Medicine 2020

EightToSixer · 30/09/2018 20:53

Ok, so I know it's super early, but I've been hovering at the medicine 18 and 19 threads. DD is keen to apply for medicine in 2020. Is anyone else in the same boat?
I thought it would be useful to share info and stories, it's all a very steep learning curve because despite me now having a PhD and working in a RG university I was late to learning and not a patch on my DD who is very driven and organised.
Hopefully people will find this group and we can share the rollercoaster of the next two years.

Wishing her all the best of luck emummy

PiggyPokkyFool · 19/12/2019 12:56

And we are done! Where was your DD @emummy?

emummy · 19/12/2019 13:02

We were at Aberdeen. She feels it went badly but we'll see. We went for cake & shopping afterwards which helped!

PiggyPokkyFool · 19/12/2019 13:15

I think you never know with these things - if it was tough for her, it was probably tough for everyone. I ate the biggest slice of cake I have ever had between DDs interview and her going in for the Maths exam. 11 MMI stations followed by a maths test deserves a large quantity of sugary loveliness - and that’s just for the Mums. Good luck to all our DCs.

242Mummy · 19/12/2019 13:17

Sending your DD good vibes, emummy - it's so hard to gauge how an interview went, it's not over till the decision email arrives. Congratulations to those who have received offers already.

Are most pre-Christmas interviews finished now? Anyone being interviewed on Friday 20th? DS1 has done three and has another at Leeds on 21st Jan. Then, we wait! Confused

Strawberryoranges · 19/12/2019 18:48

Wishing your DC the beat, emummy!
11 MMI stations is a lot!

christmaskit · 19/12/2019 23:08

Deadly diseases top trumps going into DS's stocking here too. His stocking was a little light compared to other DCs' so that was a brilliant suggestion, thank you.

Monkey2001 · 20/12/2019 00:32

I think Amazon might have seen a spike in demand for Deadly Diseases! Not sure ours will arrive in time.

Pigment84 · 20/12/2019 08:37

Well done all those getting offers and interviews! Dd just had her first interview at UEA which went OK. Then checked her email and she had two interview offers from Leicester and Birmingham! Pleased but slightly annoyed as the one from Leicester was a reminder that she hadn't booked her interview yet - she never got the first email to book in the first place. Only two slots left. When she spoke to admissions apparently there were a few of them this had happened to! Just glad she did get it.

Monkey2001 · 20/12/2019 09:00

@Pigment84 a lot of the Leicester ones went to spam, including DS's - seems to be a particular issue for people with gmail accounts, so maybe it is still there.

Gòod luck to all of you, hòpe you and your DCs manage to put the anxiety aside and enjoy Christmas!

Pigment84 · 20/12/2019 09:20

We have checked and double checked and there was nothing! Anyway, we have found it!

Monkey2001 · 22/12/2019 12:12

Happy Christmas everyone. Hope the worries of this dreadful application process do not stop your DCs from enjoying themselves, hope 2020 brings everyone good news! Xmas Grin

EightToSixer · 22/12/2019 17:46

That’s lovely Monkey.

Merry Christmas all..... enjoy the deadly diseases 🎅

Happy Christmas everyone. Hope 2020 brings an offer each for all our dc. 🎅

EightToSixer · 02/01/2020 18:43

Happy New Year everyone. I hope you and your applicants have had a restful Christmas. V poor DD has had a nasty virus and cough so has done no work for a week. I think the rest will ultimately be good for her even though she doesn’t feel it now.

Question for you. DD got an email from Southampton entitled ‘your application to study medicine’. It has a lot of info in it about finance etc but It’s all generic there is no offer. and at the bottom says ‘accept your offer now, go to UCAS track’ but there is nothing on track out still says pending. Anyone with advice on this?

speedyhedgehog · 02/01/2020 22:25

No experience but that does sound promising - hopefully track will update soon for your DD and the celebrations can start!
No news for DD here - she's getting a bit impatient already but knows she could be in for a long wait yet. Fingers crossed for us all.

MedSchoolRat · 03/01/2020 12:46

DD's time management skills suck.
There, I'm putting it out there coz no one I can tell in real life.
She is not receptive to this information, either.
I think she may be burning out on exams & so on, lies underneath it all. Was always a risk. :(

ladsmum · 03/01/2020 14:03

I feel your pain @medschoolrat. I get grief from DS for micromanaging him but I fear not much would get done if I didn’t. Catch 22 - leave him to organise himself and risk that things don’t happen but he has to face the consequences or leap in sooner rather than later but miss the opportunity for him to grow up a bit. 😬

MedSchoolRat · 03/01/2020 15:18

DD's panic was about mock exams, interview & (most important of all!) a party all coming in next 7 days. She's had almost 3 weeks off school and couldn't have planned for all this before by timetabling & revising etc.... really?! Hence me getting the grumps.

Good News: DD has an offer from a London Uni. Subject to getting A*AA that includes chem&bio. This takes the pressure off the interview next week, thank goodness. Suddenly her life looks much more manageable (to her).

242Mummy · 03/01/2020 15:55

Congratulations MedSchoolRat's DD! That must be such a relief - to have one in the pocket. The stress of interviews and decisions is slowly creeping up again after a relaxed break. DS1 revising solidly for mocks which start next week; stoically getting on with things.

Monkey2001 · 03/01/2020 17:49

Great news MedSchoolRat! It looks like UCL went to work before most universities, which is a real kindness at this stressful time!

@EightToSixer I assume she has checked junk for offer....

Monkey2001 · 03/01/2020 18:28

There have been a few Southampton offers today on TSR, fingers crossed for your DD!

speedyhedgehog · 04/01/2020 09:54

Congrats to medschoolrat's dd! Lovely to have an offer!

Strawberryoranges · 06/01/2020 00:38

Congratulations to your DD medschoolrat!

I might be biased but UCL is the best university in the whole wide world. Studying medicine in London is an amazing experience.

DD also got an offer from UCL so now just waiting for Oxford. Smile

It’s getting so real!

Monkey2001 · 06/01/2020 16:34

Great news Strawberryoranges, nice to have one in the bag so that even if she does not get good news from Oxford, it will cushion the blow (although hopefully that will not be the outcome).

You say "just waiting for Oxford" - did she only apply to 2?
