MrKlaw, is it your DS who worries about having nominated an insurance choice with a grade requirement so much lower than his firm, or you who is worrying about a perceived difference in prestige? If your DS genuinely felt that the Warwick course was his first preference and Southampton his second - rather than it being a question of, if I can't have Warwick, I don't care where else I go, it might as well be Southampton - then what is the problem?

But yes, if his results aren't good enough for Warwick but 'too good' for Southampton, then he can ask to be released into Clearing and apply for somewhere in between. There are thousands of 'prestigious' courses in Clearing. And ICAS has a 'release me into Clearing' button this year, so no need even to enter into discussion with the institution from which one wants to be releasedSmile.

UCAS...

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/08/2019 06:47

Results day could be very straightforward or a bit more complicated for dd depending on grades.

If she gets A A A A - history, psychology, English, Welsh bacc then she will be off to York.

Should one of her 3 main subject's slip, and she got a B in AS last year then it will be Liverpool.

If she makes an A* I one of the first 3 subject's then she will be filling in an onli e firm and waiting for a phone call from Cambridge as they initially rejected her after interview but then emailed go Sat she qualified for their adjustment process.

She already has an A* in Welsh bacc (If they don't change the grade you dates on moderation) but whereas York and Liverpool view it as a worthy subject, Cambridge does not, so it won't count.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/08/2019 06:49

That should say she got a B in English last year and high As in the rest at AS. She has been doing well in all her mocks though, so has her hopes set on getting an A.

Danglingmod · 06/08/2019 07:49

I think there's a good chance York will still take her with slipped grade/s. If Durham and Warwick did last year...

Good luck to all Scottish parents and students for today!

Can anyone advise me of the process for applying after results? Presumably DS will just get accepted or rejected straight away? I’m now thinking that this may put him at a disadvantage if he doesn’t get AAA or AAB ( the offer for most of his preferred universities so far) as they won’t lower their offers at that stage of the year?

MarchingFrogs · 06/08/2019 11:47

Making a first application after results is the same as applying through Clearing:

Did someone on here recommend a good student cook book a while back? I need one that is good for a complete non gastronome numpty who rarely knows how to turn a ring on....

I am beginning to feel stressed...

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/08/2019 13:33

Dd has just had a letter from Bangor asking her to please consider that they have places left if she doesn't get her firm or insurance.
It was a lovely course, History and Heritage, and they were originally offering her £3.5k if she made them her firm then still got her As.
She wanted a higher ranking uni though.

boys3 · 06/08/2019 18:19

labelle is that applying to start this September (so process as per marching frogs ) or for September 2020 entry?

justasking111 · 06/08/2019 19:56

When do they start chasing us for tuition fees. Have sorted accommodation but ds says no requests for fees yet.

MarchingFrogs · 06/08/2019 20:27

@Piggywaspushed, there are various ' meal in a mug'/ 'cake in a mug' recipe books that are good for one person. I also gave DS1 a selection of supermarket recipe magazines (freebies from Tesco, Asda, Co-op etc), as they tend to have plenty of recipes of the simple weekday suppers using 4 ingredients and only taking 30 minutes door to table variety.

MarchingFrogs · 06/08/2019 20:30

Forgot to say, The Works is good for recipe books of the 'in a mug' type.

Mustbetimeforachange · 06/08/2019 20:33

Fees are paid directly, you won't be involved unless not taking any loan.

justasking111 · 06/08/2019 20:40

We are not taking out a loan, which is why I asked. Puzzled as to why we have heard nothing, what to do next?

MrKlaw · 06/08/2019 20:46

@MarchingFrogs my DS. He’s confident in his results but not confident enough for aaa* which is what Warwick need. Especially as the margins are so narrow at that level.

boys3 · 06/08/2019 21:50

just is your DS dependent on A level results next week to confirm the place? Tuition fee loans are not received by Unis until student confirmed as started (at least that was DS1 experience), and then I think there are two separate tranches. I would not be too eager to give cash away until I needed to :) Suggest contacting the Uni finance office once nearer to term start, although I would also think the Uni website would set out details if paying direct.

justasking111 · 06/08/2019 22:21

No Boys3 unconditional offer. We sorted out and paid the accommodation a few weeks ago. Perhaps the ball has not started rolling. Checked uni. site no help. Will have another look.

Piggywaspushed · 06/08/2019 22:36

So.. think this came up before but I was away. Registering to vote forms came today and could add DS but does that mean he then loses ability to register in Lincoln, which he ahs no address for yet?

Where we live now is such a lost cause. Huge vile Dorries majority. Lincoln is an ultra marginal, which he would find quite exciting!

Ragwort · 06/08/2019 22:44

My DS is now getting notifications from his accommodation (NTU) about dates he has to pay & reminding him that he only had 48 hours to cancel the contract if he doesn't get in ..... luckily he's had his insurance offer changed to 'unconditional' but if he ends up going there we then have the challenge of finding accommodation at very short notice. Not looking forward to next week ....
Mine my DS hasn't (or hadn't followed up) any opportunities to chat with other students in his accommodation choice, maybe because he's ended up with the private halls?
I am getting the minimum stuff for him to take, he can have old stuff from home, I am not buying new stuff ..... luckily I manage a charity shop so can buy stuff very cheaply!

minesawine · 07/08/2019 00:34

Ragwort My Ds is very chatty with his hall mates and also course mates, some of which are in private accommodation. He said again today that he wont go anywhere else now and will 'work' for the yea, whatever that means. I haven't heard anything from NTU about accommodation payments, I guess they will wait until after results day

Danglingmod · 07/08/2019 06:39

You can be registered to vote in two places, @Piggywaspushed, you just can't actually vote twice in a GE - you can choose where to vote (although you can vote in both sets of local elections if they fall at different times).

Piggywaspushed · 07/08/2019 08:22

Thanks dangling : do they get voting stuff sent to them or do they need to take initiative? I just wonder how anyone knows their address etc. So much I don't know!

Xenia · 07/08/2019 08:26

Good luck to those waiting for results (my sons are already at university.) On the question above about fees (for those not taking loans) it was quite late on we were asked to pay. I paid on 10th October (I just checked and that was to Bristol in year 1). I probably paid when it was required and first requested as I am usually quite prompt. I think I had to remind my twins to log on and check if any requests for payment had been made. I paid their hall fees on the same day. It may differ from year to year however and university to university (and most people have student loans so not relevant to most).
