Anyone still waiting to hear from Durham?

Just wondered if anyone else is waiting to hear from Durham for an offer for 2019 entry?

See that offer holder day bookings are now open and I understand college allocation has begun.

DS still waiting here, DS application went through in November.....does this mean a rejection will likely be on its way?

I would ring them as my DS has got an offer from Durham, but it could depend on the course.

anniehm · 18/02/2019 18:39

Durham are the slowest I'm told, March is common.

bengalcat · 20/02/2019 12:59

Yes mine received an offer for Durham NatSci beginning Feb I think . One of her friends has had an offer for History/Economics so they’re both getting up at the crack of dawn and going up to an offer holder day in March to have a look around and check out the accommodation .

Malbecfan · 20/02/2019 15:51

Thanks bengalcat. Looks like DD won't be getting an offer then as she still hasn't heard anything for NatSci. It's really irritating that she got her form in early (late Sept) and every other place has interviewed her or made her an offer. There has been nothing whatsoever other than an acknowledgment from Durham.

If they don't want her, why not just put her out of her misery and tell her? At least that way she can make an informed decision. She just feels like she is in limbo (and is in a foul mood because the bibliography for her EP didn't save properly and she's having to redo it).

DD has just withdrawn to firm York. Fed up waiting and it was her ‘shot in the dark’ choice anyway. So 🍾 has been popped and she now knows where she’s going and can focus on the work. Was also worried that a rejection too close to exams would knock her confidence.

Witchend · 20/02/2019 19:22

I've another JB offer holder. She's going to one of the offer holder days at the end of March.

She tells me loads of people haven't heard, and it was the same last year too. It does by no means mean that you will get a rejection.

However I suspect you are less likely to get your first choice college. (no knowledge there, but guessing) Apparently for college allocation they give each college an allowance for each subject and go down the list of offer holders. If your choice has space in that subject you get it, if not you get randomly allocated a different one.

Malbecfan · 22/02/2019 13:01

DD emailed them and they replied to say that she would hear by the end of March. She is now wondering which will come first, that or Brexit...?

ifonly4 · 22/02/2019 15:21

Durham requirements are achievable but it's DD's most aspirational course. She's still waiting on Warwick as well, but this morning said she's not going to Durham. I think as she didn't have a favourite and has had three months with other fantastic offers to consider that's what she's focussed on. Luckily she doesn't seem in a rush to make that final decision although does seem to have a firm and insurance in mind.

RedHelenB · 22/02/2019 17:25

Dd got an AAA offer for History back in December and her first choice accommodation so is off to offer holder days for there and Liverpool and will then decide whether Durham is for her .

BigGreenOlives · 22/02/2019 18:41

@Scabetty DD heard from Edinburgh today, same offer as Durham.

Scabetty · 22/02/2019 19:10

BigGreenOlives, dd heard today too and offer is also same as Durham. Durham is her firm and looks like Loughborough is insurance but she has to have a think she says.

I have seen your other thread Coleoptera and my friend's DD who did not get an Oxford offer for history got her Durham offer at A*AA on 16 January.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 26/02/2019 15:37

There's a thread on TSR about Durham offers which you may find useful, although it seems to be focused on Computer Science applicants specifically.

Amelie2505 · 27/02/2019 16:57

Just responding to your message Coleoptera. DS applied to Durham for History shortly after the Oxbridge deadline. He has an offer from Oxford but has heard nothing from Durham.

CBear99 · 28/02/2019 13:51

DD still waiting for History. Applied early October. It’s tortuous! Especially seeing lower offers on other threads - she’s an all A* candidate both achieved at GCSE and predicted at A level plus all the extra curricular needed for a very keen historian so I really don’t know why we’re still waiting! Is it our postcode!? We don’t live in the North East though my family is all from there. Wish they’d put her out of her misery as it’s doing nothing for her confidence. It’s shameful to do this to young people in the run up to major exams really. The exams are stressful enough.

OKBobble · 28/02/2019 21:18

Reading all this has made me rather glad that DS3 yr 12 who as an A* student who wants to read history at uni has already rejected Durham after the September open day as he found it too claustrophobic!

goodbyestranger · 28/02/2019 21:55

OkBobble it's obviously a pain if you're one of the high achievers who Durham doesn't notify until late in the cycle but plenty of applicants do hear earlier, and some hear much earlier. Your A DS may have felt Durham claustrophobic but plenty of A students don't. Durham is a massively popular choice and exceptionally well regarded for History in particular. (In fact I'm not quite sure what the relevance of A* student is in this conversation! But you introduced it so I'm following suit :)).

goodbyestranger · 28/02/2019 21:57

CBear99 I don't think Durham is intending to add stress but at this stage just waiting to see how many people firm and insure elsewhere to clear some space.

goodbyestranger · 01/03/2019 08:15

Durham is working with huge numbers. Total applications in 2016 were 28,696 (compared to Oxford 19,144/ Cambridge 16,750). For History there were 1441 applications (Oxford 857/ Cambridge 607).

OKBobble · 01/03/2019 08:36

The relevance being that it would be a genuine option for him (and one that generally people/his school would expect to be amongst his 5 choices because of predictions rather than aspirational) and also that I note that many Oxbridge applicants who didn't receive offers are in that group of people still waiting for offers even now in March with their applications having been in prior to 15 October.

I was in no way suggesting people who were waiting were not of Durham "calibre" and if that is what I have unwittingly implied I apologise. I was merely expressing my relief that we wouldn't be in this position next year because despite my personal desire that Durham would be a.good option DS has ruled it out .

goodbyestranger · 01/03/2019 09:06

That's perfectly fair. I think those of my DC who applied thought that it would be worth the wait, if there was one. The sheer scale of the numbers may help those waiting see the task Durham has on its hands.

ifonly4 · 01/03/2019 11:06

It makes you think though, if those who applied in October are still waiting, those who applied later could hear as late as April/May. DD is presently focused on firming/insuring two of her earlier offer.

BigGreenOlives · 01/03/2019 18:30

I heard today that another student is still waiting to hear from Durham for history

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 01/03/2019 19:04

Is history a subject that Durham is renowned for? Is that why there are so many applications and why it's taking so long to process them?
