Fantastic news sergeantmajormum, so pleased for you all x

Monkey2001 · 26/03/2019 20:10

Really pleased for you sergeantmajormum. A bit of a celebration and then time to focus on the grades?!

Congratulations sergentmajormum..what a relief it must be , well done to your Dd.

One our very close friends Dd has had all 4 rejections... she is really passionate about medicine and has always wanted to do it...
There is absolutely no difference between her and my Dd ... it just seems so unfair to me as Dd decided on medicine quite late!!

hoodiemum · 26/03/2019 21:03

I'm so pleased for her, Sergeant. Lovely news!

Weaverspin · 26/03/2019 22:33

That's such wonderful news for your DD, Sergeant! Congrats :)

sergeantmajormum · 26/03/2019 23:11

Thank you all for your kind wishes. Her birthday is imminent so there will be wine.....then it’s head down for those grades! This thread has kept me sane so far, really appreciate all the shared info and tips. Lots of luck to all your DC as they face what is hopefully the last lap of this journey.

sluj · 27/03/2019 07:20

Or the first step of the next part Wink.
DS has yet another OSCE exam today. He is a 3rd year and just about ready for his Half Way Ball whilst his non medic mates are applying for jobs and getting ready for finals. The slog has only just begun Grin

mimiasovitch · 27/03/2019 08:59

Some lovely news on this thread. I can't say I'm looking forward to the next few months though. Dd is already working really hard, but is looking a bit burnt out. Easter break is on the horizon, so at least she'll get a bit of extra sleep. Dd2 has her GCSEs coming up too, but getting her to study is a far more difficult thing. Unless it's in eyebrow science.

Tinkobell · 27/03/2019 12:23

Hey well done and congrats @sergeant! That's a real lift! 😁

bengalcat · 27/03/2019 12:27

Prof Layton sorry about DD’s friend - reapply next year is my advice

Nightowlpossibly · 27/03/2019 13:20

Sergentmajormum--- congratulations to your DD on her offer. Wonderful news, and in time for her birthday, enjoy that wine!

Oneteen--- well remembered! Yes she had to keep taking tests until she got a consistent A grade was tough at time as also revising for mocks, but was worth her pushing it as she now has the offers. Chemistry is still her weakest subject, but she has improved a lot over the last few months. And is cautiously optimisic.

Monkey2001--- Totally agree with you about the grades And choices. DD is aware, and will only pick one higher offer. Not sure there will be any leeway on the higher offer . But she thinks there might be on the lower one if only one grade slipped.

Hostess--- I can't believe you are still waiting for kings, my DD interviewed in december, . And heard back pretty quickly. I hope you hear from them very soon with some good news, would Kings be one of her choices?

Mimiasovitch--- I feel the same as you, dreading the next couple of months, my DD also seems a little stressed already, Easter break will be the start of serious revision.

Wishing continuing good luck to everyone's dcs as they make their choices, and start their revision.

HostessTrolley · 27/03/2019 16:30

nightowl - I know! 16 weeks since the interview now.

I think she’s hoping for a kings offer to put as insurance as it’s nearer the boyf 🙄. I think she should insure Sheffield as they seem more welcoming and engaging and the course sounds fabulous - and the grade requirement is lower. Plus there’s a direct train to oxford so the difference won’t be that much. She’s planning to firm imperial.

HostessTrolley · 27/03/2019 16:33

Other friend who was on hold for imperial got a rejection today too. She’s not worried as she has three other offers, but of the three that were originally on hold, one now has an offer and two have received rejections

rbsk12 · 27/03/2019 19:36

Well done to your DD @Sergeant. The next couple of months are certainly going to be busy. DS finally heard from Nottingham this evening and unfortunately it was a rejection. He's a little disgruntled that it took nearly four months since his interview for them to finally make a decision but I think he's also relieved that the UCAS application is now done! He has three offers and can now choose his firm and insurance.
Good Luck to all those still waiting for decisions...

Nightowlpossibly · 28/03/2019 00:25

Hostess- good luck for kings of it is what your DD wants. I assume imperial and kings would both be higher offers? Is that risky? Is your DD confident
About getting the grades? Think I agree with you about insuring sheffield. I am assuming the boyfriend is at/going to oxford? So she feels London ones are nearer to him?

It would appear that most of the dcs have their offers and some are ready to firm. Anyone's dc waiting for offer holder days before making a decision? Can't quite believe
We are at this point! The UCAS deadline seems so long ago now.

