Here we go!

The UEA campus rather reminded me of Warwick University but on a somehow more compact scale?

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 23/11/2018 13:14

@minesawine DD (and I) loved UEA campus-and there are some lovely newly built Halls she is hoping for a place in. We must have missed the prison cell ones on our tour maybe because dd went for the most expensive on the list Shock
I thought bucolic and lovely and could see her being very happy there-
in a Disney like moment during our tour some bunnies hopped by looking very sweet.
Loughborough very sporty and very long campus so felt very spread out.
They all go for nights out in Nottingham from there.
Nottingham Trent very smack in the middle of the city-rambunctious night life- great if that appeals.
Know students at all of the above and all happy-it's just picking the one that suits your criteria!

Ds's school added their reference and predicted grades within an hour of us pressing go and paying and he had two (unconditional) offers 12 hours later...

ElizabethBennetismybestfriend · 23/11/2018 19:13

Ucas form sent yesterday. First offer today from York. Not where she wants to go (too close to home for starters ) but Dd is so relieved to have one offer in so quickly.

Serin · 23/11/2018 19:41

DS had 2 interviews for adult nursing last week, both have made offers this week. He has 3 more to go, all of them offer something unique (one Welsh with BHS funding, one has foundation year if an offer holder does badly at A level and one he could commute to) .
He's s happy lad tonight.

Have to laugh DS was offered a place at a localish uni. was not keen on going there until he discovered it was the best in Europe for what he was studying. We barely saw him for the four years he was there, he lived in from the first day. The other son who was far flung in the summer came home every weekend he could and holidays.

PancakeMum6 · 23/11/2018 20:01

madmum I know for DD local cities (York included - it’s only 45 mins/an hour direct on the train) were ruled out on the basis that she knew them too well and had too many childhood memories and friends based there. It wouldn’t feel like a fresh start. That’s also slightly veering her off Newcastle - almost too familiar with all her friends there (even though it’s he perfect distance). Durham is edging ahead for us...

That’s great Serin! So impressive for nursing. I bet he’s going to have a nice weekend...

And well done Dangling and Elizabeth’s DC. Must be nice for them to have offers through so soon!

TheFrendo · 23/11/2018 20:05

This year's univeristy applicants were the first to sit the new GCSE 1-9 in maths and English.

In this cohort, the uptake for maths A level is down and further maths well down (maybe >50% - anecdotal) on previous years.

I suspect that some institutions offering course that require maths and/or further maths will have much reduced numbers of drop their entry requirements.

Any pointers from those involved in admissions?

UAEMum · 24/11/2018 06:37

My son got an offer for Aston. Direct entry into Year 2. Its probably his first choice. Waiting for the other 4.

Lililili · 24/11/2018 11:19

danglingmod wow that’s impressive and reassuring! Well done!

bigTillyMint · 24/11/2018 13:13

Pancakemum, and any others with potential Durham DC, DSs gf is home this weekend. She seems to be enjoying it there, has made friends, joined clubs and is managing the course OK. She says she is the only one not from a private/public or grammar school, and lots of clubs/socs/balls v expensive. Happy to PM anyone further info if wanted!

bigTillyMint · 24/11/2018 13:14

Should have said only one on her corridor!

Wiifitmama · 24/11/2018 15:43

Does anyone know what the minimum maintenance grant they are guaranteed regardless of parental income? The information seems surprisingly hard to find! I keep seeing "up to" figures. I thought there was an amount that they could borrow even if parental income was higher? Any ideas?

LIZS · 24/11/2018 16:04

Just under 5k pa iirc.

LIZS · 24/11/2018 16:05

And it is a loan not grant.

Wiifitmama · 24/11/2018 16:10

Sorry, yes - I used the wrong word. I knew it was a loan. OK thanks!

EllieFredrickson · 24/11/2018 16:15

Frendo

DD applying for Physics and doing A levels in maths and further maths along with physics and one other.

She has 3 offers to date and none of these seem to be different from last year's standard offers.

We are still waiting to hear on an Oxford interview...

howabout · 24/11/2018 16:25

It is less than £5k. Just over £3k living at home and just over £4k away from home for 18/19. More if away from home in London.

www.moneysavingexpert.com/students/student-loans-tuition-fees-changes/#tips-9

Amounts and thresh holds are different under Scottish system.

Figures for Scotland are different.

howabout · 24/11/2018 16:28

The other thing to bear in mind is that students eligible for the maximum loan may also be able to apply for bursaries from the University. This can mean their income is about £2k higher than the maximum loan would suggest and leaves minimum loan students with an even bigger shortfall relative to them.

Wiifitmama · 24/11/2018 16:30

That link is just what I was looking for, thanks!

howabout · 24/11/2018 16:31

No problem. Smile

TheFrendo · 24/11/2018 16:53

EllieFredrickson,

I think the pressure to accept lower grades to fill places will be felt by institutions lower down the rankings.

LIZS · 24/11/2018 17:45

Ds says his ml is £5151 this year (London weighting) although this is slightly less than previous years, not sure why.

AtiaoftheJulii · 24/11/2018 18:10

Is it his final year? You get less in your last year

LIZS · 24/11/2018 18:11

Yes it would be.
