Medicine 2020

EightToSixer · 30/09/2018 20:53

Ok, so I know it's super early, but I've been hovering at the medicine 18 and 19 threads. DD is keen to apply for medicine in 2020. Is anyone else in the same boat?
I thought it would be useful to share info and stories, it's all a very steep learning curve because despite me now having a PhD and working in a RG university I was late to learning and not a patch on my DD who is very driven and organised.
Hopefully people will find this group and we can share the rollercoaster of the next two years.

Nottingham today, second preference after Cambridge.
Has anyone had anything from Newcastle? DS still waiting to hear re interview or otherwise.

EightToSixer · 16/12/2019 13:28

Lovely catching up on interview news and hoping to hear some offers soon. I’ve been tied up leaving my job ready to start another one in January so have been out of the loop this past week but glad to have had a break from interviews.
Fingers crossed for all DC on this thread for interviews and offers.

We are officially done with interviews - for better or for worse! Time to get in the Christmas spirit now. Good luck with the new job sixer.

PiggyPokkyFool · 16/12/2019 22:19

DD1 was in the 1.15 slot at Nottingham today @christmaskit so our DC might have been together or crossed over.
What did you DS think? DD said they were a really pleasant bunch!
Just Thursday and we are done and dusted too @speedyhedgehog - I truly cannot wait and I may be found dancing on a london bound train circa 3.15pm on the 19th December!!

christmaskit · 17/12/2019 08:51

Piggy DS was in at 1.30! He said it was similar to Sheffield interview but without knowing the questions in advance. Challenging but "fine" again. Confused

christmaskit · 17/12/2019 14:15

DS just got his Newcastle interview!

PiggyPokkyFool · 17/12/2019 17:44

Amazing - I was talking to lots of the other parents @christmaskit - I might even have spoken to you if you hung around. Quite a few did and there was pacing and much coffee and chatter. DD thought the people were nice and I must say the parents were lovely too. Massive congratulations on another interview for your DS.

SummerbodyIwish · 17/12/2019 19:05

Another Newcastle invite here as well

Strawberryorangess · 17/12/2019 19:41

So many interviews. Good luck to all the prospective medics !

DD got her first medicine offer last Friday so offers are starting to be given out which is so exciting and scary at the same time.

She’s just returned from her interview at Oxford so very tired and rather drained. This whole medicine process is a lot! It’s crazy how much it’s changed from when I applied to study medicine. Not sure on the stats but I’d assume it’s more competitive and more is required of candidates.

ladsmum · 17/12/2019 19:51

@strawberryorangess - well done great news. Must really give her a boost.
I think we've still got a long wait ahead - possibly some news from Sunderland end of January but the others will be later I think.

Strawberryorangess · 18/12/2019 00:11

Getting an offer early is definitely calming but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter how late or early an offer comes as long as it comes! So no worries there. :)

Monkey2001 · 18/12/2019 00:49

Oooh, congratulations to little strawberry - where was it from? The only one I have seen giving out offers is Exeter, but Kings often give some out before Christmas. Most of our DC have a long wait.....

Strawberryoranges · 18/12/2019 11:03

Strawberryoranges · 18/12/2019 11:05

Sorry posted rather randomly. Bristol !
I’m not to sure Kings gives out offers before Christmas ? I should definitely check this. Yes unfortunately medicine offers come up quite late so a lot of the DC will be waiting quite a long time but it will be fine in the end.

Monkey2001 · 18/12/2019 13:14

That is a nice Christmas present from Bristol! They have moved from being the slowest to being one of the quickest - when they used to score the PS they took ages.

In case anybody is interested for Christmas gift inspirations, on last years thread somebody told us about the excellent anatomy colouring in books you can get. My DS was unimpressed by the idea of colouring in, but I have got one for his GF who also wants to do medicine (via biomed as her A levels were not great). You can get some for under £5 as stocking filler or bigger ones. See

mumsneedwine · 18/12/2019 14:35

Mine uses her anatomy colouring book a lot Another thing to buy cheaply is a knee hammer. Stethoscopes wait til they get to Uni as they get discount vouchers.

christmaskit · 18/12/2019 14:39

How lovely to actually have an offer.
Can't see DS getting any offers before Christmas.
Newcastle interview mid Jan. Right in the middle of mocks.
Hope everyone has a restful Christmas, then the real work starts for our DCs.

christmaskit · 18/12/2019 14:41

@PiggyPokkyFool: my DS was chatting to a "really nice" girl. Could well be the DD of a mumsnetter?

PiggyPokkyFool · 18/12/2019 14:58

Gosh @christmaskit - that would be funny especially if they both got an offer and took it! DD is usually shy but she is changing and she said she was chatting away to people.
I'm just getting my energy levels ready for DD to text me she is coming home so we can get everything ready to travel up to Stoke on Trent tonight for her 9am tomorrow.
I haven't see Keele before so I'll be trotting along behind her. Three hours tomorrow again including a maths and data handling test. DD is getting by on willpower and adrenaline at this stage.
Well done mini @strawberryoranges - may all our DC follow your DD's path to success. Happy Christmas all.

alreadytaken · 18/12/2019 21:48

anatomy colouring books may be laughed at initially - but they'll use them and may get another one later on for revision.

Get them pick up sticks, jenga or operation to practise their manual dexterity.

EightToSixer · 18/12/2019 21:56

I got DD a few medical Christmas gifts last year. A cheap stethoscope (£5 Amazon). Pens and highlighters made of syringes, a cuddly neurone soft toy, and the best was deadly diseases top trumps which we played all Christmas and learned a lot. Who would have thought syphilis would be so successful? 😃

OP posts:
ladsmum · 18/12/2019 23:40

Deadly diseases Top Trumps it is! Who would have thought this thread would help me with ideas for stocking fillers! Merry Christmas :)

Monkey2001 · 19/12/2019 09:45

Deadly diseases sounds like a brilliant stocking filler!

emummy · 19/12/2019 09:47

Sitting in a cafe waiting for DD to emerge from her interview! Fingers crossed it went ok. Good luck to all with interviews still to come

Monkey2001 · 19/12/2019 09:57

Hopefully a bit of Christmas spirit might take the edge off interview stress this week! Best of luck emummy.
