saves the bulk of a monitor

justasking111 · 31/08/2019 14:07

DS went cold turkey on gaming last few months of A levels, it meant he lost track of what, where and who. He has not been on it at all this summer. Has enjoyed netflix and amazon prime though.

bigTillyMint · 31/08/2019 14:31

@Benjispruce, must get DS to do that and get a list of his imunisations...

He is not a gamer - prefers RL sport, but will join in occasionally if his mates are playing FifaGrin
