Where are your DC heading for uni and how much is their accommodation?

And will you/they be paying it?

Dd is off to York. She opted for several options and got given an en suite non catered 38 week let at just under £6k

Luckily her maintenance loan will cover that and some spare. Hurrah for living in Wales as we would be paying a lot of it otherwise.

icanbewhatiwant where is that?

@Ligresa Paston house. Do you know if? I'm hoping it's ok. I'm sure it's one we looked at and food, pots, pans etc were piled up in plastic boxes as not much room in kitchen.

hanahs aunt on a thread about reasonable weekly allowance for self-catered, reasonable figures (after rent, obviously!) were very wide ranging, with £50 - £100 perhaps a 'usual range'. (And some other side as well)

So if your dc is catered, maybe deduct £30 from that range? - though on the other hand £20 a week does sound very low!

En-suite room, self-catered - £5888, with a double bed because he can't fit on a single bed

We went with a company not the uni...
You get £200 a week for 42 weeks.
Rent was £135 a week.

Oh God, my ds is 6ft4 should we have applied for a double? He has a single at home.

Chicago, single room, $11,760 for the room plus $6,528 for her meal plan. Do I win most expensive?

It does include unlimited meals, all bills including wifi, cable TV, tech support, healthcare, mental healthcare, a car service to get them home safely if they're out late, etc.

She has a scholarship from the college though, so we're not paying the full amount. I think very few people actually do.

She's also got a $2k National Merit Scholarship, expects to earn around $3500 through work-study, and has saved $2k from summer work, so she'll be all set for books and any other expenses without needing money from us.

Mines going in to 2nd year at Southampton but last year in halls was about £5200 for a sc, en-suite with a really crappy mattress and dire kitchen. Her maintenance loan didn't even cover that.

This year it's a shared house with the contract running from July-July, so I effect paying for the whole summer when she's been home and working. That's £4800 for the year plus bills on top.

Just found out ... £5600. Its en suite self catering and madam is paying for it herself (sponsored student so she has enough just) we are paying £30 a week for food, toiletries etc (because we don't charge her sister rent who lives at home for university) and I will pay travel to and from once a term if I'm not picking her up by car

So - given that he has bike and bus pass sorted; 2 meals per day sorted including at the weekend and no bills to budget for - what is a reasonable weekly allowance?

Dd has the exact same plus we pay for her phone. Her weekly allowance is:
£18 per week lunches & snacks (slightly more as she doesn’t have access to cooking facilities and she’s doing a very physical course)
£10 per week socialising/spending
£5 per week toiletries
£20 per week books/clothes/equipment/trips. (Quite a lot of specialist clothing etc required)

£4375 for shared facilities and self catering. Was the cheapest option so really pleased he got it. He doesn't have an ensuite at home so why does he need one at uni. He will be coming home at weekends for his work. Any fellow Chi students out there?

SistersOfMerci · 19/08/2019 18:04

flyingarcher dd had 7 of them in her halls, that would've been a nightmare in her book waiting for the bathroom. She works over the summer full time in a well paid job so she had the money to spare for her own en-suite.

Ligresa · 19/08/2019 18:22

If dd could have guaranteed all girls in the flat she would have shared. As it is, she's a big busty girl and felt intimidated by potetially have to share a bathroom with 8 blokes she didnt know.

Report
SistersOfMerci · 19/08/2019 18:25

Ligressa mine's not busty but she has really erratic periods that can come from no-where and need immediate loo facilities. And she did have 3 males in her flat as it turned out so we were very glad we went en-suite.

Aston. 6500 for 48 weeks self catered en-suite on campus. He doesnt qualify for any fees or loans as we are expats. So we are paying 9250 in fees plus 6500 accommodation and living costs. This is gonna be expensive.

We are paying the accommodation cost 😬 and we definitely won't be going on holiday for a few years.

I think ds will have to have en suite when his time comes as due to his asd he won’t use public/shared toilets.

TapasForTwo · 19/08/2019 19:05

Comefromaway make sure you let the accommodation people know this and he should get what he wants.

"£10 per week socialising/spending"

So your DD doesn't intend socialising very much then?

Report
Comefromaway · 19/08/2019 19:36

Her core hours are 9am - 6pm and she has a couple of 8am starts and a 7pm finish. She’s usually wrecked. Friday night is curry night in her house (either home made or supermarket), she also sometimes goes into town after work on a Saturday and treats he self to a coffee from a little independent she likes.

She doesn’t drink outside the home but did moan at having to pay £2 per tonic water at the last event she went to.

Comefromaway · 19/08/2019 19:38

Tapas, we are going to start researching early. Liverpool Uni for example offer a lot of support/accommodation help for students with an asd. At Salford though you struggle if it’s your insurance choice.