It would seem a lot of Dcs ready to firm their choices. My DD waiting to do offer holder days as cannot decide.

Nightowlpossibly · 28/03/2019 00:28

Oops! Pressed post to soon!

HostessTrolley · 28/03/2019 10:17

@nightowl

Imperial AAA with the A to be chem or bio. Imperial was her ‘dream shot’, she sat the BMAT specifically to apply having loved the open day, thinking she wouldn’t stand a chance. Originally her top choices were kings and Nottingham.

Kings AAA with the A subject not specified - and she might well be rejected yet as not heard back

Sheffield AAA, will accept A*AB and have been known to accept AAB but not guaranteed, especially as an insurance choice. Felt a bit ambivalent about Sheffield until offer holder day which completely changed her view.

Also has offer for AAA Nottingham/Lincoln but is planning to decline due to prosection, location and having preferred offers already.

Boyf unlikely to not go to oxford as offer grades well below both predicted and mock grades and his other offers want higher grades. She’s realistic that both are aiming for high pressure courses and at their age things change. She also has a medical history that makes easy contact with home a good idea, which is another plus for London.

Fairly confident of achieving grades for imperial but concerned about possibility of A maths and A’s for sciences. Confident of A maths, she did FM in year 12 but dropped down to single A level. Chemistry she tends to get As, but the occasional B - never an A yet! Has been doing a past paper a week since before Christmas and getting 83-90% on all. Biology is predicted A, and is usually A* or high A.

I’m saying to just insure Sheffield and withdraw from kings, as she knows that she’d be happy at Sheffield and it gives her more leeway on grades. She’s saying she wants to wait to hear from kings but doesn’t know what she’d do if she got an offer anyway! I think she’s a bit attached to kings as it was originally her top choice, rather than being a bit more objective.

I know there are worse quandaries to have x

Nightowlpossibly · 28/03/2019 13:19

Hostess--- sounds like you Dd is doing really well And is on course to get the grades. Similar to My DD , predicted A A A with the A for chemistry which is the subject we are most concerned about. Fairly confident about getting the other 2 which includes biology.

DD also did bmat to apply to UCL. Was a risk, as She had a very good ukcat score,
She did not do as well in bmat as she did in ukcat so we were concerned she might not get an interview for UCL but fortunately the risk paid off and she got her UCL offer.

Now she just need to decide, I Will be glad when it is all finally settled.

Tinkobell · 28/03/2019 21:39

DD's now firmed with Sheffield and UEA 😁 If she's happy, I'm happy. Congrats to those reaching their decisions and to others maybe still waiting. I'm not going partake in the grades speculation chat....if I do I'll probably jinx the whole thing!

Nightowlpossibly · 29/03/2019 00:16

That's great news tinkobell. You must be relieved the decision has now been made, and that she is happy with her choices.
She can get her head down now and focus on revision. No decisions here until after offer holder days in Easter hols.

chachagabor · 29/03/2019 07:45

@ladsmum and @tinkobell .... I’m late to the party here but dd firming on Sheffield here . Has 2 other offers but with higher grades so not sure of the logic in using those as insurance. Only the grades to get now ...

Monkey2001 · 29/03/2019 17:37

There are some interesting FOI responses which might help people to decide which to insure. You still have time to put in FOI requests to help DCs decide, you need to do it over the weekend to get results by 1st May, but it is amazingly easy to put the requests in.

Last year Newcastle accepted all offer holders who got AAB (www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/tom_davis)

Leicester and Kings have both been relaxed about missed grades.

My son got into med school with A*AB. The B was in chemistry.
Congratulations to all with offers.
Commiserations to those without. With only a finite number of places available many young people miss out on a place when they probably have the potential.

HostessTrolley · 29/03/2019 21:41

Congrats to those whose kids have pressed the buttons and firmed 😎

Will have a look at the FOI’s later - in the pub 😂

Had a message from Dd saying that kings have put her on the waiting list and will let her know by 2nd May. She’s thinking she’ll withdraw from kings, firm imperial and insure Sheffield as she wants to move forward and get down to the business of getting the grades

Pumpkintopf · 30/03/2019 23:47

For those asking about the Nottingham Lincoln pathway - they've had permission to build their bespoke new med school building-

thelincolnite.co.uk/2019/03/21m-university-of-lincoln-medical-school-given-go-ahead/

2019 starters will have teaching initially delivered in the Sarah Swift building I believe.
