Starting uni 2017 continued.
Tales of radiators, errant boilers, tomatoes and potato mashers...oh and university students.

We packed up DD's house yesterday and they cleaned all day today. Unfortunately we couldn't give them a lift home, because the car is too full. We'll get them from the station later.

I'm not sure where we're going to put everything at home!

Horsemad · 17/06/2019 22:06

DS2 home, complete with a tonne of washing!

Everything has been shoved in the garage for now. 😀

SMaCM · 17/06/2019 23:10

I have done 8 loads of washing since yesterday. DD is doing all the sorting, tidying, putting away, etc.

Xenia · 19/06/2019 17:19

We are all away on holiday together. There seems to be a stream of student friends wanting to stay at my house this summer. One boy wanted to come the night we arrive home but has been put off until the next day as we get back late.

We will have a lot of washing like others above on the thread once we get home although one son is getting a flight home earlier in the day on the day we leave to drive to an over night party.

Needmoresleep · 19/06/2019 17:43

Still a day of term to go!

It looks as if she can leave stuff in her new flat before the tenancy starts. Otherwise she has been offered 4 days garage space in a friends aunts garage. Hopefully nothing, especially washing, comes home.

All we need now is for England to beat Japan tonight and come top of their group, as we have tickets to see the group winner. It should be quite a match.

Horsemad · 19/06/2019 17:47

Still wading through the washing mountain here 🙄

On the upside, DS did ok in the awful exam, far better than he thought, so no resits, yeaay!

latedecember1963 · 20/06/2019 10:00

Good to hear the DCs are wending their way home and that so far the exam results are not messing up summer plans.
I've not had a call for work today so I'm going to move the desk out of DS2's room into his brother's old room. This will give him more storage space to leave all his things for the next 12 months.
If his room is filled it should deter my mum who I suspect is eyeing it up as a possible option for her. She rents so only has to give a month's notice and she's taken to giving me random possessions to look after recently. DH suspects she's trying to move in by stealth. Much as I love her, I couldn't cope with her moving in!
Good news about the match result, Needmoresleep! ⚽️

ErrolTheDragon · 20/06/2019 13:13

We got photos on Sunday of DD and crew mates cheerfully sinking slowly into the Cam.Grin. She's having a nice time - punting planned, going to a play (one of her housemates does theatre studies English), that kind of thing. Not sure when she gets her exam results, may be when she's at home

Malbecfan · 20/06/2019 16:45

Mine got hers today Errol and her text said "I'm a bit confused. It says Class I. I think it's a first but I'm not sure." She works hard, is good at passing exams, but common sense is not her strong point. She won 3 races but rowed over in the 4th so didn't get blades or whatever it's called.

DH has loaded the car, set off before hearing any results and is currently on the M3 heading for the A303 with all her stuff. She's heading for Heathrow on Saturday so we'll see her on her return.

DD2 has finished her A levels, so just a leavers' assembly to get through next week and her prom. She's back working this weekend and doing some babysitting tonight. I wish the end of term would hurry up for me!

bigTillyMint · 21/06/2019 07:59

Congrats to all those with their good results- no idea if DD has hers as she is currently travelling. Had a few hours on a drip a couple of days ago because of D&V but seems a lot better now and they are cracking on with their itinerary!

Eve · 21/06/2019 09:15

DS had final exam yesterday, 10th July before results are out.

He has a day to clean his house then a week til his placement starts.

latedecember1963 · 21/06/2019 18:33

DS2 was supposed to get his results by 5pm today.
Text from him just before 5 to say he was still waiting, along with some of his cohort. They've now been told they should get them on Monday.
I was supposed to be driving to him tomorrow and then I was going to drive him and his things home on Sunday.
Plan B is that I will go on Tuesday as my work has already asked me to work all day Monday instead of Mon and Tues afternoons next week.
It means driving there and back in 1 day before being back in work on Weds but needs must.
He's still going to go out celebrating with the friends from other subjects who have got their results.

Haffdonga · 21/06/2019 19:13

Bit of gloom and doom here. We've just got back from a really good last ever family holiday to find both our cars are dead (one flat battery and second spluttering and smoking). DS2 starts his new term next week and has been told his placement is in the hospital nobody wants to go to (reputation for being disorganised and nightmare travelling) plus the room he is moving in to is not available because the bathroom above leaks into it.

