I've never done this before but hopefully I have managed to set up a new thread for UEA specific posts.
Perhaps someone can let me know if it's worked!

Or maybe because DC don't use FB as their preferred social media platform??? That disjoint between the generations? DS has a page nominally but he doesn't use it very often at all.

I have mentioned the freshers' wristband but DS currently sitting on the fence. He obviously doesn't want to miss out totally but can't help but think that he will not want to be partying every day for a week/fortnight. Any ideas @sluj which events are the 'must dos'?

juicy0 · 19/08/2019 08:34

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 yes that's very true, DD rarely checks in to FB.
There are wristbands for week one and two with events organised every night which is full on. DD says she might prefer to buy tickets just for some of the events but I wonder if individual tickets will be quite limited. I wouldn't want her to be the only one in her flat not going out for the first few nights as I worry she would feel isolated straight away.
Any advice greatly appreciated @sluj

My ds doesn't really look on Facebook either.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/08/2019 08:40

@juicy0 I'm with you totally. Don't want to find that DS is sitting in alone while all around him party! On the other hand not keen to be forking out £60-£120 if he's going to go to one event and then decide the whole freshers' week shebang isn't for him!!

MrsBartlet · 19/08/2019 08:53

Ds and I looked at the wristbands yesterday and he didn't want to go to all the evening events which were included. He wants to go to the welcome party and the ball but he also liked the look of some of the other events like the ones included on the daytime wristband. He is going to wait until he finds out which accommodation he is allocated and starts chatting to his flat mates to make a decision.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/08/2019 09:02

@MrsBartlet that sounds very sensible. I think going to none of the freshers' events is not an option.

I have a feeling that DS is a bit in denial about going to university at this stage. He is currently rather shirty about discussing anything related with us.

NotSorry · 19/08/2019 09:23

I may take him on a 'learn frugal shopping trip tips' expedition this coming week. He is quite careful with money but there's plenty of room for improvement

I'm doing this too - Aldi here we come!

MrsBartlet · 19/08/2019 09:30

I sympathise NewModelArmy. Ds is really ready for it though he admits to being a little nervous. When dd went 4 years ago she kept crying saying she wasn't sure she wanted to go (after having worked really hard and being desperate to go until her place was actually confirmed). Of course she loved it as soon as she got there- it was all just nerves.

Missyelliottsaysso · 19/08/2019 10:07

Ok so my DD received an email this morning to say she will be advised of her room allocation later today.
It states the only room availability’s are: En suite campus, standard twin ziggurat, two bedroom unit, Pablo Fanque house and Homestay.
She is now panicking that she won’t get into her favoured area of the village.
I’m assuming that they have already allocated the rooms and these are the only availability if she’s not happy with what she’s offered?

MrsBartlet · 19/08/2019 10:19

Ds has the same email and it is not very clear. I would presume that that list is what is left if you want to swap but not sure.

Missyelliottsaysso · 19/08/2019 10:34

Fingers crossed...she really doesn’t want a two bedroom unit. She is very sociable and would drive the other person mad!

icanbewhatiwant · 19/08/2019 10:35

Yes my son has the same email. It's not very fair if they've given all the conditional offers the best rooms. But not much we can do.

icanbewhatiwant · 19/08/2019 10:38

Unconditional I meant to write.

MrsBartlet · 19/08/2019 11:37

Ds has just got his accommodation offer - Constable Terrace which is campus ensuite. We are happy with that as campus ensuite was his second choice.

Missyelliottsaysso · 19/08/2019 11:54

Nothing here yet but if they’re doing it alphabetically we will last to know.

MrsBartlet · 19/08/2019 12:11

We are towards the end of the alphabet so I don't think they can be doing it alphabetically. Fingers-crossed you get what you want!

icanbewhatiwant · 19/08/2019 12:15

My son is quite near end of alphabet he's had his. He's not that happy. He's got en suite campus. He wanted Barton. The campus ones we looked at were quite old and run down. The en suite had mouldy walls. Maybe he's got used to us living in a new house 😀

Itscoldouthere · 19/08/2019 12:16

DS has just had his accommodation email he’s been given en-suite campus Britten House, he’s happy although it’s a single bed, he was hoping for something a bit bigger as he’s quite tall.

Itscoldouthere · 19/08/2019 12:21

DS has en suite campus as his second choice, his first choice was Hickling & Barton but maybe they all went to unconditional offers, who knows.
At least it’s cheaper than my other son who is having to pay £7200 for his swanky new accommodation at a different uni.

Missyelliottsaysso · 19/08/2019 12:21

Yay! DD got what she wanted...Village en-suite!
Hope she’ll still be ok with that 15 minute walk in the winter months!

icanbewhatiwant · 19/08/2019 12:26

I forgot to say Paston house. We didn't look round that one. Just read reviews. They aren't very good. It says kitchen is terrible for the price, one of the smallest kitchens on site. It also says lacking in social space.
Did anyone look round Paston? I'm hoping it's ok.

sluj · 19/08/2019 13:00

Happy son here with first choice single Zigurrat right opposite his dept.
He only wanted the first weeks fresher band as he thinks second week events might be easier to get into on the door. I'll ask DS1 later whether or not events sell out.
I think his departmental fresher timetable will be pretty full on too with day time field trips and talks so that should keep him busy for a while.
Exciting stuff

Itscoldouthere · 19/08/2019 13:10

I loved the Zigurrat rooms but DS wanted an en-suite.

Does anyone know if the departments have put timetable up yet?

CointreauVersial · 19/08/2019 13:14

DD1 has been offered Village Plus Ensuite, which we're happy with. She grumbled a bit about the walk to campus, but she liked the slightly smaller number of people per flat, and the modern finish. And the bill-payer (a.k.a. Bank of Mum & Dad) liked the fact that it's a fair bit cheaper than the on-campus equivalent. Grin Being a princess, she refused to contemplate any of the cheaper/non-ensuite options, of course. Hmm

CointreauVersial · 19/08/2019 13:16

Regarding the "dead" FB group, I'm not surprised. Does anyone under the age of 30 use FB anymore?
