Eight books, not right...

juicy0 · 18/08/2019 22:06

Thank you @JennyWreny that's useful info

ZandathePanda · 18/08/2019 22:34

Dd getting a big loan so we’ll be opening a savings account hopefully alongside a student account. Don’t want an account with a debit card having too much money in it invade the debit card gets lost/stolen.

ZandathePanda · 18/08/2019 22:35

Incase changes to invade on my phone Grin

Danglingmod · 18/08/2019 22:49

Because it's two words, Zanda Grin.

Yes, have advised ds to move most of his loan to savings and only move small amounts across, too.

ZandathePanda · 18/08/2019 23:01

Oh dear nearly half a century of incases. In deed Wink my daughter didn’t get her brains from me.

Off to find a doorstop....door stop....a stop to stop a door.

Too much Wine.

Danglingmod · 18/08/2019 23:03

A wedge? Grin

FrameyMcFrame · 18/08/2019 23:58

We discovered this today....

It'll apply to anyone whose dc is not now going to the first choice uni or has a place through clearing.

Dd had to download, print and send off the change of circumstances form on student finance website to tell them you're going to a different institution.
It will take 20 working days to update so needs to be done ASAP

AtiaoftheJulii · 19/08/2019 00:01

An award winning doorstop! That takes the Biscuit Grin

I remember reading a couple of messages on Thursday that seemed to say that you could tell from the results summary that special consideration had been applied?.is this the case or was I misunderstanding things?

FrameyMcFrame · 19/08/2019 00:03

@ZandathePanda

Why a doorstop?

LillianGish · 19/08/2019 00:28

DC1 has now had her accommodation offer for Cardiff. Not the ones she wanted but she dithered for so long, she presumably was one of the later applications. My DD too - she's now totally stressing over this. She has self-catered en-suite, but not in the block she wanted. She doesn't really know what any of the blocks are like, but is now tying herself in knots reading loads of ancient on-line reviews.

TootingLate · 19/08/2019 00:38

@LillianGish. As my son pointed out today, people leave very polarised views.

TootingLate · 19/08/2019 00:41

@ZandathePanda. I had already ordered a pack of two wedges and have now ordered a 6 pack of yours (having resisted the furry pug doorstop). DC's flat is catered for!

CointreauVersial · 19/08/2019 00:52

Framey - we just did the update on the student finance website, changing the uni from Warwick to UEA, and clicking "submit". It didn't ask us to download any forms.

Piggywaspushed · 19/08/2019 06:39

atia, special consideration shows as an & sign on my results spreadsheet as a teacher. I don't know whether this would be on individual student results slips, but if there is an &, that's what that means.

PhannyMcNee · 19/08/2019 06:51

@LillianGish - dc1 is in a house on Colum Road. A google seems to suggest it’s a 1 bed flat which has thrown me into a tizzy! I really don’t think that’s a good idea for a recently turned 18yo from a large family who is outgoing and sociable. She’s accepted it but I’m going to get her to contact the uni and double check she’s in a shared house today!

MrKlaw · 19/08/2019 06:53

How many of you also have access to track? It’d be good to have some visibility to check things are updating as expected - and DS isn’t always the most communicative

This week we need to confirm his clearing offer is updated in track; arrange accommodation on Wednesday (not clear if they just tell us or if we have to apply); update student finance with new uni; and start thinking about student bank account (he’s not 18 until Saturday)

And of course shopping this weekend..

milesandmilesandmileandmiles · 19/08/2019 07:24

The doorstop is for the students to prop open their doors as a more sociable gesture during Freshers week. Often a box of chocolates in the room helps break the ice too. DS got one from Amazon for about 69p, Dd has got quite a quirky cactus one from Home Bargains.

DS didn't start until pretty much October and I'm pretty certain his first instalment of his loan didn't get paid until after he registered. It says on the finance website though.

FrameyMcFrame · 19/08/2019 07:33

@CointreauVersial Oh, I wonder why it made us print and sign a form? Unless I've got it wrong.
I'll go back on and look

@ZandathePanda I see, amazing idea, I'll be buying a pack too!

LillianGish · 19/08/2019 07:35

PhannyMcphee - I'm fairly sure that's a house. We walked past a couple of houses on Collum Road when we were looking round (though weren't able to go in) - they are very close to the the university buildings. My DD is in Talybont North - she would have preferred Talybont Court, but to be honest I think they will all be much of a muchness and in the end it will come down to who else is living in the flat and round and about. I think in my DD's case she is (entirely understandably and in common with many 18-year-olds) slightly anxious about leaving home and living away (in another country in her case) at university and so stressing over where she will be living is one of the ways this is manifesting itself.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/08/2019 07:51

@FrameyMcFrame I stood over DS when he updated SFE on Saturday. I don't recall that there was any mention of having to complete a hard-copy form. He did it online and pressed submit?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/08/2019 07:52

Oh see @CointreauVersial has already answered your query. Oops

stucknoue · 19/08/2019 08:01

Top tips - maintenance loans often don't arrive until the first day of term, freshers is beforehand. We gave dd1 £50 and will her sister this year.

For plates etc try and pair up with another kid, it's cheaper to buy in packs of 4 (asda have a set of crockery for £7)

PhannyMcNee · 19/08/2019 08:04

@MrKlaw I’ve not had access to anything and have been entirely reliant on DC1 telling us anything. That’s the hardest part imo.

Thank you @LillianGish - I’m sure it is a shared house but... DC1 is so calm about all of it, I think like your DD, I’m channeling all my anxiety through this one thing!! She wasn’t bothered too much where she ended up (she says) so fingers crossed she gets a good house.

I’ve always been a fairly laid back parent and encouraged the DC to be as independent as possible - it’s come back to bite me on the bum now!! Grin
