Welcome to the new thread! Can't believe we are on the 4th already

DD picked Cardiff as she was really impressed with their medicine open day and at the offer holder's day she really liked the CBL session they had. She also liked that they have placements all over Wales giving a lot of variety also in rural areas. (She eventually wants to work in a developing country, so thought this could be useful). Also the "early patient contact". But to be honest they nearly all say they have early patient contact, but sometimes it's quite hard to find out what they actually mean.

Leicester, she liked the campus, the new medical school building and the fact that it was just across the road from a park! They were her firm and insurance.

Bristol she liked initially, but in the end she decided she didn't want to be a guinea pig as they just changed their course. Plus it was the most expensive place to live.

Newcastle was her 4th. We only went for the interview as it's so far away, so I feel we know less about it really!

@adrinkofwater Thank you that's really helpful

Birmingham was pretty impressive tbh, lovely medical school across the road from the uni campus. Ticked most boxes for dd but she preferred the feel of Sheffield and Nottingham. Plus she wanted full dissection not prosection. At the open day the student implied anatomy was poorly taught but I guess that's only his opinion. Amazing hospital next to med school. Train station next to Med school too. Think dd liked the fact Nottingham used ps as part of application process whereas Birmingham didn't , it was purely on academics.

mumsneedwine · 12/09/2018 14:40

UEA was lovely. Beautiful campus and v friendly. Excellent course with early patient contact and communication lessons. Just a long way of the M11.

Oneteen · 12/09/2018 15:13

I know Bham Uni well because I used to work in Bham and my niece has just graduated from the Uni....also have another niece at Leeds Uni.

UEA would be great because my plan is to move to the Norfolk coast when DD goes to Uni...so she would not be too far away ...lots of people I know really rate UEA.

specialted · 12/09/2018 16:27

Katisha and mumsneedwine, dd just phoned Notts accommodation, they said you can arrive at any point over the weekend of 22nd and will find out room number etc then

MarchingFrogs · 12/09/2018 16:45

lots of people I know really rate UEA.

No experience of the Medical school, I'm afraid, but the university is quite popular with applicants from where we live and I have yet to come across an undergraduate who doesn't rate the place highly. The campus is lovely (even when looking more like the Kalahari than Norfolk, as it did when I last visited, July open day with DD).

DS1 is also a recent graduate of Birmingham (again, not Medicine) and is intending to stay there. The campus is a bit of a building site atm, but like the city centre, will be lovely when it's finishedSmile.

mumsneedwine · 12/09/2018 17:11

Thanks for info on Notts - DD was waiting for an email to tell her a time to arrive. First week timetable is printed off and her bedroom is pilled high with stuff.

Katisha · 12/09/2018 18:59

Specialted thanks for that. We'd read than an email would come grr DS has Cavendish hall which couldn't be further from the med school...

specialted · 12/09/2018 19:08

We were expecting an email too, maybe they will send one but it's getting a bit late!

mumsneedwine · 12/09/2018 19:16

Mines in Ancaster so equally as far. But it's only a 10/15 minute walk across campus and seem to be loads of them down that end. DD in various group chats, Medics, Halls, Medics in Halls. She's looking forward to the 'family' fancy dress party. Medic kids, their parents, grand parents etc. Sounds like 5th years take it v competitively

specialted · 12/09/2018 19:50

Does she have her medic parent yet?

mumsneedwine · 12/09/2018 20:16

Not yet. Not sure if they get them before they get there. I seem to know more about Medsoc and Freshers week than the course. Although she showed me her first week timetable today. She is so excited and wants to go to the Open day this weekend just for a look. Did point out she has 5 years there !

Katisha · 12/09/2018 21:08

Mumsneedwine where did your DD find her first week timetable?

Mommymoomitzi · 12/09/2018 22:38

Oh gosh. DD went out to a “charity pub crawl”. I got a photo at 1.30 am, she has a white tee on, that all her cohort had written on and a big “F” on her forehead (for fresher) which was written in permanent ink! She had her occ health at 8am, so was still tipsy. The occ health staff were lovely with them and said to enjoy Freshers. 5 girls walked home with her - she was buzzing with excitement. I feel loads better now that she is having fun. The first time I have ever been glad that she got tipsy!!!! It’s going to be great fun for your DC too - it will all be fine ladies x

specialted · 13/09/2018 07:31

Mommymoomitzi that is great news! So glad she's having fun and is happy, that's all you could ask for in week one! Phew!

swingofthings · 13/09/2018 08:15

Haha DD mentioned medic parent party and my menopausal absent mind thought it was a party inviting actual parents! Now I get why DD gave me 'the look' when I said it was a pity I wouldn't be able to join in Grin

swingofthings · 13/09/2018 08:18

Great news Mommy! Dropping DD today and she too isn't feeling well and think she might have a mild temperature. Hard to leave them when they are poorly.

Mommymoomitzi · 13/09/2018 08:31

Swingofthings - yes, my DD's "medic parents" are great! They really do look after her, although I was a tad peeved when she kept saying "oh my mom this and my dad that".... still, she did laugh, it's the first time in her life that she's had a dad who's actually cared for her! (that's another story!) Don't forget my DD was ill, when I dropped her off, this made me even more sad, but what a difference 48 hours made! Load her up with paracetamol and tell her to drink lots. My DD didn't go out for the first 2 nights, had early nights, but boy - is she making up for it now!!!! Hope today goes well, let us know x

Movingmountains · 13/09/2018 18:22

Swing - hope your DD okay. So many colds around at moment. We are off out for last meal together before we set off tomorrow. Mommymoomitzi will look out for girls with Fs on their head 😂

Mommymoomitzi · 13/09/2018 19:30

Movingmountains - so much love and luck to you all. Today’s “do” is a “no clothes” night. DD going out in a bath towel!! You have it all to come! Swing - how’s DD? Has the temp broken? Tell her to be patient and remind her that a couple of “off days” didn’t do my DD any harm at all. Love to you and yours too.

mumsneedwine · 13/09/2018 20:04

Notts people. Apparently timetable is on the email they got from Medical School ?? DD was bit vague - can send a copy if I can work out how.

Katisha · 13/09/2018 21:06

Mumsneedwine he's found it now. Unfortunately it went to the wrong email address...

specialted · 13/09/2018 21:46

Moving mountains hope everything goes ok tomorrow. Julian will probably there to help carry suitcases!!

Movingmountains · 13/09/2018 22:35

Ha ha Specialted - really hope so! We could do with the help 😂 - so much stuff
