Anyone still waiting to hear from Durham?

Just wondered if anyone else is waiting to hear from Durham for an offer for 2019 entry?

See that offer holder day bookings are now open and I understand college allocation has begun.

DS still waiting here, DS application went through in November.....does this mean a rejection will likely be on its way?

Portus If you care to read your own thread you will see that another poster talked about the human equivalent to Louis Vuitton bags. The point I was making, which I absolutely stand by, is that I am worried about them standing out.

MariaNovella · 22/03/2019 15:09

If you are worried about your DC standing out because he is wearing trackies, you are judging him.

Wouldn’t it just be easier to wear something very neutral, like a clean pair of jeans?

PortusCale · 22/03/2019 15:14

If you really think your DS and his friend will be “surrounded by the human equivalent of LV handbags” then I’m pleased you’re going with them. Hopefully you’ll get to see the reality of the situation. Trakkies and allWink

Bowchicawowow · 22/03/2019 15:15

I only worry about it because of what I have read on here.

MariaNovella · 22/03/2019 15:21

Here is quite a good place to garner a variety of opinions and take a decision that minimises risk and maximises opportunity based on those opinions.

goodbyestranger · 22/03/2019 15:35

Well stop worrying and just get the boys to stick on some jeans.

Bowchicawowow · 22/03/2019 15:41

I can do that with my own DS but I’m not sure the friend would appreciate or listen to my advice. Seriously the whole thing is not a big deal. If they feel like they stick out and they care about it they will change their habits. They have to learn these things themselves rather be told by their mother what to wear.

goodbyestranger · 22/03/2019 15:50

Yes I'm surprised they need their mother to suggest what to wear. I'm actually surprised it's even been discussed in your house as a thing, since it's so minor.

Bowchicawowow · 22/03/2019 15:57

It hasn't been discussed in my house goodbyestranger. It probably won't be either because as I have said, it's up to them what they wear at this age.

NotWhatWhat · 22/03/2019 16:00

Grrr it's so annoying that so many of the Higher Ed thread are so argumentative and pompous when they can so amazingly supportive and informative at other times. I've had advice on here that has actually ended up influencing where my kids have chosen to go to Uni!

It's such a shame when the threads end up getting sidetracked by pointless crap. The wearing or not wearing of trackies being a perfect example. 😂
I don't know why it keeps happening. It's not all the threads but it's a fair few.

Anyway OP, I really, really hope you son gets his offer. It's crazy that they have to wait so long. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

goodbyestranger · 22/03/2019 16:00

Well then, no need to worry as per 45 minutes ago :)

Bowchicawowow · 22/03/2019 16:02

All I said was I was worried how they would feel. For that, my DS and his friend have been accused on this thread of not being intelligent, trying to make a statement, not being streetwise and judging other people.

This is why I worry about their future.

goodbyestranger · 22/03/2019 16:08

Well you're on a hiding to nothing if you're worrying about their future. I'd strongly advise not thinking about it.

MariaNovella · 22/03/2019 16:40

Well stop worrying and just get the boys to stick on some jeans.

Indeed. Good straightforward advice from goodbystranger.

ZandathePanda · 22/03/2019 18:17

bowchic as I said before, I really hope your ds and friend go and look round Durham if they like the look of it. I tend to ignore certain posters now because they just try and be wind-up merchants which derail the thread by causing other more informed posters to leave. Durham seems to have some really interesting and different courses. Newcastle is a quick train ride away if it’s too quiet. For my experience of Durham, the lecturers won’t give too hoots about clothing but some prospective parents may.
And also factor in a longggg wait for an offer!

BigGreenOlives · 22/03/2019 18:26

Going back to the original purpose of this thread, my friend’s child has been offered a place for history & will insure with it.

Itwillallworkoutok · 22/03/2019 22:12

Your DC sound vile Maria.

i can't believe you would make a comment like that Bowchicawowwow. I think people on here are just trying to be helpful with their comments and you seem to just take everything the wrong way.

goodbyestranger · 22/03/2019 22:46

Zanda the Open Day in question is an Oxbridge one not a Durham one. I don't know why people can't be arsed to read posts these days.

Oneteen · 23/03/2019 00:40

@Biggreenolives - Hmmm I think your post is in bad taste :

Going back to the original purpose of this thread, my friend’s child has been offered a place for history & will insure with it

Perhaps Durham should have exploding offers (firm or go to the back of the queue) on courses that are heavily subscribed. Surely DC who want to really attend this Uni/ course should take priority over the DC who have it has a "fallback". I fully understand that this is the system BUT it seems totally unfair.

BigGreenOlives · 23/03/2019 04:42

Sorry, I didn’t mean to upset anyone, I thought that we were trying to update on info as we received it & their insuring will realistically release a place, if they were firming they’d be stopping someone else. Other children are still waiting to hear for their subjects, but I don’t know the precise courses they’ve applied for. There are other unis that have v high grade requirements.

BigGreenOlives · 23/03/2019 06:37

Oh & OneTeen, I first posted on this thread on 12/2 and about this particular course on 1/3, hence my now updating.

PortusCale · 23/03/2019 08:43

Well Track’s down for “essential maintenance” until Sunday, no doubt the last minute surge of offers and rejections from Durham has brought it to a standstill!

So the wait continues....at least we know why we’re not hearing anything for the next 24 hours or so.

CBear99 · 23/03/2019 08:49

Biggreenolives from what I've seen on this thread most DCs that are still waiting are waiting for History decisions - including my DD, although at her school English and Liberal Arts candidates are still waiting too - and that adds up to quite a lot of students in total.
Not offended by your comment at all - that's the system. But very frustrated with said system!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 23/03/2019 09:08

Surely DC who want to really attend this Uni/ course should take priority over the DC who have it has a "fallback". But how on earth does Durham know for whom the application is their number one choice or potentially just an insurance one?

Really don't like the idea of exploding offers - that just favours the sharp-elbowed which applying to university should not be about.

I think someone up thread suggested that the consideration of applications is clearly more nuanced for Durham than some of the other universities. Stellar academic results are clearly not all that they're looking at when decision-making. I wholeheartedly believe that being academic is about much more than that.

MarchingFrogs · 23/03/2019 10:35

But how on earth does Durham know for whom the application is their number one choice or potentially just an insurance one?

It doesn't, until the applicant decides on their firm and insurance. And allowing the (any) university to employ a firm us or sod off policy would of course mean missing out on those Oxbridge firmers, who were considered suitable for a place but who end up at Durham or wherever due to a bad day in their exams. I think someone said that Durham actually both wants and needs these students? Although they would still have the pick of those who also applied to Oxbridge, but who 'fell short of expectations' at the pre- or post-interview stage, for whom they are the next most desired option.

Thrre is also the issue that if one's only chance of a place was to make the university one's firm choice, more offers might be firmed, so fewer offers overall might be made. (But balancing this, the university would no longer have the opportunity to pick up replacements for missed 'firms' from a pool of 'insurances'. So, potentially a choice between accepting the dropped grades and participting in Clearing / Adjustment).