To cap it all, ds1 got the results of his masters today. He is 0.6% off a first and has a 2(i). We all know a two one is excellent but he is completely gutted. Sad

SMaCM · 21/06/2019 21:28

So sorry for those waiting for results, or not getting the results they wanted. Hope the cars are OK,

DD is trying to convince us that Love Island is good TV. Personally I think it is slightly concerning!

Haffdonga · 21/06/2019 21:35

SMacM - don't dismiss it. We had some very interesting debates about Love Island with an academic psychotherapist on holiday. All human life is exposed in the one trashy soft porn show.

RedHelenB · 22/06/2019 08:21

Horsemad - great that theres no resits needed.

Feel a bit jealous of you all getting your children back but I've got to wait another 3 or possibly 4 weeks if assessments need to be redone ( fingers crossed shes not failed any yet) And dd2 is still away so the house feels very empty!

RedHelenB · 22/06/2019 08:24

Hafdonga cant believe that both cars broke down! Your ds1 has done brilliantly what's he going to do now?

I'm sure ds2 will be fine. What some people hate others thrive on.

bigTillyMint · 22/06/2019 09:49

Eeek re cars - hope they are easily sorted. And how frustrating re 0.6% - probably would have been better not to know how close he was?

I would be really interested in the academic psychotherapists take on the LI contestants BlushGrin

Horsemad · 22/06/2019 09:54

Thanks RedHelenB, we're very relieved for him, as he was so despondent after that exam.

Not too long now until your DD is home again, I'm sure she'll do well in her assessments.

Haff, great result for your DS1 but I can imagine his disappointment.
What a pain re your cars ☹️ I remember when ours broke down the day we were taking DS to uni! God, that was a stressful day!! 😆

Haffdonga · 22/06/2019 16:39

Thanks for the kind thoughts for the missed first!

DS1 is focusing his energies on reading all the uni small print on how to get a certain module of his Masters remarked or his grade reconsidered. Frustratingly for him, his grade is so borderline that it's in the 'automatic reconsideration' zone except for the people who spent a year abroad which he did.

Unlike A levels you can't just pay for a remark or to see exam scripts and the uni says there are categorically no appeals unless you have documentary evidence of an admin error or grounds for special dispensation. It is very clear that you can't ask for a remark just because you think you should have done better. Even more annoyingly he felt his grades from Australia were arbitrarily and unfairly converted into the UK equivalent at a lower level than they should have been but at the time he couldn't be bothered to argue as it 'didn't matter' and he spent 6 months of the second year with the after effects of glandular fever but again didn't report to the uni - all much too late to argue about now but either of those could have given him his extra 1%.

Moral of this sorry tale: if your dcs have an illness, tough time or feel their marks are wrong in any module however small for any reason and at any time through their course then get them to report to uni and have it on record. That tiny percentage might just make all the difference.

ono40 · 22/06/2019 21:42

Hello all - what have I missed in my absence? I have been head down writing my assignments for my doctorate so haven't had the chance to pop in as frequently. DS came home last week, showing no signs of getting a job for the summer as he says he needs to learn how to write and read Mandarin so he can read documents for his dissertation. Can't help thinking he's making life hard for himself!

ErrolTheDragon · 23/06/2019 22:29

Learning to read Mandarin well enough to read documents for a dissertation sounds, um, shall we say ambitious?

DH will be picking up DD next weekend - as she had a 39 week contract she's making the most of it! The college is letting her leave stuff in the room she's renting over the summer (and also can leave her bike)which is good, DH can use his car not need mine, and it will make it easier when I take her back for her summer job which starts mid July.

latedecember1963 · 24/06/2019 16:49

Hope your son is feeling a bit better now the dust has settled, Haffdonga, and that your cars are sorted out. What an end to your holiday!
DS2 has got his results today so I shall be heading down the M6 tomorrow morning. I think he's ready to come home and sleep.

Horsemad · 25/06/2019 07:24

DS has done nothing but sleep since he got home!

Hoping he comes out of hibernation soon 🙂

SMaCM · 25/06/2019 17:38

DD has been getting up around midday and seems to be starving at around midnight 🤣.
