If you are looking to open a Santander student account, you need to do it online. Found out the hard way after a wasted trip to the bank. (No not sure if this is the case if you already bank with them and just want to upgrade the account).

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 12/08/2019 11:06

That's really helpful to know @GoldenRuby.

To confirm that our DC can only apply for a student bank account once they've got confirmation of their university place? Is that right?

For uni - check they’re up to date with MMR , HPV ( from sept boys can be vaccinated too ) and meninigitis ACWY and B and consider flu .

DrMadelineMaxwell · 12/08/2019 11:43

Dd opened her student bank account a few months ago. She needed to show them her letter offering confirming she had her chosen uni as her firm place. This was Lloyd's.

GoldenRuby · 12/08/2019 11:58

Yes, you need evidence of a confirmed place. I expect the banks will have a rush after Thursday!

bizzey · 12/08/2019 12:01

Re the injections ...i cant be sure but a tetnas booster might be needed as well.

sluj · 12/08/2019 12:20

From this morning's visit - Santander wont let us upgrade his bank account to a student one until he has the confirmation letter (I assume they will accept emails). They did make us an appointment to come in and do it at the end of August though. They confirmed the bank account number will stay the same and the student railcard offer is still on.

Malbecfan · 12/08/2019 12:54

Santander will accept a screenshot of the confirmation from UCAS. DD has an appointment booked with them in case she can't change her account online, but hopefully all should be ok.

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 check with your existing house contents insurer if you have one. I was about to take out a policy when DD1 was heading off to uni 2 years ago. I rang our existing insurer, NFU, to see how much they charged and was very happy to discover that as long as she is in university-owned accommodation and her room is kept locked, all her possessions including her bike are already covered. As she's at Cambridge in a college which provides accommodation for the full 4 years, we're very happy. DD2 will be heading elsewhere, but in her first year at least, she too will be covered.

Sorry, joining this thread rather late in the day. DD2 has an unconditional offer, so Thursday is not looming for her as it did for DD1. However, she suffered a nasty injury at work involving a wine glass and late night (Friday) trip to A&E so is a bit fed up that she can't work or drive this week and her previous good if tired mood has dropped to being a stroppy mare again, rather like when A levels were happening...!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 12/08/2019 12:57

Lloyds were a pain. They wanted a paper copy as they wanted to then photocopy it for their files. So we had to come home, print out her confirmation email then go back.

fiftiesmum · 12/08/2019 14:11

It does look like some universities are set to give places to students who miss their grades the wonderful opportunity to do a foundation year. I feel this is a bit of a con was they will be charging several thousand a year in fees and no guarantee of getting into the first year proper. I am wondering if DC's would be better resitting the problem A level and maybe taking a further subject in one year at a local college of things turn out worse than hoped for on Thursday

Cherryblossomandcornflakes · 12/08/2019 14:46

Jumping in here a little late to the party but I’ve been lurking for a while! All a little tense in the Cherryblossom house. Where we live there are two local (ish) unis, and then after that we have no other options without getting a plane or boat so there’s a lot of pressure to get into either her firm or insurance. Clearing isn’t really an option as she doesn’t want to travel to the mainland. Looking for BBB or BCC, which doesn’t sound too bad but it’s the specific B that could go any way!

Does anyone feel that they can’t quite emotionally commit to their DC going away yet, until results are through? I’m an over thinker and over planner and yet I can’t even begin to think about stuff that needs to be bought, bank accounts, vaccinations etc meaning that come Thursday I’ve got 3-4 weeks to prepare physically and mentally!

Witchend · 12/08/2019 16:19

Yes! Barring a complete disaster she should get into her insurance anyway. But there's such a difference in place between her firm and insurance that I can't really get my head around her going until she knows which one.
Once she knows where she's going then I can start thinking about her going and get things sorted.

Ingles2 · 12/08/2019 16:46

I haven't done anything about either of my ds' going away... I'll believe it when I see the results :D

Piggywaspushed · 12/08/2019 17:32

DS made vague attempt to use washing machine and tumble drier today : but when I came home to wet duvet , I suspected it had not made it into the tumble drier (and wet bedding in the laundry basket upstairs rather than the plastic laundry basket in the kitchen. Apparently I 'was not clear enough')...however, getting it out of washing machine is a small victory.

Productive day , though. DH and I went for an afternoon tea so DS (under heavy supervision!) made chicken teriyaki for himself and DS2. With prawn crackers as a treat.

The recipe was v simple and came from a book called Nosh, which definitely has a few good things in it. Silly design though because you can't open the book out flat : no idea why cookbook designers don't think this through! I actually might buy another copy for DS2 to get cracking on from September!

FrameyMcFrame · 12/08/2019 18:08

Yep, I've done literally nothing about her going yet. I can't worry about all that until I know she got in somewhere.

Thing is, she has decided she doesn't want her insurance place at all, the course is now not what she wants at all.
... so if she doesn't get her first choice we will be in clearing and limbo land.

Feel sick about it all now....

ZandathePanda · 12/08/2019 18:19

Dd has been bombarded with emails from several different universities and accommodation companies. One was from her first choice, which gave useful information about results day. It had, rather cryptically ‘Fh’ at the end. Firm holder??!HmmGrin

TapasForTwo · 12/08/2019 18:44

I think I managed to do this when DD accepted her unconditional offer months ago (due to already having A level results).

Good luck to everyone for Thursday.

Ragwort · 12/08/2019 19:05

My DS’s free razor arrived this morning Grin . No idea if he’s getting emails from unis as he is away for a short holiday, back on Wednesday ..... (obviously not at all anxious!). I have started collecting a few things for when he leaves, only spare bits and pieces, I am not prepared to rush out and buy everything new only for it to get lost or trashed.

strawberrieshortcake · 12/08/2019 19:11

Eve Bennet just posted a video about results day and how to prepare if any of you or your DC’s are interested.

Flyingarcher · 12/08/2019 20:10

Good luck to those waiting for results. We are sorted here with accommodation ( he got the cheapest - yay), and he is busy seeing loads of theatre. I've been a bit worried about him as he has been in his room being very tired a lot. He is going to work and has jollied up this evening. He finally asked what happens if he gets there and after a month thinks uni isn't for him? Sensible question. I think he's lost a bit of the excitement of it all and now it is a reality and we are talking about big things like money and loans and stuff and I've bought some of the really boring books on the reading list (really dull, incomprehensible and outdated).

So what does happen if they decide it isn't for them. Who do they talk to and what happens regarding the loans and fees etc. Any thoughts I can relay to him much appreciated.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 12/08/2019 20:59

Sigh. A third fail on the driving test for dd today. But at least she's pragmatic about it.

TapasForTwo · 12/08/2019 21:01

Commiserations to your DD DrMadelineMaxwell

bizzey · 12/08/2019 22:30
