Wow that last thread filled up quickly. Well done to your DS, Piggy!

Well done to your DD, errorofjudgement. I guess that's how casting goes in the real theatre world too?

It was always going to be the year it was easier to get on to most courses. Well they deserve some positive return for being the first year subjected to the new GCSE regime.

Danglingmod · 10/01/2019 07:27

Exactly, NewModel.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/01/2019 08:59

So basically some universities open their accommodation applications (much) sooner than others?

OP posts:
glitterbiscuits · 10/01/2019 09:48

I haven't even begun think worry about accommodation choices yet!

Offer holders day are my next thing. I want to go with DS. He's not keen....

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/01/2019 09:53

glitterbiscuits neither is my DS - I feel your pain. I've booked him onto the Durham one but was then horrified at the cost of the train fare (and whoever goes would need to stay overnight somewhere)

OP posts:
pasanda · 10/01/2019 10:39

Well, after finally finishing his PS on the second to last day of term HmmShock ds was a bit put out his application didn't actually get submitted until Sunday just gone!

I did try to explain that his teacher would be having a break over Xmas and his application wouldn't be her priority, particularly seeing as the school had an internal deadline of November 9th for finishing their ps's!!

So we now have to wait. I've no idea if he's even had any acknowledgements Confused. It's only after reading this thread I see this is what normally happens.

Can you tell I've got a lazy, uncommunicative boy on my hands!! 😡Grin

minesawine · 10/01/2019 10:51

It was always going to be the year it was easier to get on to most courses.
What does this mean? Why is it easier for them to get onto their course of choice. Great news, but why?

Laniakea · 10/01/2019 10:52

she called them ... they've given her interviews for both courses on Feb 2nd Grin Grin Grin many apologies for the delay (not quite sure what was going on but she said they were very nice) ... they've already followed up with emails & she's confirmed. Squeee!

pasanda · 10/01/2019 10:57

Grin Shimy

Great news for your dd Lan!

Shimy · 10/01/2019 10:58

Mines - Because there’s a lower birth rate for this cohort, meaning fewer applicants for uni places. I was told this by course heads at Cardiff and Sussex.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/01/2019 11:01

I think there are a fair few of those Shimy and pasanda. DS did tell me about his UIF offer from York of his own volition but have to say I'm disinclinded to believe he's communicating all universities' emails to me (particularly those for offer-holders open day visits!).

Well done to your DD, Laniakea, and fingers crossed for her.

  • I seriously doubt anyone can trump MY DS! It’s toworrying levels. I’ve asked him so many times if he really wants to go to university and he says yes, but his behaviour doesn’t match with that. He wanted to firm one offer from a uni that was asking for 2 levels above predicted (not working anywhere near predicted levels) anddidnt understand why this wasn’t a good idea. He’s misread an offer of AAB for Abb! he’s claimed he’s had no contact from Cardiff for an offer holder day (when lots of people on TSR are saying they have!) probably deleted it or something.
I’ve had to get his ucas track login details off him to double check the conditions of all his offers.

Sometimes i decide enough is enough and if he really wants to go to uni he’ll sorthimself out. But I don’t see this happening he just carries on sleeping. I’m green with envy all these parents talking about their dc sorting out holder day visits, comparing course content etc Envy.

Sorry rant over, I had to get that off My heaving chest!

Piggywaspushed · 10/01/2019 11:32

Ah, now shimy, I think you and my DS could have a competition for horizontal behaviour. Except they would be too passive and just make no eye contact with each other and mutter, Grin

Piggywaspushed · 10/01/2019 11:36

I have worked out my DS's gmail password. It's the only way I know ANYTHING. 723 unread emails .

Shimy · 10/01/2019 11:42

Piggy - You’ve got it! The muttering, no eye contact, always seemingly frowning and ALWAYS tired! But they’ve done nothing all day but sleep.
He’s naturally very quiete and introverted. I get that, but he just seems disengagedfrom life in general.

It’s so hard listening or reading about all these engaged young people, I can’t help thinking, ‘where did I go wrong?’ Sad.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/01/2019 12:17

Ha, I actually asked DS if I could look at his gmail emails "just to check" and he point blank refused me access (and he goes for very obscure pwords so no chance of me breaking it!).

It's also possible that applications to universities go down as more young people opt for apprenticeships. We have a super bright family member who chose that route and is flourishing!

OP posts:
Shimy · 10/01/2019 12:24

When i mentioned the possibility of "apprenticeships" and the benefit of "work and study" at the same time to DS, his eyes rolled almost completely into the back of his head.

No chance of hacking emails here either.

Piggywaspushed · 10/01/2019 13:04

For the last five years , applications from boys to study at university has declined. Apprenticeships have not risen in the same volume. The government and the education system are worried. Not doing anything of course! Just concerned!

glitterbiscuits · 10/01/2019 13:59

My DS is currently back in bed.
2 mock exams tomorrow and zero revision
This was a straight A student.
Now getting Cs and Ds. He thinks he will get it all done at the last minute in the summer and as the offers are in now he doesn't have to worry about the mocks.
" I work well under pressure "

ifonly4 · 10/01/2019 14:46

error - I bet you were so pleased and relieved for her.

Laniakea - that's great news.

NewModel - I'm half hoping DD doesn't get a Durham offer for that reason. She's at school in a different county and there are more trains from here, so if one of us goes with her then that's three days off work (DD needs to give plenty of notice, my job is likely to be a no for those dates!).

DD is waiting to hear from Durham. I wouldn't be surprised if they delay decisions for a while and see how many Oxbridge rejects accept an offer and how many places they've got left.

glitterbiscuits, funny you should mention grades. DD is forecast AAA, been getting Bs, As and the odd A* every half term, but last report it was all Bs and even a C. I wonder if some of the schools are trying to get them focussed by giving lower grades. Good luck for his mocks tomorrow.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/01/2019 14:47

So boys are falling off the 'grid', Piggy? It doesn't surprise me but it's not good news for sure.

OP posts:
pasanda · 10/01/2019 14:54

Glitter - my ds decided to take today off so he could 'catch up on some sleep and finish his history coursework '. Up at 11.30! Only been back at school 3 days, must be sooooo tired! Oh, actually, maybe it's something to do with that ready meal you ate at half past midnight last night!!

No revision yet for mocks which start next week. Says he has to finish coursework and get it off his mind before he could possibly focus on revision. Coursework not due in til May Confused

He has a plan, I'm letting him stick to it and keeping my fingers firmly crossed!

Other news tho, he's told me all 5 uni's have at least acknowledged his application Smile

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/01/2019 15:08

Pasanda are you sure you DS's school doesn't have an internal deadline for coursework? DS has to submit one history piece on Monday but at his school they do two and then submit the best one (and that will be at some point after the Easter hols I believe).

OP posts:
Shimy · 10/01/2019 15:19

Oh God! don't get me started on the mocks. All xmas hols spent sleeping. Mocks started this week.

No revision yet for mocks which start next week. Says he has to finish coursework and get it off his mind before he could possibly focus on revision. Coursework not due in til May

And its the sheer daft logic they apply to things as well?
in DS's case, "i'll firm offer X even though its really high above my predicted, but i know they will drop it" Hmm

"It doesn't matter if i complete my Computing coursework before school resumes, because the deadline is in March and everyone is at the same stage as me"Hmm

"It doesn't matter if i go to an offer holder day, i'll just go to an open day instead"

Seriously if i weren't his DM i'd question wether he's actually mine!
