We have been to the pub and a pint has been imbibed!

ProlificLurker · 27/07/2019 16:52

Hope your son had a great time Piggy

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/07/2019 09:57

Did your DS enjoy his pint, @Piggywaspushed?

Piggywaspushed · 28/07/2019 10:38

Enjoy isn't really a DS emotion but he seemed satisfied. I can recommend the English sparkling wine we had earlier in the day which was really nice!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/07/2019 10:42

Well it's a rite of passage that DS has yet to undertake despite being a theoretical adult of some months'!!!

I've heard some very good things about English sparkling wines recently, Piggy. They may come into their own, once BREXIT is a fait accompli.

They might do, although I'd imagine most of their workers are EU migrants! Who knows what the jeff is going on!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 28/07/2019 13:25

We are on holiday in Malta at the moment. Putting thoughts of results day aside.

We're all inclusive which has been a great way for dd to find out
That she doesn't like vodka. Or rum. Or brandy. Or lager.

She does, however, like the Sweetheart cocktail which is basically a baileys milkshake.

ZandathePanda · 28/07/2019 15:39

We’ve just booked a few days in Europe. We are practising ‘Canadian’ accents to avoid embarrassing talk of Johnson and Brexit.

Question about resumption dates - DS’s Unis show expected date of resumption eg 23rd of September, however DH has asked what about registration dates? he thinks the 23rd is the date lectures are meant to start and registration will be at least a week before the resumption date stated on his offers. Does anyone with older dc know how this works?

MarchingFrogs · 29/07/2019 13:25

DD has an unconditional at Birmingham and having sorted out her accommodation for her last week (she went off to be totally incommunicado for 24 days on Sunday, expires-in-4-days-offer popped onto her inbox Monday lunchtime. Naturally.), I know that moving in day for her is the 21st. The university website says that term is from September 30th to December 13th.

Mustbetimeforachange · 29/07/2019 13:27

They usually have "freshers' week" beforehand, but it will vary. Google "x university freshers' week" or look on the students' union website for that university. I've never heard the term "resumption date". Registration usually takes place during freshers' week & then lectures start the week after, but I imagine it's not all places (I only have experience of 2, both "newer" universities).

Mustbetimeforachange · 29/07/2019 13:31

As an example, i've just googled "Southampton university term dates" and the answer was Freshers' : 26 September, term starts 1st October. In the same google search, Solent university came up as 16th & 23rd September. Where there are 2 universities in a town, they tend to have different dates to avoid traffic chaos, with the newer universities usually starting a week or so before the more traditional ones.

LIZS · 29/07/2019 13:32

If you look at the SU for the uni it should have a programme for Freshers' week.

Shimy · 29/07/2019 13:59

Thanks all. It seems registration/enrolment date is what’s on ds’s offer already. Thanks for explaining registration takes place at the same time as freshers week.

How is everyone getting on with collecting bottom drawer items etc... I've eased off a bit - possibly in denial about the one way money flow that's going to be taking place very shortly.

Anyone promised their DC rewards for getting their grades. We've not done so, but if he does get them, I feel some sort of positive stroke will be in order...

The newer universities' terms seem to be longer as indeed they used to be in their former poly days.

bottom drawer, sent him a link, nothing happened, mentioned it to him, still nothing. He is working a lot on his next day off will pin him down, we have to get going on this.

Ragwort · 29/07/2019 20:39

I’ve got loads ready for DS’s ‘bottom drawer’ collection, helps that I run a charity shop so have picked up loads of bargains. No doubt DS will sneer at them. I did a window featuring ‘off to Uni’ items which I was rather proud of (although not much sold, still got over 20 Ikea plates on display Grin).

Shimy · 29/07/2019 21:16

What is this “bottom drawer” collection that you speak of? I’ve bought an ironing board, that’s about it.

Anyone promised their DC rewards for getting their grades.
HELL NO! But intend to take him out on a Kobe,y day trip or weekend away if he does well Smile.

Shimy · 29/07/2019 21:18

“Kobe,y?” Pls ignore.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 29/07/2019 21:18

We've got nothing yet for bottom drawer. Apart.from a new duvet cover she wanted anyway.
She can raid our cupboards when she knows what she needs in whichever halls she will be allocated. Then I will buy new for us.

Mustbetimeforachange · 29/07/2019 21:26

Nothing bought here but still chuckling about shimy's ironing board. It depends on whether DS gets his first choice or insurance (catered or not), so not thought about getting stuff yet. We have plates & stuff in the loft.
PS the flats in halls usually have ironing boards (never used!).

Shimy · 29/07/2019 21:53

if he doesn’t get the grades he needs, i’m going to whack him with the ironing board! I think that’s the idea.

Mustbetimeforachange · 29/07/2019 22:01

Ah, now I understand! Grin

errorofjudgement · 29/07/2019 22:26

Hmm, in DS experience the ironing board was used to “ski” down the stairs - and yes before anyone asks they did go out the next day and replace it with a new one!

Itscoldouthere · 30/07/2019 07:46

@MarchingFrogs are you saying that your DC has already been offered accommodation at Birmingham?
DS2 has a conditional offer, but hasn’t mentioned being offered accommodation yet?
DS1 is going to Bournemouth Arts and he’s had his accommodation sorted for about a month, so I was wondering when we would hear from Birmingham.
Does anyone know if their insurance places offers accommodation as well? Or do they wait until after results day?
