Where are your DC heading for uni and how much is their accommodation?

And will you/they be paying it?

Dd is off to York. She opted for several options and got given an en suite non catered 38 week let at just under £6k

Luckily her maintenance loan will cover that and some spare. Hurrah for living in Wales as we would be paying a lot of it otherwise.

Mine's off to Birmingham, self catered, cost is about £5200.

Mine too.

DS in final year at Sheffield Hallam. They don’t have their own accommodation but they have ‘affiliated’ firms.First year was a room in a shared flat , wasn’t the greatest and his flatmates frankly lived like pigs and weren’t his kind of people, that was £95 a week. Last year he lived in a six person new build flat which was very nice, £100 a week not including bills. This year he’s in a four person terraced house which is £96.00 a week inc bills, looked a bit grim on the estate agents website but it’s all been done up and is actually really nice.

When I add it up , it’s cost a fair bit, we paid the rent and he lives on his loan ( we only get the minimum as we both work) plus top up of his summer job, he’s thankfully really good with money and always has some left each year! He’s our only one and has had a lovely time, met some great friends and from what I can see appears to be working hard.

Good luck to all your DCs - such an exciting time for them !

Horsemad · 17/08/2019 22:44

DS going into 3rd year in a house (was in Halls for Yr 1&2).

His rent is £440/mth for 12 mths, which works out about £1500 cheaper than Halls. This is in Newcastle.

Horsemad · 17/08/2019 22:51

Forgot to say, his house rent doesn't include bills.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 17/08/2019 22:55

Kent, £5018 part catered. Did you all apply for their loans ages ago? We've only just applied now, as we weren't sure he'd actually be going till we got his results

Mustbetimeforachange · 17/08/2019 23:05

DrMadeleine I think the loan payments are split so that they get more in April as it is supposed to take them through to September (haha). In the final year they get less, presumably because they are leaving in May/June time. DS's halls are more the first term as well.

TapasForTwo · 17/08/2019 23:15

Newcastle £5.5k 40 weeks. Self catered, en suite.
Loan won't cover it.

stucknoue · 17/08/2019 23:48

Still waiting to hear - I'm told Southampton is always slow. Should be about £5200 en-suite self catering. We are paying £150 a month, rest from loans, savings and a bursary (actually 2)

stucknoue · 17/08/2019 23:52

@InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream

The deadline was May to have money guaranteed for the start of term. The university will wait for the fees and the halls (assuming university owned) but you will need to fund everything else until the loan arrives, in previous years late applicants have waited as late as mid October.

RedHelenB · 18/08/2019 00:03

Think dd2s is about 6000 sc at Liverpool but they all cost roughly the same and they are nice rooms. Dd1s was over a grand cheaper when she was in her first year at Newcastle.

MarchingFrogs · 18/08/2019 00:28

Mine's off to Birmingham, self catered, cost is about £5200.

DD also going to Birmingham, has got the new Unite halls (Battery Park), which is about £6650. Her late Granny is financing it, so to speak. Sod's law, getting the most expensive one on her list, but it is handy for a good falafel place if she gets fed up with cooking.

minesawine · 18/08/2019 00:32

Nottingham trent accommodation is £5,800. I will pay this and DC will live on £5,200 maintenance loan. Do you think £100 per week is a lot to live on. I am starting to think so

ShanghaiDiva · 18/08/2019 03:39

My ds is going into year 2 and we paid 145 per week for self catering (only SC at Warwick) with an en suite. Accommodation ranged from 80 to 180 per week so not as expensive as some of the unis mentioned up thread.
He is now going into a shared house at 98 per week (excluding bills and four of them sharing) for 10 months of the year and 49 per week for 2 months of the year.

yearinyearout · 18/08/2019 06:34

You're lucky her loan will cover it OP. DS's halls were 6.5k and his maintenance loan was £3800.

yearinyearout · 18/08/2019 06:41

@DrMadelinemaxwell the payments are each term (DS's are usually fairly equal). He pays it over to our account as soon as it arrives and the rent gets paid from our account (as we have to top it up anyway). We then pay his weekly living expenses onto a monzo card, which works brilliantly for budgeting. It's linked to an app so they can see exactly where the money is going.

Itscoldouthere · 18/08/2019 06:46

DS1 is going to Bournemouth Arts and has been allocated brand new accommodation at an eye watering £7200 self catered en-suite.
He’s not very happy as they only have CGI pictures and he’s worried that they don’t have real photos yet, he thinks it might still be a building site.
Still waiting to hear what accommodation DS2 gets at UEA.
It’s going to be an expensive year as we are paying for their accommodation.

Screamqueenz · 18/08/2019 06:57

Birmingham her as well, he's in the tennis courts.

BunchMunch · 18/08/2019 06:58

Newcastle, en suite room in self catered halls £6116 for 44 weeks. It's her first year.

No maintenance loan as DDad left money to pay for uni for her.
I think she'll go into private accom in year 2.

TapasForTwo · 18/08/2019 07:13

BunchMunch I think students don't have much option for year 2 as halls are usually for first years only.

Piggywaspushed · 18/08/2019 08:15

One of the criteria in selecting unis for us was accommodation costs. Some are so expensive! £5900 was our ceiling.

MrsBartlet · 18/08/2019 08:24

We are waiting to hear from UEA tomorrow but we are expecting it to be around 6k for self catering if he gets an en-suite room. We will be paying this and he can live off his maintenance loan. Dd just graduated from Cambridge and her bills were between 4.5- 5k each year and that was catered and included an ensuite in her first year. So much cheaper!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 18/08/2019 08:25

Oh I'm extremely grateful that dds loan more than covers her maintenance.

ElizabethBennetismybestfriend · 18/08/2019 08:32

Over £6000 at Liverpool but it is lovely.

escape · 18/08/2019 09:46

@Northernlurker Hiya, you are the first mention of Dundee I have seen all week! DD is going, it was her first choice and accomodation is sorted - any advice from a seasoned Dundee parent would be appreciated! We are in Yorkshire and it is 5 hours away from us...

zxcv123 · 18/08/2019 10:40

Oxford - will be between £4k and £5.3k depending on which room is allocated. However, that's for about 26 weeks I think and they need to empty their rooms every holiday.

Also, no cooking is allowed so they will need to buy all their meals in Hall which we think will be about £75 pw.
