Here we go!

Has she looked at liberal arts courses at all? It just allows that same degree of module flexibility and would let her do all 3. DD1 is holding places at Durham (ask for A*AA) and Newcastle (ask for AAB I think) and liked the Nottingham course structure (asks for AAA I think) but didn’t apply. I think the structure varies but I know at Durham it’s very like the Scottish universities (they can essentially drop down to joint honours in later years if they want less breadth).

(Just to note - I think Warwick’s “Liberal Arts” course is a totally different thing so don’t look at that for the same idea!)

FrameyMcFrame · 19/11/2018 20:06

Hi all!

Quick question. How long should it take to get some offers coming through after you send it in?

DD's went off on Friday evening and we haven't heard anything back at all yet.
Dd is now on her Italian exchange trip so she's not going to be checking her emails very often this week....

it seemed like quite a few on this thread had offers the next day?

I'm so worried. 😩

LIZS · 19/11/2018 20:12

It depends , dd had a few offers within the first week but is still waiting on one 8+ weeks later

PancakeMum6 · 19/11/2018 20:36

It’s only been one working day so I definitely wouldn’t worry! They won’t have got round to processing the application yet, it won’t be anything meaningful.

DD only heard from Man Met and Northumbria within 24 hours - she’s already achieved 3A*s at A level and they only ask for BBC/BCC. The others both took a few days (with asking grades of AAB so again she’d still exceeded that significantly) and Durham took over a week I believe. It totally depends on the university, course, time of application - 1 working day is definitely not cause for concern!!

Wine to get you through this stressful time...

AtiaoftheJulii · 19/11/2018 20:37

So it's basically been one working day. I think you can, and should, relax.

I think the early applications can get some early offers because there aren't many of them to look through. As volume increases, response rate may slow.

AtiaoftheJulii · 19/11/2018 20:40

Also, most people who apply to universities with offers that roughly match their predicted grades, will get at least 4 offers. It's just not something to worry about.

Yes, I'm on child #3. Yes, I am completely over it.

FrameyMcFrame · 19/11/2018 20:46

Thanks SmileWine

AtiaoftheJulii · 19/11/2018 20:55

Sorry, that came out arsier than I meant. Ultra-irritating day at work. But honestly, it's been no time, please don't worry yet or it's going to be an awfully long 9 months till results day!

Laniakea · 19/11/2018 23:27

good luck to ds for Manchester Atia x

AtiaoftheJulii · 19/11/2018 23:46

Ah thanks, his main worry is that I bought his train ticket using a ticket splitter sure, and he has a few different reserved seats! Grin

Laniakea · 20/11/2018 08:10

Grin is he up and back in a day?

FrameyMcFrame · 21/11/2018 07:45

Morning! DD just discovered she has 2 offers, Glasgow and Leeds. She's very happy!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 21/11/2018 08:18

That's great @FrameyMcFrame!!

What is her first choice and what is she studying? is it too early for Gin??

minesawine · 21/11/2018 12:38

Hi - My DS and I have been looking at reviews and league tables and there are so many of them, all giving different scores. Which reviews do you like and find the most helpful. So far Guardian and Student Hut seem to be quite good. Any help please.

Laniakea · 21/11/2018 13:06

good news Framey!

we looked at the Sunday Times one & the Times Higher Ed world rankings - the Guardian puts lots of emphasis on student satisfaction rankings. It's easier for us because dd's is such a niche course.

Nothing much happening here - dd got a copy of her reference which was fine, still haven't heard from Southampton. She's had offer day info through for Liverpool which she definitely doesn't want to go there but not Bangor (has visited already) or Cardiff (would like to visit as seen hasn't seen it yet).

Decorhate · 21/11/2018 17:19

I thought we were in a "lull" phase here but Ds has been invited to several offer holder days so that has to be organised now...

OP posts:
dancingdirty · 21/11/2018 18:36

Lovely to see all these offers congrats to all

DD now has 5 offers
Cardiff offered higher than predicted grades so prob out of the running
Sussex Surrey Reading and royal Holloway all acheivable.

Royal Holloway have said if she firms with them they will make it unconditional which would be fab. But they don't seem to offer the placement year for her course that the rest do...

We have some thinking to do

PancakeMum6 · 21/11/2018 19:57

Amazing stuff framey - knew she had nothing to worry about!

And well done to your DD dancingdirty. Does she have a preference or is it going to be a difficult few months of decision making?

dancingdirty · 21/11/2018 21:03

Sussex was top choice. But we did love Royal Holloway. We will mull it over for a bit I think.
Shebis contacting them about the placement year. If they don't do that at all I think she will firm Sussex

LIZS · 21/11/2018 21:17

Dd is having to complete an online form for Edinburgh about her fee status, anyone else? She has not had an offer from them and is UK resident. Confused

PancakeMum6 · 21/11/2018 21:26

DD1’s best friend is at Sussex (and got in with a dropped grade - offer was AAB and she got in with AAC). DD loves the campus - she went to visit a few weeks ago and came back enthusiastically telling me about a lovely market they hold regularly. The food in the union is also apparently really good. She’d definitely sing its praises (or at least the catering facilities)!!

celtiethree · 21/11/2018 21:44

LIZS Edinburgh is likely to have asked for the form as they are unsure of whether your DD is Scottish resident or rest of U.K. There is a cap on Scottish places, if rest of UK there is no cap. Therefore an offer will depend on residency status - better chance of an offer if rest of UK.

LIZS · 21/11/2018 21:46

True, but is that not clear from the info they already have? She was born abroad , might this have triggered it or are all not Scottish applicants asked to fill it in?

celtiethree · 21/11/2018 21:49

Not all Scottish students will be asked to complete, only applicants where they haven’t been able to determine fee status from the info provided.

Ontopofthesunset · 21/11/2018 21:50

DS got an offer earlier this week from Edinburgh with no need to fill in a fee status form. He's just checked as I asked him, and the info on the Edinburgh portal thingy says that it assumes he is UK resident for fees and quotes the £9250 (or thereabouts) figure as his fee.

He has offers from Bristol and Exeter too, and had an interview/visit at Manchester today so is pretty confident about that as they said the interview is more to confirm that applicants are happy with the course options they have chosen.
