Oxbridge Applicants 2019

evenstrangerthings · 15/07/2018 21:33

The 2018 Oxbridge Applicants Thread was started at the end of August last year, but with many students now sitting internal school exams rather than public AS exams, many will have Year 12 results in hand and some will be starting to prepare for applications to Oxford or Cambridge University.

Let's support each other in supporting our kids through this process, which may involve extra exams, multi-day interviews and extra application statements.

Do feel free to join the thread, even if your DC is on the fence about making an Oxbridge application. It would also be great to hear from those who have been through the Oxbridge process before!

Well done on all the offers of interview. We are still waiting - it's killing me!

Aurea · 16/11/2018 20:52

Aaaw....thanks guys!

Lumpy76 · 16/11/2018 21:06

Where & what for @LittleSpace? Congrats to your ds!!

questioner123 · 16/11/2018 21:55

My DD got her interview invite from Oriel college today for Law. She is so happy and so pleased she chose to apply.

questioner123 · 16/11/2018 21:57

So proud of my DD 😊 we all cried happy tears today!

Lililili · 16/11/2018 22:44

My DD got an offer of one B from Bristol today so she is very happy. We just need to hear from Warwick and about the Cambridge interview now ...... nerve wracking!

AtiaoftheJulii · 16/11/2018 23:07

Woohoo LittleSpace and questioner! Exciting stuff!

I'll keep an eye on any tricky weather potential for interview season and report back.

Nice to know you've always got our backs OYBBK Grin

flipflop67 · 17/11/2018 00:24

Can I join in here please?

My dd has just been invited to interview at Cambridge for maths. We don't live in the UK and she applied on the basis that she wouldn't stand a chance!

She's excited but very nervous too. As are her parents. I just hope it'll be a good experience for her whatever the outcome.

Chucknology · 17/11/2018 05:21

Another Cambridge interview invitation here yesterday (also from Manchester after interview the day before).

Rianna · 17/11/2018 07:05

Hello all ,
My son is waiting to hear if he’s invited for an interview in Oxford , he’s applied to Kebbles for maths / Comp science . Has anyone had invites for maths interviews yet ? When can we expect a letter and will it be post or mail ?

Couchpotato3 · 17/11/2018 08:07

Thanks for posting the info from Brasenose. We can relax for a few days now!Smile

Rianna · 17/11/2018 08:24

Yep I just read it ...we still have to wait a couple of weeks then . Already an offer from warwick so not too much pressure .

LittleSpace · 17/11/2018 08:37

Maths / Cambridge. From an Academy Trust which has schools in special measures - although his particular comprehensive is just about hanging on. Realistically I don't expect it to go any further to an actual offer, but am very proud of him.

He also has other offers including one from Bristol / Maths of AB so it doesn't matter. He is going to give it a shot & enjoy the experience though.

TheFrendo · 17/11/2018 09:39

LittleSpace, that is a low offer from Bristol. My son's Bristol offer was more like A*, A, A. I would ask him but he is horizontal, enjoying the weekend.

Well done to all who have got an interview.

evenstrangerthings · 17/11/2018 10:20

It's so nice to hear about all the interview invites! It (almost) helps to keep my mind off my DS's imminent invite/rejection. Best wishes to everyone!

Dd4 also has an interview and is on a gap year having got her results last summer.

Malbecfan · 17/11/2018 12:22

Congratulations to everyone: @altea, @Ateaofthejulii, @LittleSpace, @questioner123, @flipflop67 and @Chucknology. We too are delighted because DD2 has just received a letter (no email) from Robinson inviting her for interview. She has had a really horrid week at school (due to hideous back-stabbing classmates, although some lovely comments from people in her year who sympathise) and this is just the boost she needs to put it all behind her. She now has 1 offer, 2 interviews and one interview that said they will be making an offer anyway. Only Durham to go...!

now has 1 offer, 2 interviews and one interview that said they will be making an offer anyway. @malbecfan - we've had a couple of those too. Is it a marketing thing? It seems divisive unless they are offering expenses to some students. Also it's yet more time out of school when it's not clear how important it is.

Rianna · 18/11/2018 07:17

Chuck I think it’s a bit like that : I think its more to show the uni than to assees or children .
My son has decided not to go to one as already accepted by a choice higher on his list . It’s waiting for Imperial and Oxford now .

ErrolTheDragon · 18/11/2018 09:35

one interview that said they will be making an offer anyway

All of the courses DD applied to interviewed - mostly nice chats, more them trying to sell themselves to her than the other way round. While the unis don't know where else each candidate has applied to, they can make an educated guess who they're pitching against, with few exceptions (Oxbridge, vet/med, top London, one or two others) it's a buyers market for the students nowadays. The interview days all included tours of the department (especially the labs) and accommodation, better than open days, so there was no need to bother with offer holders visits.

While DD was reasonably sure she'd get an offer from all her other 4 choices, in a couple of cases it seemed like the interview might slightly affect the grades of the offer.

Rianna · 18/11/2018 10:20

What are grades of offers ? Sorry it’s my first time although have a kid at uni - she just got a last moment place at clearing , not even an ucas form :-). My son is in a very strong position with A stars predicted and already an s for step and over 95 in mat mock so I’m pretty relaxed . Obviously not saying he gets automatically in everywhere , but that he will be fine wherever he goes .

Rianna · 18/11/2018 10:40

Thank you !

Rianna · 18/11/2018 10:43

He should be fine . It’s down to the interview . I do expect an offer , but would be nice having it . Sorry to sound smug - I’ve had my trouble with other kids but this one just sails through school and all that :-) .
