New thread, I hope it's okay to start one.

Good luck today for those still waiting for interview news, which includes us.

Congratulations to those already with dates.

zxcv123 - I will also dicourage my DD from re-applying, I think. Her second choice is good enough (excellent, in fact) and there is no need to waste a year in hope of getting a place at Oxbridge.
My DD decided that she will go to school and not open her email during the day Shock and will do it when she gets home! I'll die in anticipation by the afternoon!

Couchpotato3 · 07/01/2019 12:50

Oh dear God, I can't cope if DS doesn't hear before school and refuses to look until he gets home. I don't think he'll have the self control to do that anyway, especially if friends have heard. Also, I think school will know so that will give the game away.

Couchpotato3 · 07/01/2019 12:51

We're going to need a new thread before long. Can some clever person do the necessary and add a link?

Lumpy76 · 07/01/2019 13:19

I’m getting really quite anxious about it now...dd failed driving test (3rd) last week (was very upset). It’ll be such a blow to her not to get an offer. Of course plenty of people do exceptionally well with no degree from Oxford (DH & DB included!!) but I know how she wants it and am really worried that this may affect her self confidence significantly - particularly as she felt the interviews went very well. Argh - get me out of January!!!!!

Puzzledmum · 07/01/2019 13:53

Couchpotato3 - I hope my DD decides to look in the morning. SHe feels that they will send the emails after 8am. I think it may also be earlier, but not sure. SHe probably will not look during the day, she is very self-disciplined like this Grin.
Lumpy76 - i sympathise for the driving test. It is such a stressful experience. My DD passed it last summer (second attempt) and has been driving since everywhere, including central London. It is such a relief once they pass it. I would recommend you to choose your test centre very carefully (according to the test routes). Some centres' routes are so hard, that it can take 5-6 attempts before you pass it.
I am really trying to big up the second choice uni at the moment, just in case Grin.
Good luck to all for Wednesday!

Rianna · 07/01/2019 14:47

Lumpy well done to your daughter even getting to do a test...mine isn’t ready after nearly a year :-). Don’t worry about that at all , hasn’t got anything to do with academic achievement. I will be very relieved when the wait is over.no way he’s reapplying , he will go to his ‘ back up ‘ choice ( already has offer ) if doesn’t get in.

Justanothermile · 07/01/2019 16:21

We are also going through the process of making sure Dd realising how well she's done to get this far and how proud we are of her as a person etc.

I don't think it would do much good for her self esteem to try again next year, she's desperate to get started at university anyway, so wouldn't want to wait.

After hardly speaking about it at all over the Christmas period, Dd did mention yesterday that whatever the outcome on Wednesday, it's a funny thing to think that this one day has an affect on her life.

We've had a chat about allowing the feelings of disappointment and upset to be processed as there's bound to be these emotions if the outcome is negative, but that as soon as she starts at her other choice (whichever one that turns out to be!), that will feel like the best choice anyway.

Lumpy Dd decided to not even try to learn to drive until after her A Levels so well done to yours for adding to her work load by learning this skill as well.

HingleMcCringleberry · 07/01/2019 18:29

Haha, Rianna! It’s all very well telling Lumpy76 not to worry about her child’s driving test, but she did say her kid was very upset. I think anyone would be justified in being a bit worried about the potential for two pieces of unsatisfactory news in the space of a week, of an academic nature or otherwise!

goodbyestranger · 07/01/2019 20:20

Best wishes for the Oxford applicants. For any anxious mothers who happen to be at home with a DC reluctant to open e-mails at school, those with offers will almost certainly also get a letter with financial info in it. Anything with more than a single sheet of paper is always good.

goodbyestranger · 07/01/2019 20:23

And if there are any Magdalen applicants out there, then if the college stays true to form, a single sheet in a small envelope can also presage good news.

goodbyestranger · 07/01/2019 20:25

And what the heck is Cambridge doing between now and the 14th? That's seems to be really spinning it out.

Lumpy76 · 07/01/2019 22:06

Thanks everyone! I think looking at test centres could be the way forward!! We do indeed live somewhere where there is an exceptionally AWFUL roundabout (M25 big A road junction - it’s pretty horrendous even for experienced drivers!)
Spoke to DD tonight re not getting an offer...reply was she’s not even thinking about it - she’s only thinking positive! She’s not my daughter!! I grew up with a DF who’s motto was “expect the worst and hope for the best” - unfortunately for me this became shortened in my mind to “expect the worst”... let’s hope it’s better than that!

horsemadmom · 08/01/2019 08:26

I can confirm that Magdalen acceptance is a single sheet of paper. Every College seemed to send different sizes of envelopes and different amounts of content. You can't ell anything from what lands on the mat- you have to carefully steam it open and reseal it before DC gets home to know for sure. ;)

Rianna · 08/01/2019 08:34

I know, but maybe lumpy’s daughter would feel better knowing she’s not the only one !( daughter , right ?). Mine failed theory test just before the MAT which I thought was unfortunate timing as of course it isn’t the best thing for confidence.Anyway, nearly there.

zxcv123 · 08/01/2019 11:27

Does anyone know if the schools get the results before the pupils, like they do with A-levels?

Rianna · 08/01/2019 11:37

Zxcv Oxford will update the ucas site ‘early in the morning.’ I would expect that to be before school.

Lililili · 08/01/2019 11:44

Exactly Goodbyestranger! I am jealous of the Oxford lot finding out one way or the other tomorrow!

Baytreemum · 08/01/2019 12:14

Does anyone know if Cambridge send the envelopes to our home address or to school? Also, will school know before we do? Cambs told us that Track isn't updated until end January. Thanks.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/01/2019 14:35

Does anyone know if Cambridge send the envelopes to our home address or to school?

For DD it was home - but the letter from the college she'd applied to arrived after the email with the offer from the college she was pooled to. I got the impression most of the colleges used email (that was 2 years ago). Not sure the school was in the loop at all, I don't know why they would be.

A fat envelope with more info arrived from her college a bit later, iirc.

TheFrendo · 08/01/2019 15:08

For Cambridge I read that the decision will be communicated by email on the 14th no later than 5pm. A letter will be posted to offer holders later.

Baytreemum · 08/01/2019 15:47

Oh, just an email sometime during the day! Yikes!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 08/01/2019 17:42

Dd is expecting an email rather than a letter for Magdalene. It's going to be a long wait between tomorrow and Mon reading about those who have Oxford offers under their belts.

I have mixed feelings about whether I hope she has an offer or not. She failed her 2nd driving test just after new year so some good news would be good. But added pressure for those grades come results day.

Mocks this week.

Malbecfan · 08/01/2019 17:49

DD1 received her Cambridge offer by letter 2 years ago. It was a day off for me and I had strict instructions to open it and phone her. She was in a lesson but her teacher was a friend and colleague so it was ok for her to take the call.

I'm also not working next Monday morning. DD2 will no doubt check her phone if anything comes by email. If it comes by post, she has asked me to open it and let her know, but by text rather than a call.

Fingers crossed for good news for everyone tomorrow!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/01/2019 18:00

Good luck for people tomorrow.

Cambridge wise it depends on the college. dd had an email mid morning and then a letter arrived the next day.

I really feel for you all. Gin
