Here we go!

OP posts:

Hi "twosoups1972* I don't think it works like that. I would think you might find some take a more measured approach to making decisions about offers than others.

Needmoresleep · 14/12/2018 17:43

Two soups and others, it is worth noting that some oversubscribed courses will wait till after the January UCAS deadline before making significant numbers of offers.

A few years ago, but DS got caught out for economics, with UCL, LSE and Warwick all waiting till mid/late March before replying. Luckily one acceptance. And you only need one.

Parmaviolets13 · 14/12/2018 17:44

Well after my post I've been offered two interviews! Not quite offers but with midwifery it never would be. Hurrah!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/12/2018 18:11

Hi Parmaviolets13 that's good news.

To some extent it's as with all things a case of 'a watched pot never boils.'

I have a feeling that DS won't hear anything else before Christmas now (he also now has an offer from York).

twosoups1972 · 14/12/2018 18:17

Thank you all. Dd’s course is English Lit + Lang which I don’t think is a very popular course as far as I can see.

blametheparents · 14/12/2018 19:38

Evening!
Would love to join this thread.
DS sent his application in on Wednesday (at last!) - he’s applied for Economics at Nottingham, Exeter, Sheffield, Loughborough and Birmingham.
Nottingham would be his first choice if he got an offer from there - anyone got any news on that university? I wonder how long they take to respond.
I went to Birmingham so that probably pushes it down my DS’s list!
DS does IB and his predictions suggest he should be fine for any of the points offers that the universities he’s put down would offer. Fingers crossed!

Laniakea · 14/12/2018 20:04

congrats Piggy Grin so glad it's in!

5 weeks for dd now - still waiting for Southampton (one course the same as her predicted grades, one with lower grades), gloom is setting in. She's applied for deferred entry & Cardiff which was her second choice have changed the course she's applied to from 2020 onwards. The modules haven't been published but the grades have changed from AAB (she got an ABB offer) to BBB which makes us think it will be less science more geography. I think she's going to end up reapplying next year.

Working! Grin she needs to save enough money to be able to afford uni!

twosoups1972 · 15/12/2018 11:34

Does anyone know if you can withdraw an application once an offer has been made (if it’s within 14 days)?

LIZS · 15/12/2018 12:26

He should be able to firm the preferred offer now.

LIZS · 15/12/2018 12:27

Or do you mean withdraw the application completely?

twosoups1972 · 15/12/2018 12:54

Yes withdraw the application completely and replace with another institution.

LoniceraJaponica · 15/12/2018 13:00

I would like to know as well. DD wants to accept an offer but can't as she is still waiting for Manchester to come back to her.

Ontopofthesunset · 15/12/2018 13:04

I guess it doesn't really matter, as they are not going to withdraw the offer. Lots of people won't be able to make decisions yet as the deadline for application isn't even closed.

BringOnTheScience · 15/12/2018 13:56

@blametheparents Fellow IB parent here! DC1's applications are now in and refreshing emails daily.

blametheparents · 15/12/2018 14:00

@bringonthescience
Nice to meet another IB parent!
A great qualification, but tough!
Good luck with the applications - my DS is constantly refeshing his email too.

FrameyMcFrame · 15/12/2018 16:28

Hi Worriedunimum!

My DD Is also dyspraxic so I know something of your worries. We are trying to go for uni close to home but not in our home city.

My DD has been offered no adjustments for her condition, she has been offered the use of a laptop in the exam but no extra time. I don't understand why apart from that she is quite high achieving. I feel that I should go back to the send coordinator and check again.

worriedunimum · 15/12/2018 19:19

Yes definitely ask for assessment of her needs, Sendco can do DASH and CTTOP tests for handwriting and processing speed and then ask JQA for extra time and other reasonable adjustments in public exams. School can implement the adjustments for any lessons of internal assesments.

Piggywaspushed · 16/12/2018 06:57

The unis actually seem to be really good with previously unacknowledged or undiagnosed SEN. A girl I taught came to visit me the other week. She had always struggled to live up to her own high expectations at A Level (despite being phenomenally diligent) and her spelling was awful. I inherited her in sixthform and assumed she was dyslexic. Unfortunately, my school - like many- don't do dyslexia testing (another thing that disadvantages the lower income children as private testing costs £££s!).
She is now at SHU who are paying for her to have dyslexia testing and can then accommodate her needs in all sorts of ways. This could be life changing for this wonderful girl who felt her life was destroyed when her A Levl gardes weren't what she wanted.

On a side note, she loves SHU (she had not originally chosen it, but gt a clearing place) and says it is very supportive in lots of ways.

I supsect the highest ranking unis may be the least sympathetic and accommodating, sadly.

That's a terrible shame. Hope it all works out.

"I supsect the highest ranking unis may be the least sympathetic and accommodating, sadly."

That's worrying Piggy. I know there are league tables for universities, but there any kind of unofficial list of which universities have better pastoral care?

DD's friend was badly bullied by her flatmates recently. The university was brilliant and had her moved into a different flat the next day. It is a low ranking university, but I would like to think that any university would do the same.
