Anyone still waiting to hear from Durham?

Just wondered if anyone else is waiting to hear from Durham for an offer for 2019 entry?

See that offer holder day bookings are now open and I understand college allocation has begun.

DS still waiting here, DS application went through in November.....does this mean a rejection will likely be on its way?

Am glad DT2 had a positive day Coleoptra!
FWIW DH believes there will be a review into admissions failings where they've happened and do believe the tour college view on no blacklisting!

KismetJayn · 04/04/2019 17:24

@coleoptera would DT2 be going on to masters level after this?
Because as he came home positive it might be a good idea to consider Oxbridge for Masters, and undergrad at Durham. That way at least he has a guaranteed place for his degree and a plan not to 'miss out' on Oxbridge. (That's what I'm planning if I miss my offer!)

PortusCale · 04/04/2019 19:12

That sounds like a good idea KisemetJayn - I'm sorry you didn't get an offer for Durham but am I right in thinking you have a Cambridge offer?

So glad your DT had a successful day at Durham Coleoptera and that he has an idea of his college, hopefully he'll get confirmation too.

In terms of a blacklist, my DS school said that this wouldn't happen if he were to reapply after results. Hope that is the case.

Durham do not blacklist. Absolutely certain of that.

TapasForTwo · 04/04/2019 20:15

I hope you don't mind another hijack, but some of the points here are so interesting, and I feel that they would make a useful contribution to this thread about the English not valuing education.

goodbyestranger · 04/04/2019 20:37

Maria DD2 lives with two McKinsey graduates whose careers are doing just fine, one (her best friend) read a science but the other read History - all are Oxford graduates but DD2 (very much not Mckinsey) is the only one with a postgrad qualification. I'm sorry to say that you do spout the most incredible amount of nonsense almost all of the time. My DC are entitled, through me, to EU passports if they wish as are very many young people whose grandparents came to the UK from Europe during the war years and they probably have a cliam to be more international than yourself, brought up in parochial Kent. Please do stop patronising the entire board.

goodbyestranger · 04/04/2019 20:38

Coleoptera I'm so glad to hear that DT2 seemed to like Durham. Please tell us more news of his day and - hopefully - his college allocation.

Justanothermile · 04/04/2019 20:44

Chuffed to hear DT had a positive experience coleoptera, he will be shattered by the end of tomorrow. At least he's got company for the last visit.

goodbyestranger · 04/04/2019 21:20

A claim not a cliam. I can't even begin to imagine doing Bristol then Durham then Warwick. I feel exhausted just thinking about it.

MariaNovella · 04/04/2019 22:35

Why do you think I was brought up in Kent, goodbyestranger? Confused

goodbyestranger · 04/04/2019 22:43

Simply because I was pretty sure that you'd said that previously Maria, but you can obviously correct me if I'm wrong. I think you've also told us which institution you went to for tertiary education and for which degree, which might explain your bias for marketing degrees from ex polys. Either way, my advice would be to stop being quite so patronising if you wish to engage positively on these threads.

ZandathePanda · 04/04/2019 22:57

McKinsey's fingerprints can be found at the scene of some of the most spectacular corporate and financial debacles of recent decades.

MariaNovella · 05/04/2019 09:06

You seem very confused and angry, goodbyestranger.

MariaNovella · 05/04/2019 09:09

Absolutely, Zanda. McKinsey got all sorts of miscellaneous young Oxbridge graduates in English and NatSci to pull apart the NHS, the BBC and various other huge national institutions in the late 1990s and early 2000s and we are now reaping the rewards...

goodbyestranger · 05/04/2019 09:12

I'm very much not confused Maria and I don't think anything on MN could possibly induce anger in me :) I just happen to think you patronise people from a rather weak position. Stating bullshit as fact does nothing to persuade those who are rather better informed and indeed arguably more cosmopolitan.

MariaNovella · 05/04/2019 09:22

I seem to recall you have lived your whole life in the U.K., goodbyestranger. Please correct me if I am wrong. I’ve lived/worked/studied in several countries, speak 5 languages, am qualified in three countries/systems and work with people from all over the world. My family lives all over the world and has done for generations.

I don’t ever use the word “cosmopolitan” myself, perhaps because as it makes me think of a late 20th century women’s magazine or perhaps a cocktail and I am not a consumer of either.

goodbyestranger · 05/04/2019 09:24

all sorts of miscellaneous young Oxbridge graduates in English and NatSci

What does this even mean?!

goodbyestranger · 05/04/2019 09:28

Ok well I'll have to correct you then Maria since I've lived for a number of years as an adult in a number of countries, am European and Scottish by birth, and also have family living all over the world. I was also talking rather more about lineage than simply living in Paris.

Ontopofthesunset · 05/04/2019 09:29

In general, it is helpful to acknowledge one's own inevitably limited perspective, rather than claiming that everything one says is absolutely the truth. We all have different experiences. Some of these are even contradictory. And it's always helpful to remember the old saw: On the internet, no one knows you're a dog.

goodbyestranger · 05/04/2019 09:32

Last question: do you actually need formal qualifications to be a 'strategy consultant'? Confused.

bengalcat · 05/04/2019 09:32

Coleoptera it’s good that DT2 is trotting around the universities . Hopefully it will help him decide where he’d be happy to be for around 6 months of the next 3 - 4 years .

goodbyestranger · 05/04/2019 09:33

Absolutely correct Ontopofthesunset.

MariaNovella · 05/04/2019 10:12

Well indeed, ontopofthesunset, which is why it is really ridiculous when posters start credentialism fights. N’est-ce pas, goodbyestranger? Wink

MariaNovella · 05/04/2019 10:16

Last question: do you actually need formal qualifications to be a 'strategy consultant'?

If you want to understand more about the credentials of strategy consultants, take a look at the websites of the Big Three (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) and ask your children and their friends.
