Following on from thread 8 which filled up in just 72 hours.

No rush! Hope that is the case.
Dd has 4 days to accept and pay deposit for her accommodation choice.

Danglingmod · 21/08/2019 14:10

Who wears white socks? Is that to go with trainers?

None of my menfolk wear trainers so no white socks here. I think PE ones back in the day came from the school shop!

ZandathePanda · 21/08/2019 14:11

Piggy M&S for white socks. They do a variety of different length ankle ones as I always seem to get ankle lengths wrong!

Dd is like a kid in a sweetshop. Found some nice towels in Asda, a bathroom trug in Argos and a duvet set on offer in M&S. I think we may come to blows on kitchenware. I am trying really hard to avoid Ikea hell.

Piggywaspushed · 21/08/2019 14:13

No, M and S was rubbish, bizarrely!

Yes, white socks are to go with trainers. What do they wear on their feet dangling out of interest?

Alicatz66 · 21/08/2019 14:16

@blametheparents .. Thank you ! My DS going to be in Broadgate too ... will set my reminder !

Danglingmod · 21/08/2019 14:22

Shoes!

Walking shoes, DMs, brogues...

bizzey · 21/08/2019 14:31

Ohh re white socks while i remember to post .

Sports Direct . My ds 's like them .
Only trouble is they are "thickish" and so hot on hot days .

icanbewhatiwant · 21/08/2019 14:34

@Danglingmod my son (going into yr 11) insists on white socks and school trousers that are too short. He looks ridiculous. I went to pick him up early from school for physio app. one day and saw lots of other boys in his year all dressed the same. 😳

Piggywaspushed · 21/08/2019 14:35

Suppose I should have anticipated the DMs with your user name!

Hadn't thought of Sports Direct! So obvious now you say it!

Mustbetimeforachange · 21/08/2019 14:35

Very wise. I managed it with DS1. The only fun bit is spotting all the other 18 year olds trailing around with their mothers!

Danglingmod · 21/08/2019 14:36

Ha ha!

I'm surprised your ds is allowed white socks at school, icanbe!

Danglingmod · 21/08/2019 14:37

(The name is actually a grammar pun...)

Mustbetimeforachange · 21/08/2019 14:37

Vans, almost exclusively, in my experience.

Danglingmod · 21/08/2019 14:40

No, just proper leather shoes or walking shoes where appropriate.

MrKlaw · 21/08/2019 14:41

I understand they may be fed up with uni planning but it doesn’t get easier when they start! Register this, upload that, sign in there.. never ending get used to it now

We’re hapoy to take most of the ‘get stuff ready’ list on us, but he needs to sort bank account, accommodation, registering with the uni etc

Piggywaspushed · 21/08/2019 14:41

I now have images of dangling feet...

bizzey · 21/08/2019 14:49

No emails here apart from accommodation.
He has got a single en suite in a block that seems yo be across the road grom main ampus/halls.
Think it is because he might have said he wanted the quieter area ?

6 to a flat .
He is not a party animal ,so he has accepted as i dont know what would happen if he declined.
I said to him you might get put at the bottom of the list and end up with shared athroom .
Newer block apparently...so hope the extra £200 is worth it !!

simbobs · 21/08/2019 14:49

Re the white sock as the short/rolled up trousers, that is all the rage with boys around here.

bizzey · 21/08/2019 14:51

Appologies for .issed letters...and letters that have appeared oby themselves !!

simbobs · 21/08/2019 14:51

Shimy I had another look at his SFE letter but it only has the money to be paid to the uni split out, and the total amount of his maintenance loan. I assume that this will be paid earlier? Uni doesn't get paid until 8th October, which would be way too late for him to be getting his money.

Danglingmod · 21/08/2019 14:53

Yeah, I know it's the fashion, but schools usually insist on grey or black socks.

Witchend · 21/08/2019 14:55

DD1 has informed me that "most" parents are planning on doing the first food shop for self-catered!

I have said that we'll probably do a first basics shop before we go with dry/long lasting ingredients.

simbobs · 21/08/2019 15:01

We always do a 1st shop with our dd, not just when she started but also when we take her back after holidays, too. There are no convenient supermarkets close to where she was living last year and she had to walk a long way with heavy bags.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 21/08/2019 15:02

I was planning on taking some staples down for DD. And have already picked up toiletries etc for her. I'm happy to send her down there for the first week(s depending on how well she makes things last) with anything I would have had to buy for her here.

She wants the 'meals in advance' catering option adding on to her accommodation for the first term, which I will pay for as my 'contribution' to helpinh her out. She should have enough to get by on comfortably, except the first term's rent is so much higher than the rest that she may not.

So I'm sending her with milk, bread, cereal, some tins, pasta and sauce and fruit and some veg. But the car will be heaving with everything and anything else she wants to take with her, so I have no idea how much room there will be for a bag of food. Especially as her sister wants to come wave her goodbye (and check she's gone so she can move into her bedroom on return) so the backseat is going to be full already.

I must admit I do - they won't have had their maintenance loan through, apart from anything else. I buy them simple things to cook & heat up as the first couple of weeks are full on. also treats like cheese - they will suddenly discover how expensive cheese is. I also freeze a couple of bits & bobs (spag bol plus pasta if we are having it, etc) - not too much as they will have very little freezer space, but it gives them a taste of home if they are in a hurry.
