I've never done this before but hopefully I have managed to set up a new thread for UEA specific posts.
Perhaps someone can let me know if it's worked!

It's worked. Thanks for setting it up.

My DS is doing Physical Education, and his accommodation is in the Village (Willow block).

MrsBartlet · 16/08/2019 20:15

Another UEA parent checking in Smile My ds will be studying politics. We don't know what accommodation he has been allocated yet as it was his insurance place. Hopefully we should find out on Monday.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/08/2019 20:30

Thanks for setting up the thread @juicy0.

DS doing Human Geography. Again as with @MrsBartlet's DS, accommodation TBC as it was DS's insurance university.

However, he is really happy to going to UEA and with the benefit of hindsight think it will better suit him than Durham would have done.

sluj · 16/08/2019 20:34

Thank you, DS2 is up for BSc Geography hoping for zigurrats.
As I mentioned DS1 is already there so I have some insider info!!

juicy0 · 16/08/2019 20:35

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 my DD is also doing geography

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 16/08/2019 20:41

@juicy0 well done.

DD doing History and politics. Her accommodation is barton.

We have bought the ridiculously expensive wristband because in my experience (third dc at uni) that it is a lot of fun and a great way to meet ppl and break the ice.

MrsBartlet · 16/08/2019 20:41

I am a sales rep and I have a customer who is based on the UEA campus. I was winding ds up earlier telling him that I would be sure to get an appointment there for freshers week so that I could check up on him 😂

icanbewhatiwant · 16/08/2019 20:42

My son is doing Biology at UEA. It was his first choice university. Mainly because it is our nearest one.
He will be living there the first year. We are only about 45 mins drive away. Less than 30 miles but he wants to fully experience university life. He can make a decision whether to move to Norwich or commute the following years.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/08/2019 20:42

Oh I defo think we should have a meet-up when dropping off our DC!

Just catching up on the other thread (been out today). I found mention of the freshers' wristband on the UEA SU part of their website but a brief scan didn't reveal the cost or how to buy one? Any pointers gratefully appreciated. Am I going to have a heart attack when I see the cost of one???

TakeMeToYourLiar · 16/08/2019 20:43

This is making me feel old! UEA alum who graduated 10 years ago Shock

icanbewhatiwant · 16/08/2019 20:44

Ok thicko here...I have no idea what the wristband is. I don’t even know what freshers is. University is new to me. Can you tell? 🤣

icanbewhatiwant · 16/08/2019 20:48

Ok...first week at university is freshers week. I can see that now. My son would be embarrassed by me.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 16/08/2019 20:50

@NewModelArmyMayhem18
there is a link on the UEA SU instagram bio.
you (DS) needs to log in and make an account.
It works out at about a tenner a night.
It is a freshers week fortnight wristband with entries to all the parties etc
Cheaper up front than to buy each night individually
Lots of themes so bring stuff so you can be ready
I would suggest following UEA on insta and Facebook for info

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/08/2019 20:53

@icanbewhatiwant the wristband (which has to be bought) allows access to the freshers' week events. It was never a thing when I was a student but now all the new students (aka freshers) seem to spend a week socialising and settling into university life before they properly start their courses.

Hope that makes sense?

Bluegrass · 16/08/2019 20:56

TakeMeToYourLiar - me too, except I graduated 20 years ago! Loved it there, happy memories.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/08/2019 20:58

@mumsiedarlingrevolta thanks for the info. DS is not exactly shy but he doesn't drink and never been clubbing, so I am already wondering whether he's going to enjoy freshers' week (and dressing up!). Still, it's all part of university life's rich tapestry.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 16/08/2019 21:03

@NewModelArmyMayhem18

I think they have lots like your DS. There are lots of students that are there to support and help draw in and include all-there will be activities that has nothing to do with clubbing etc-ice breakers and things.

Does he have any interest in joining in a bit?

icanbewhatiwant · 16/08/2019 21:05

Thanks newmodel. I just looked it up. I can only find info on 2018 freshers at UEA but I know what it is now.
My son does like to drink but tends to be the driver if he's going out with friends, so obviously doesn't drink. So he's never had much. He's never been clubbing either. I am glad I won't be there to see what he's up to.

MrsBartlet · 16/08/2019 21:06

NewModelArmy - as I said on the other thread dd was exactly like your ds when she went to university. She decided she was absolutely not going to go clubbing for the first time with a load of strangers so she didn't. There were plenty of other things to do and she made lots of friends. She went clubbing later in term when she had made good friends that she wanted to go with. I think it is easy for them to get hung up on these things before they go.

sluj · 16/08/2019 21:07

If you look on the SU website there are actually events listed for no alcohol. If he joins any societies, there should be some social events too. There is a Facebook group called something like Official UEA welcome 2019 where some of the societies have started advertising. They arent all raucous alcohol fuelled events. Does your DS have any particular interests or hobbies?

sluj · 16/08/2019 21:10

www.facebook.com/ueastudentsunion/

Heres the facebook page for the SU. Hope the link works

juicy0 · 16/08/2019 21:10

The lovely thing about Norwich is that there are plenty of bars and cafes for those who like to socialise but aren't really into clubbing or drinking to excess.

OP posts:
TakeMeToYourLiar · 16/08/2019 21:26

Just to point out you can go clubbing and not drink. I did third year because I had work in the morning (placement year!)

MrsBartlet · 16/08/2019 21:33

Indeed TakeMeToYourLiar! Ds went out last night to celebrate and decided to drive. I did offer to go and pick him up but he said he wanted to try going out without drinking as he is very into his sport and is worried that if social life at university was based on drinking then his sport would suffer. I did suggest A level result night might not be the night to start but he seemed to have a good time!

GoldenRuby · 16/08/2019 21:37

@MrsBartlet what sports is your DS into? For my DS it's hockey and cricket.
