And will you/they be paying it?

Dd is off to York. She opted for several options and got given an en suite non catered 38 week let at just under £6k

Luckily her maintenance loan will cover that and some spare. Hurrah for living in Wales as we would be paying a lot of it otherwise.

The annoying thing with Lincoln (kind of opposite to the Oxford problem!) is the long contracts - 46 weeks, so they are often , in effect, paying for many weeks they aren't using.

WorriedMutha · 18/08/2019 11:21

Manchester. £4184 for 42 weeks. She opted for the basic rooms in the prison block but it is apparently party central. I can't believe how much some of you guys are paying.

RonnieScotts · 18/08/2019 12:45

University of Liverpool

£5811.00 per year accommodation

(DS's £4166.00 maintenance loan will not cover it)

We will be paying in the shortfall and also giving him a weekly allowance for living expenses.

Ligresa · 18/08/2019 12:48

Swansea. 5800. 40 weeks, ensuite self catered with a sea view!

Ligresa · 18/08/2019 12:49

4k maintenance but we pay the rest plus 75 a week living.

Escape we are in Yorkshire too! It's a great city, dd has loved it. Take some sort of trolley with you for moving in day because you just have to park anywhere and it can be a walk to halls. Also you might want to set aside funds for a train ticket or two home in the first term as a lot of the Scottish kids go home and dd found it a little quiet at first. What is she studying? Dd is half way through a medicine degree.
Lots of nice places to eat etc with them when you visit. We like going along to Broughty Ferry. Also St. Andrews is nice for food and beach.

Northernlurker · 18/08/2019 13:08

And tips from dd - take a good coat, it's fairly dry but can be cold and windy. Don't rush over where you live next year, dd didn't settle that till March. Average rent without bills is 325 a month and quite a lot of parents buy places as property is affordable. Be used to walking up hills
She says the black card is good value as freshers alone can be expensive for events and the black card lasts all year.

Northernlurker · 18/08/2019 13:09

Also dd got good use out of her bike and says the campus gym is decent value,

nokidshere · 18/08/2019 13:27

Last yr in Southampton was £5290 in a small en suite self catered, this yr he's in a student house and it's about 4K plus bills.

DS2 is off to Northampton and he is getting a large en suite, self catered for £5800

Neither of their maintenance loans will cover the rent Confused

TapasForTwo · 18/08/2019 13:31

"I can't believe how much some of you guys are paying."

I know that a student's happiness very much depends on their flatmates, but as DD suffers from CFS staying in party central, skanky accommodation would probably be a deal breaker, so we will suck up the cost for a year.

titchy · 18/08/2019 13:35

Cardiff, £5300 part catered.

Maismoo · 18/08/2019 13:36

Falmouth
En-suite room - £5888

Shimy · 18/08/2019 13:41

This thread is a great eye opener!

Cardiff: Part catered with en-suite - £5,729.

I feel blessed Grin.

Shimy · 18/08/2019 13:44

@titchy 👋😄

I said this on the other thread...I let my son put the best accommodation first choice as we thought he'd get the full maintenance loan. My husband sold his business 2017 and retired. I assumed they would ask for parents earnings April 2018-April 2019 which is after he retired. But they are asking for almost 2 years ago...he sold his business that year meaning he earned more that year than ever before (the money has since gone into other ventures) so he certainly won't earn that amount again. It means my son will now only get the minimum loan.
I do have some savings so will make the rest up.
I guess I shouldn't assume. It does mean ds should get the full loan the following year. In the plus side he won't be borrowing so much.

icanbewhatiwant · 18/08/2019 13:56

I forgot to say accommodation not being allocated until tomorrow. But I think it was about £6000 for 38 weeks.

SoonerthanIthought · 18/08/2019 13:57

"DS1 is going to Bournemouth Arts and has been allocated brand new accommodation at an eye watering £7200 self catered en-suite."

Gosh that is indeed a lot! Had ds1 asked for cheaper options but got allocated to more expensive?

I think in some ways hall accommodation has become more expensive because it's a higher spec than in the old days (en suite bathrooms for a start!!) and there is obviously a demand for that, but I wonder if at the same time as building new high-end halls, universities are building some cheaper ones as well?

Piggywaspushed · 18/08/2019 14:01

icanbe : it's a ridiculously complicated form but there is one to fill in if your earnings are different in the coming tax year. My DH resigned form work so we filled it in. (and then he unresigned. Gnashes teeth and glares). Worth phoning them up to ask : it could make a big difference for you.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 18/08/2019 14:11

I'm still reeling at the thought of £245 a week (£11k?) in London. We didn't encourage dd to look at London due to the high costs incurred.

£9k at Bristol - is that the most expensive, and catered? I was thinking £7k was a lot - but maybe it is more mainstream than I thought?

titchy · 18/08/2019 14:35

Shimy 👍😀
