Lots of wise words on here - I’m finding this such a lovely supportive thread. A broad mix of posters too which is so much more helpful than a narrow mix of parents all from the same school and all fiercely competing. Still got everything crossed for all your DCs for August 15.

"A broad mix of posters too which is so much more helpful than a narrow mix of parents all from the same school and all fiercely competing"

I agree. Some university threads are very snobby, and unless your DC are going to one of the top 5 universities you might as well not bother joining in.

Itscoldouthere · 17/07/2019 12:01

Yes I agree with the previous posts, I’ve found this thread most helpful and friendly.

I’m liking the sound of the insurance offering an unconditional, the though of clearing is really stressful. Of course I’m now worried the DS will not get the grades (having not got them last year) but I think he’d just give up if he doesn’t get into his insurance, an unconditional would be so reassuring as I really don’t know what he’d do if he doesn’t get in, he has no plan B !

errorofjudgement · 17/07/2019 13:51

This thread is really so supportive, despite DD not applying to uni I’ve felt very welcome on this thread.

DD is in town this afternoon touting her CV in the hope of some part time work. I have to say it’s filled with enthusiasm, but very little experience!!

TapasForTwo · 17/07/2019 14:40

I found that to be the case on another thread when DD decided to take a gap year error. She is going this year so I am bouncing between this year's A level DC and last year's. They are all lovely as well.

Just heard from Chichester confirming his place. Phew! Looks like his Btec results were right and he did get over their offer. The DSA assessment went well too so now just waiting on accommodation. He is being left on his own for a week cos he doesn't want to come on holiday with us...sad but hey ho. Hopefully my house may still be standing!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/07/2019 16:31

Flyingarcher well done to your DS. Am I right in thinking he's doing drama or a performing arts degree? Fingers crossed re accommodation. It's great when they can start to plan for starting at university.

Thank you. Yes, he is off to Act! Somewhat selfishly it means I now don't have to be around for the official results day. Best of luck to those waiting for results.

errorofjudgement · 18/07/2019 18:39

@FlyingArcher - congratulations to your DS, Chichester seems to have a real focus on PA courses. What a great result!!

Flyingarcher · 18/07/2019 20:34

Yes, they were really impressive on open day. It was between them and my old gaff, Chester but Chichester is much nearer home so he is hoping to keep his weekend jobs here as the pay is so good. I'm chuffed he got a Distinction for his PA course. He isn't naturally academic but got the 112 UCAS points and after some disastrous GCSE results ( falls to bits in exams - any exam) he's done really well and doing sixth form over three years has helped his maturity, I think.

Piggywaspushed · 19/07/2019 12:18

DS just failed his theory test again. He has had a clear month to revise. I just do not know what is going on with him. Angry

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/07/2019 12:36

Sorry to hear that Piggy. Is he just failing by one or two questions? Is his trajectory upwards? He will get there in the end but expensive having to keep resitting it.

Speaking of having a clear month to revise, it's now less time to wait for Results Day than it is since DS (and many others) finished their exams five weeks ago...

Piggywaspushed · 19/07/2019 12:57

The other times he narrowly failed (last time by two marks). Today he got 35/50...

justasking111 · 19/07/2019 13:21

DS did the mock driving tests on Wednesday night kept getting 100% took the test again yesterday passed but with wrong answers. I honestly think it is nerves.

Shimy · 19/07/2019 14:24

Ditto here re: Thread being supportive. It’s only the only educational thread on MN I’ve been on where state and private school parents are not at each other’s throats. That in itself is record! No snippy remarks, no condescending attitudes, no snobbery,( well I think some tried but were very swiftly put back in their box) just an all round pleasant atmosphere.

@Piggywaspushed Sorry to hear about that ☹️ Just rebook it again, the key is not giving up.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/07/2019 16:12

Oh dear, Piggy. Maybe he's just tired and not motivated at the moment? I am amazed at just how much DS is sleeping (and this from the 'child' who has always been a lark rather than an owl). Are you hoping he will take a car up to university?

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 19/07/2019 17:01

No, not hoping that (nor paying for it!). It's just a life skill isn't it, driving? He will have to sort this one out for himself at a point when he feels ready , I guess. It's Shanks's Pony and public transport for him!

Piggywaspushed · 19/07/2019 17:03

Although (I am not surprised to hear...) he was in a bit of a flap today by the time they got to the test centre because DH got lost, DS couldn't remember how to get there , they were a bit late and a row ensued. Hmmm...

Baytreemum · 19/07/2019 17:19

Piggywaspushed - my DD failed first time but passed 2nd time after going through every single question on the app twice! Then she got 100%!!!!! Soul- destroying, but effective!

Piggywaspushed · 19/07/2019 17:24

This was his 4th time baytree...

He must have gone thought that app a hundred times...

He believes he would do better without multiple choice and he may have a point.

TapasForTwo · 19/07/2019 18:24

Commiserations to your DS Piggy

minesawine · 19/07/2019 18:41

My DS has his actual driving test on results day so hopefully a double celebration. Is the driving test generally easier than the theory test. DS was told it is but I am not sure. Any views?

Baytreemum · 19/07/2019 19:05

Oh dear piggy - poor you! Those multiple choice are awful tho' and some of the questions are weird. I asked my dd- she said "you just have to learn all the answers from the app questions" as those in the test are the same - sounds a lot to me but I suppose if that's what it takes? She also said she read the dvla book to back up this app. She said "has he got the paid app?"- costs £4.99 apparently, and learn all the braking distances...... Just a slog, I think.

Piggywaspushed · 19/07/2019 19:57

Yes we do have the ap but thanks for the tip about learning the answers!

Flyingarcher · 19/07/2019 19:58

Son took four goes to get his theory. He passed his practical first time. Some of the questions are completely random and not in the highway code. Oh, and they love trams..
