Medicine 2020

EightToSixer · 30/09/2018 20:53

Ok, so I know it's super early, but I've been hovering at the medicine 18 and 19 threads. DD is keen to apply for medicine in 2020. Is anyone else in the same boat?
I thought it would be useful to share info and stories, it's all a very steep learning curve because despite me now having a PhD and working in a RG university I was late to learning and not a patch on my DD who is very driven and organised.
Hopefully people will find this group and we can share the rollercoaster of the next two years.

Honestly I don’t know if the high % grad entry is widespread or just a Sheffield thing. DD quite competitively minded and sees that getting a top decile result (get the more plum FY1 jobs) will be really hard for her as the grads base knowledge is way ahead. But overall a fab fab course and well suited to her....tonnes of hands on dissection, lots of clinical placement.....lots of variety. @Monkey2001....stay strong, this things not done til it’s done. He just needs one offer and nerves are bound to wrangle now. Its such a vocation for many people there are tonnes of routes into it, and the peeps at Sheffield have very varied backgrounds and stories. 🤞

Dd was helping at the imperial interviews last weds - she didn’t realise they got paid for it and was very happy that sitting blowing a whistle paid for dinner out for her and Boyf. She said it felt quite surreal to think it was a year since her interview. Imperial offer last year was AAA, they required the A to be chem or bio - on results day she was worried that she’d get A* in maths and miss her offer!

Monkey2001 · 13/01/2020 17:14

We have got very quiet on this thread, I guess it will be Feb and March when lots of decisions come in so that is when it will get very busy. Good luck to the Oxford people, hope to hear more good news tomorrow morning. It is just like the day before results day in August - maybe it is better not to know when to expect results Confused

speedyhedgehog · 13/01/2020 17:44

Are oxbridge offers out tomorrow? Sending good luck to your ds monkey!

MedSchoolRat · 13/01/2020 18:04

DD says her friends who applied for Oxbridge (any course, not just medicine) are on tenterhooks. It's good they get an early decision about offers.

Quiet is fine by me. Has been plenty busy, and the long haul of exam season isn't far away at all, now.

242Mummy · 13/01/2020 18:46

Good luck to Oxford applicants for Tuesday and Cambridge applicants for Wednesday! I'm on tenterhooks though DS1 seems very relaxed! His school issued a notice to staff today regarding applicants' mental health and request to be supportive!

ladsmum · 13/01/2020 20:13

Good Luck Monkey and Strawberry junior (and any others I've missed). Fingers crossed.
I agree Medschoolrat - enjoying the quiet, although my TSR usage is through the roof. Keep checking just in case one of DS's choices happens to hand out decisions a bit earlier than planned!

speedyhedgehog · 13/01/2020 21:47

Good luck to all the dc over the next 2 days
🤞

Strawberryorangess · 14/01/2020 00:42

Good luck to everyone !

Shangrilalala · 14/01/2020 15:10

Yes, hoping for good news from oxbridge applicants. 🤞

SleightOfMind · 14/01/2020 19:18

Interviews at Kent & Medway, Sheffield and Leics all under our belt. Aberdeen next month.
Surprising how the format and content varies so much.

Good luck everyone!

Baytreemum · 14/01/2020 21:35

Re first year course at Barts - a lot of lectures, histology, anatomy (prosection), clinical skills and training at gp surgery. One pbl a week in first term, two in term 2 - they discuss a case or disorder, research and learn the material then have to discuss/present the case/disorder without notes - it’s tough but they learn so much - they’re examined on it too in short answer papers. It means that the course covers a huge amount of ground - terms are long and intense. From term 2 they get student selected components too - dissection, placements, research projects or self- organised.

Monkey2001 · 14/01/2020 21:45

Thanks @Baytreemum , very informative. Smile

Baytreemum · 14/01/2020 22:32

No probs! Hopefully you’ll get good news very soon.

speedyhedgehog · 15/01/2020 10:23

DD has had an offer this morning from Birmingham - well kind of anyway, no details of what the offer is just that she will be receiving an offer. She is massively excited and I am a bit emotional - all our DC want this so much. I hope they all get good news soon. Can't believe it 😁

Monkey2001 · 15/01/2020 12:42

Congrats Speedy. Our news not good, rejection from Cambridge - he is so rubbish at interviews! Put in 5th choice of Biomed at Sheffield last night. Sad

speedyhedgehog · 15/01/2020 12:58

Oh no monkey! I'm so sorry. Hope he has better news from his other 3 choices. Its such a convoluted process, your DS deserves to get there in the end for all the perserverance he's shown.

christmaskit · 15/01/2020 14:10

So sorry to those who received a "no". All of our DC deserve to succeed. Such an achievement to even get to interview stage.
DS has received an offer from Cambridge. Can't quite believe it. I could burst with pride but I don't really have anyone to share it with IRL.

242Mummy · 15/01/2020 14:30

Oh Monkey I am so sorry to hear about your DS. Was really hoping that he'd get a place. Hopefully, he sees Medicine as the aim, not Cambridge? Keeping my fingers crossed for offers from the other 3.

christmaskit well done, your DD!

We're still waiting ....

EightToSixer · 15/01/2020 16:35

Sorry to hear about you DS Monkey. Oxbridge medicine courses are very different so I hope he has better luck at non-oxbridge choices.

Congratulations to those with Offers.

Long time since i logged on to here! Hope everyone is well and sounds like v busy with interviews! My dd switches to neuroscience and has offers at some fab places and if all goes well will go to Exeter and study at the lovely st Luke’s campus. Another option for anyone out there with teens keen on science/med 👍

ladsmum · 15/01/2020 18:01

@Monkey2001 So sad for your DS I know how keen he was on Cambridge. Maybe Sheffield's interview policy will have enabled him to show his true potential. I'm rooting for him.

Well done to @christmaskit and any other DC's with Oxbridge offers. Amazing achievement.

ladsmum · 15/01/2020 18:04

and well done @speedyhedgehog junior. I have a pharmacist colleague who is in first year GEM at B'ham and loving it .

FiveHoursSleep · 15/01/2020 19:18

DD has had an AAA offer from B'ham here. It's not her preferred uni but she feels she mucked up her Manchester interview, so she might consider it.
She also has two nursing offers and is no further forward in deciding what to accept!

SleightOfMind · 15/01/2020 20:21

Oh well done everyone with offers - such a relief after all this hard work.

For those of us still waiting or nursing a rejection, I’m holding on to how well DC have done to be called for interview in the first place.
