Aurea Well done to him!!🎉🎉 And pour a glass of fizz for yourself 🥂

Monkey2001 · 16/11/2018 22:35

Aurea - Woo hoo! Cake

Decorhate DS has Sheffield interview. Should get one for Newcastle. Waiting for BMAT results. We love Sheffield, it is second preference (after Cambridge) - great transparency (they have been sent a full list of the questions they will be asked!) and home of Arctic Monkeys (my monkey name a coincidence, I am not the fan!)

Lililili · 16/11/2018 22:48

So pleased for DD who now has offers from Bath, Cardiff and Bristol 😀. Cardiff and Bristol have taken into account her 2 early A levels so she has lovely low offers there whereas Bath are still asking for 3As.

Monkey2001 · 16/11/2018 23:23

Lilili - Well done to DD, but is she doing 5 A levels?!

Decorhate · 17/11/2018 06:52

Monkey2001 Ds likes Sheffield too. Not sure why dd didn't consider it for medicine - does it have a high UKCAT threshold? Her result was only average so she concentrated on BMAT ones or ones that didn't give as much weight to the UKCAT score

Laniakea It's annoying when the favourite is the last to reply

It is irritating how much DS's school drags its heels. I have just looked at my DS's friends PS for him becuase his school have had it for over two weeks for feedback and not got back to him. DS was hounded for his statetment because he missed their internal deadline but now it has not been looked at. Their systems are flawed , somehow. At my school, students give copies of PSs to a favoured or recommended teacher and we pretty much get it back to them within 24 hours.

I can also see on Unifrog that still only one teacher has written their reference and only two subjects have predicted grades. That bit is done in the summer terms at my school!

It's all a bit of a shambles and I cna't see how anyone at his place gets applications in before the deadline!

Obviously, this is my frustration, not his, but it is making him wonder what the fuss was about the deadline!

Monkey2001 · 17/11/2018 08:01

Decorhate yes, Sheffield selects for interview on UKCAT. Cut off was top 27% of UKCAT distribution this year.

His BMAT ones are Cambridge and Leeds. Isn't your DD at Leeds? He liked the course and the atmosphere in the med school there, but we are finding their process very opaque compared to his other choices. I have not been able to find out anything about where the BMAT bands have fallen in past years and DS has dropped 3 points on GCSEs so his BMAT band will matter. They are not assessing PS pre-interview this year and are interviewing 1,000 (used to be 600).

Decorhate · 17/11/2018 08:12

Yes dd is at Leeds. Very happy there. She mentioned about them not looking at PS when assessing who to interview now.

Things change every year of course in medical admissions. But in her day, Leeds tended not to over-offer places in comparison to other unis. Which meant they tended to be more forgiving about a dropped grade...

Are the BMAT results out yet?

Another thing, they are possibly interviewing more (and therefore not looking at PS's due to time constraints) because like several other med schools they are being made to increase their intake. Dd thinks this will force a change in the course content - med lecture halls won't have space for a bigger year group, lectures will have to take place elsewhere on campus & the course will become more PBL in style so they can divide the cohort up into smaller groups.

Apparently there is also going to be a med school in Bradford at some stage & she is not sure how that will impact on placements as Leeds students currently do some of their placements there.

I'm sure the above issues may apply to other med schools too so worth checking out potential future changes wherever your ds decides to go.

Hello! Can I join this thread? Not for a child of mine but I'm 27 and just applied to ucas last night to do midwifery! Interesting to read quick replies from unis. Mine has to go through my college tutor first who has been notoriously slow, and by the looks of things people are having the same problem!

Lililili · 17/11/2018 16:52

Monkey She is doing 3 A levels now, and did an AS last year, but did 2 early ones in year 11 which was slightly crazy.

madmum5811 · 17/11/2018 18:33

Bangor appears to be offering medicine now.

FrameyMcFrame · 17/11/2018 20:23

Welcome Parmaviolets.

We have finally pressed the big red button so hoping for the best now!

Parmaviolets13 · 17/11/2018 20:32

Thank you Framey! It's exciting isn't it! I wish it didn't have to go via my college as I think it'll take longer that way. Is it you or your son/daughter that's applied?

FrameyMcFrame · 17/11/2018 20:52

It's my DD, applying for joint honours Italian and English lit.

ElizabethBennetismybestfriend · 17/11/2018 20:56

Big button pressed. Dd hoping to study psychology.

Piggywaspushed · 17/11/2018 20:59

I'll be disappointed if/when we get to the end of this interminable application and there isn't an ACTUAL Big Red Button! Grin

Parmaviolets13 · 17/11/2018 21:32

Just a payment page unfortunately! 😂

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 17/11/2018 21:39
