Oxbridge Applicants 2019

evenstrangerthings · 15/07/2018 21:33

The 2018 Oxbridge Applicants Thread was started at the end of August last year, but with many students now sitting internal school exams rather than public AS exams, many will have Year 12 results in hand and some will be starting to prepare for applications to Oxford or Cambridge University.

Let's support each other in supporting our kids through this process, which may involve extra exams, multi-day interviews and extra application statements.

Do feel free to join the thread, even if your DC is on the fence about making an Oxbridge application. It would also be great to hear from those who have been through the Oxbridge process before!

I think Errol has nailed it. They must know that if they get a UCAS form in early mid-October for non medic/vet/dentistry courses, it's highly likely to include Oxbridge. They want to get their course as high up the student pecking order as possible, hence dangling that carrot.

DD1 had an interview at Imperial the week before her Cambridge one. Imperial emailed her back saying how impressed they were by her responses blah blah and they would be lowering her offer as a result of this. Her offer was the same as Cambridge's. We talked it all over and the cost of living in London as opposed to college accommodation costs in term time only went a long way in Cambridge's favour. However, DD1 maintains that it was great getting an interview in before Cambridge.

DD2 has a choice of dates for the "we're going to make you an offer" place. She has decided to try to make it the week before Cambridge too. Although it's more time away from school, she has mocks next term and would rather have done all the university stuff before Christmas so she can make up missed work before mocks. It makes sense to me.

Rianna · 18/11/2018 12:20

Makes sense . My guess is they’re going to be happy to take them later on anyway . He doesn’t want to go , so that’s fine . If there’s a need later on , he can talk to them .

DrMadelineMaxwell · 18/11/2018 22:49

I predict a tense week here as DD has her heart set on an interview for Cambridge.

Rianna · 19/11/2018 07:53

What does she want to studiy Madeline ? Is she expecting mail or letter ?

Lumpy76 · 19/11/2018 09:46

Well I don’t know what I’m more nervous about this week (except now not being nervous about my long dental appointment as it’s postponed until next week! 😳). DD has her second driving test on Wednesday morning, we are getting ever closer to finding out if she has an interview for Oxford (interviews scheduled for 3rd Dec for her subject - so it has to be soon) & DS2 (yr 12) has parents evening - he exceptionally capable but has ADHD so unless it’s his current obsession (magic) he struggles to actually get down to work....Hence he’s already said Maths is going to be awful! 🙄😖

Rianna · 19/11/2018 10:00

I vote for begging nervous about dental appointment 😂. Oxford interview is exciting, parents evening is for you find out if they tray your son well ( happiness far more important than results ) and driving tests ... well I failed 5 times and survived it all so what will be will be .
The dentist , if that worries you start breathing exercises etc to get through it !

Lumpy76 · 19/11/2018 10:46

Agreed on all fronts @Rianna! I think.....🙈😂

Rianna · 19/11/2018 15:06

We are also still waiting (maths, Cambridge). The college my ds applied to said offers for interview will be out by the end of this week. He is not bothered but the waiting is killing me!

olliepolly · 19/11/2018 21:12

We are waiting too, dd has her 18 th this week and I’m praying that she doesn’t get a rejection on her birthday. Started the week with a 20% chance of news on her birthday now its 25% as her college indicated would know either way by the 23rd ( Friday )
Steeling myself and rehearsing all the right things to say.

Couchpotato3 · 19/11/2018 21:25

Based on info from this thread (thank you again!) we are expecting to hear on Wednesday this week. DS has a special trip to London that day so that should keep his mind occupied for the day. He's had two mock interviews this week (his Head of Department arranged a swap with another school), so feeling that he has done pretty much all he can, apart from keeping on reading etc. Only 8 weeks until this is all over!!

Justanothermile · 19/11/2018 21:44

DD also had a mock interview today. This is new for her school I believe, but the interviewer had copies of all her submitted work and questioned her thoroughly and worked in the sector to which DD's subject might be applicable to. Dd said it was a valuable and positive experience and she feels that, once she warmed into it, she did well.

We are just waiting here too, I can't find out whether we hear from Keble via email or post but I'm sure we will find out one way or another soon enough.

Good luck all!

RedHelenB · 19/11/2018 23:05

Gettiient now. Dd just eats an nterview so I really hope they do give her one. At least by applying to Cambridge we now know her dyslexia is worse than we thought and she's now using a laptop which will hopefully make the actual A levels better.

RedHelenB · 19/11/2018 23:06

The first words should be Getting impatient now.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 19/11/2018 23:12

DD wants to go to Cambridge to study history - a very over subscribed subject, though not as much as maths, for example. Pre application test sat. No idea if she's waiting on a letter or an email.

RedHelenB · 20/11/2018 05:58

History in general seems oversubscribed as I noticed last year it sister really go into clearing at Russell group unis but maths and geography for example dI'd. Dd happy with her history offer from Liverpool so what will be will be.

Rianna · 20/11/2018 06:26

Justanothettermile : another Keble application here !

DrMadelineMaxwell · 20/11/2018 07:13

She has offers from York and Liverpool which she will be happy with as her 2 choices if this comes to nothing, so it won't be the end of the world.

Rianna · 20/11/2018 10:04

It’s never the end of the world but I do see my son a bit nervous about it all . He told me yesterday he did less well on his actual MAT than on the mock test . ( nerves ?). He’s got his heart set on oxford because it’s the most interesting course for him - it moves fastest . For a city , London would be most preferred . So I’m starting to get nervous about it as well tbh . Of course it’s not the end of the world .. but he would be disappointed :-(.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/11/2018 12:53

There's a spreadsheet of cambridge invitations from student room docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1t152NNxuHJgpPl-cNeEaA9s7rhYEuT6O-M8kLDE2jhQ/htmlview

Rianna · 21/11/2018 08:50

I’ve read on student room that Keble will send out letters by post . The first letters have gone out , but those outside the UK are understandably priority . I high means ‘ ours ‘ probably end of this week end will arrive end of Nov ... just like we knew already really :-)

Best not to get into the bulky/not bulky headfuck Coleoptera, it's too exhausting.

Clearly what you should be doing is steaming the envelope open! Grin

Rianna · 21/11/2018 14:49

Exciting ! Let us know !
