Here we go!

Well the person in charge of the ucas stuff has still not passed his personal statement. His physics teacher lost the form they fill in with predicted grades. Ds went to get another form, they have run out so just get some bits of paper filled in his form tutor suggested. I am in despair. Apparently the school send off the final product then bill us. I just feel at their mercy. He has an interview next month I could cry

ifonly4 · 22/11/2018 11:01

Congratulations on more offers.

LIZS - DD had her offer from Edinburgh 11 days after applying and hasn't had to complete a form. We're in England. One good thing is that you know they're processing it.

Ontopofthesunset - what's course has your son been offered? My DD is doing sustainable development and will probably take modules in politics, music and possibly geography/socialogy.

Piggywaspushed · 22/11/2018 13:56

madmum , how deos he have an interview if the form hasn't gone off?

Don't worry... it may not always feel like it on this forum, but honestly there are lots of schools dragging their heels as much, or more than, your DSs! Lots of DCs on theis forum have got through the UCAS process really early, for a host of reasons.

I myself am trying to be philosophical, despite also gnashing my teeth at my DS's school and its 'ways'.

bigTillyMint · 22/11/2018 15:21

DS got his No email from Oxford - seems relieved that it's decided and can just focus on the actual Alevels.
And footy, of course Grin

Don't worry... it may not always feel like it on this forum, but honestly there are lots of schools dragging their heels as much, or more than, your DSs! DS's for one. Still no progress here. His form tutor has lots of marking to do at the moment apparently. I think I'm going to take DS's personal statement in hand (suggesting where he needs to make amendments) and then submitting it for the reference to be done. GRRR

Piggywaspushed · 22/11/2018 16:12

newmodel, I am , too. I am an English teacher, for goodness' sake so fairly sure I can 'mark' it myself!

LIZS · 22/11/2018 16:55

This is getting odd now. Edinburgh have asked for proof of my and dh nationality( ie. Copies of Passports) and whether dd has lived outside of UK in EU.

Ontopofthesunset · 22/11/2018 16:58

Maybe because she was born abroad? How strange.

DS is applying for Modern Languages and Linguistics.

howabout · 22/11/2018 17:04

LIZS is she an EU National living in England? If so, I think she would come under Scottish funding rules rather than English. As such she would be subject to capped places. If she is a UK National, Scottish or English, living in England then she comes under English fee paying uncapped places. No idea what the situation is for dual Nationals, but I assume this is the source of the need for clarification.

LIZS · 22/11/2018 17:09

She is a British national but was born in EEA (lived in UK since 2005) . If they want waiver tuition fees that is fine by us but it just seems really strange! Degree is related to your dc's ontopofthesunset so presumably they are processing applications at the moment.

LIZS · 22/11/2018 17:20

dd has done some rooting around and it seems as if were either parent an EU national she might have been treated as a Scottish/EU applicant . Sadly we're not, so it will probably cost her £££.

FrameyMcFrame · 22/11/2018 18:09

Thanks everyone! She's applied for Italian and English lit joint honours. but courses all have different names at each place, at Leeds it's Languages and Cultures with English at Glasgow it's Comparative literature with Italian.
Glasgow andLeeds are equal favourites at the moment!

MarchingFrogs · 22/11/2018 19:20

at Leeds it's Languages and Cultures with English

DD is applying for Languages and Cultures (French), with International Relations. Leeds seems to be attracting applications from lots of her circle this year, some she would happily find herself sharing a flat with. Others, shall we say, not.

UAEMum · 22/11/2018 19:22

We are applying for entry into year 2. My son is in year 1 in a uk uni branch in dubai. Only applied 3 days ago and got an offer from Aston. The problem they seem to have made a mistake and offered him entry into year 1. So ive emailed. Hopefully they can change it.

FrameyMcFrame · 23/11/2018 07:53

Marchingfrogs excellent, the course seems really good. Has your DD submitted UCAS yet?

Piggywaspushed · 23/11/2018 08:35

DSs school are plainly still dragging their heels about writing his reference and predicting grades which is very frustrating. They now want to speak to him on Weds to seek his permission to mention his anxiety in the reference. he won't give it and I am farily cross that they wouldn't just mention it anyway (in passing; doesn't need to be a huge deal)

That aside, we are ready to go from our end. If we send it in, what happens if UCAS then request references and PGs from the school and they aren't ready to provide them? Does anyone know what sort of timeframe UCAS accept for that part?

The PG thing is particularly unacceptable imo. It illustrates perfectly the issues over poor DS having had 5 new teachers this academic year!

LIZS · 23/11/2018 09:04

I don't think the application goes live on ucas until those parts are completed.

Piggywaspushed · 23/11/2018 09:29

Mine doesn't have a space for references. We can submit and pay without them being attached... do you mean UCAS don't distribut it to unis until they ahve the refernces? That is my concern! How long do they allow schools to haver for??

minesawine · 23/11/2018 09:41

DS has finally chosen his uni's to study Economics and Business Management:

Loughborough
Nottingham Trent
Essex
Cardiff
East Anglia

A very wide ranging choice, but he based it on the course content so I am happy, and they all seem nice. Just sent it off to his school. Fingers, toes and everything else crossed.

Does anyone have knowledge of these universities?

Thanks

LIZS · 23/11/2018 09:41

Yes you submit and pay first, school is notified and add their sections. Afaik school would have until the mid January deadline.

VanCleefArpels · 23/11/2018 09:44

piggy the reason the school can’t mebtion your son’s anxiety is that info about medical matters is “special category information” under GDPR and so requires explicit consent (;as opposed to using a “legitimate interest” reason to use info which only needs generalised consent)

Piggywaspushed · 23/11/2018 10:19

I see vancleef. GDPR and I are not friends, for a range of reasons!

So... if the school had until mid Jan to complete a reference, even if DS submitted application , say, Monday, he wouldn't get any offers for aaaaaages?? That's annoying.

Both DH and I think it wuold be a load off everyone's mind if he actually got some offers in as DS is feeling pretty demotivated and worthless atm.

Piggywaspushed · 23/11/2018 10:21

wine - all fab universities. Cardiff, Norwich and Nottingham are great student cities.

My DS wasn't keen on UEA in the end (because the accommodation was prison like: it really was!) but did like NTU : and that's saying something coming from him!

minesawine · 23/11/2018 11:10

Hi Piggy I agree with your DS. I am not that keen on UEA, and it just seems to be a bit away from any life. My favorite is NTU, which looks great for students. He liked Loughborough best, but I wasn't that fussed.

We have asked the school to wait until his mocks are marked before they include his predicted grades on his UCAS application, as he has been worked like a bloody trooper since September and hopes to get higher grades than in Year 12. I am very proud of him.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 23/11/2018 11:41

Both DH and I think it wuold be a load off everyone's mind if he actually got some offers in as DS is feeling pretty demotivated and worthless atm. I feel your frustration Piggy. Agree that it would be motivating to get some offers in hand sooner rather than later - it makes the hard work seem worthwhile.
