Here we go!

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 16/12/2018 10:36

I don't know that there is a list as such . The levels of suicide and drop out rates at some high ranking universities have certainly caused concern over the last few years but I am sure these are based on complex factors.

Danglingmod · 16/12/2018 10:41

Ds's Senco has told me many times about the two students with significant SEN who were at RG Uni A and struggled massively with lack of support who both switched to RG Uni B where the care was immensely superior (different years).

cantkeepawayforever · 16/12/2018 10:46

Anecdotally (and perhaps against the 'lower ranked institutions are better at pastoral care' theory) Oxbridge - due to their collegiate structure - can be very good at pastoral care BUT the nature of their student body and the particular intensity of the experience can mean that there are higher levels of particular issues / SEN than in the 'general student population'.

cantkeepawayforever · 16/12/2018 10:48

(I was at Oxbridge in the Dark Ages, but even then - when diagnosis / acceptability of declaring MH issues was perhaps less common - the levels of MH difficulties, HFA and also eating disorders were relatively high)

AtiaoftheJulii · 16/12/2018 12:48

Afaik Oxbridge dropout rates are well below the national average. Have no personal experience of how unis handle MH issues, but dd1 has had an 'educational' (i.e. no meds!) diagnosis of ADHD whilst at Oxford, and their provision has been really good imo - she has not used it fully, tbh, but that's not because the support hasn't been offered. Her college have also looked after her 'college son' who has Aspergers/HFA very well.

Piggywaspushed · 16/12/2018 13:35

It's not Oxbridge I mean. Am trying not to name the unis I have heard of as being bad for this stuff.

cantkeepawayforever · 16/12/2018 14:08

Bristol has been in the news for being very poor in this area.

FrameyMcFrame · 16/12/2018 16:53

Piggy is SHU Sheffield Hallam? DD's first choice is University of Sheffield so hope they're good for additional needs too.

Piggywaspushed · 16/12/2018 18:48

yup, Sheffield Hallam.

blametheparents · 17/12/2018 17:51

I presume offers etc will dry up for a bit now until after Xmas?
Has anybody got any experience of this?
Would be nice to get an offer before Xmas! An early Xmas present!

Scabetty · 17/12/2018 18:56

Dd has just now received an offer from Durham so think offers can come anytime. She already has an offer from Loughborough. Would dearly love Bath but over the moon with the two she has.

blametheparents · 17/12/2018 19:01

Well done to your DD.
Nottingham is top choice here - fingers crossed!

TheFrendo · 17/12/2018 19:38

Scabetty,

May I ask what subject the Durham offer is for? Son is waiting to hear from Durham for maths.

DeltaDelta · 17/12/2018 19:44

@Piggy rooting for you, hope ds hears good news soon.

Piggywaspushed · 17/12/2018 19:54

Thanks all for moral support : you keep me sane. UCAS website now says they are waiting for school. Not got faith in them sorting that out by the hols (Weds) but we'll see....

Scabetty · 17/12/2018 19:55

TheFrendo, offer is for Psychology.

TheFrendo · 17/12/2018 20:06

Thank you.

BringOnTheScience · 17/12/2018 20:46

First offer! They are definitely still processing the applications in the run up to the end of school terms.
Newcastle - 35 IB points, or 33 if Firm.
DC1 most relieved and now ready for Christmas Grin

DS got two offers in a matter of days of school sending in his application (a week ago) but nothing since...

RedHelenB · 18/12/2018 06:52

Piggywaspushed - my dd was assessed in 6th form college with "traits of dyskexia" a d has got extra time and use of a laptop in exams so it would be worth looking into for your school.as to what years can be done.

My other dd is doing dentistry at Newcastle and knows of a few students there who have been helped to uncover it too so not all RG unis are poor on this

Piggywaspushed · 18/12/2018 07:03

red I was referring to another poster. My DS has exam concessions at his school. :)

My own school (am a teacher) definitely does not do dyslexia testing, much to my frustration.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/12/2018 08:43

UCAS website now says they are waiting for school. Not got faith in them sorting that out by the hols (Weds) but we'll see.... Oh no, Piggy this is what happened with DS's application (and school sat on it for four days until I chivied them and then miraculously the Head of Sixth Form pressed 'send' almost immediately - funny that!). It's very frustrating to have nearly got there but now being delayed again. How is your DS feeling about it? Triple GRRRRR!

Piggywaspushed · 18/12/2018 10:39

I don't think DS either knows or cares.

He is more excited that (yet another) teacher is leaving.
