Education in Europe - why not travel abroad.

University education (taught in English) in Holland costs about 2000 Euros a year. Here in Luxembourg, some of us Brits prefer to send our English speaking teens to Dutch or German universities.

We pay about 400 euros a month for guaranteed accommodation.

I have one in Dublin, lower fees but higher living costs; it will be less expensive overall. However student finance loans are not available if you study abroad, so that will make it impossible for many people.

Why study abroad if you can get into a world class university here? Obviously other universities are world class too, but there are negatives about being away from home and fees. Also, if students can still do a year abroad from a uk university post Brexit, they get the best of both worlds.

UK unis are pretty toxic at the moment. And very expensive. I think it would do the UK good if some of its brightest young people studied abroad. The UK will soon be a very insular place.

What's the basis for the first statement? (UK universities have some of the most diverse populations in the world.)

And as for expense: you don't get a comparable deal from European universities, so one can't directly relate the fees.

I will encourage the one of my dcs who is very keen on languages to study abroad. Would be great if she could be enjoying uni on the continent rather than stuck here dealing with Brexit crap.

I find this country a very depressing place to be right now. I expect it to get much worse. Would prefer dd to spend a few years in a stable liberal democracy.

Well obviously, given the uncertainty over their fee status. For what it's worth the UK has far more world class universities than any other European country.

Where do your figures come from?

One course, but DS is just completing a Masters in London. The majority were non-UK Europeans. They would have applied after the Brexit vote, but seemed happy to have gained places. There are a number of other subjects where courses offered in London are world-class.

But surely up to your DC to decide what suits them best

Will be interesting to see how 'world class' our venerable institutions are regarded as being, post Brexit; with its clear isolationist message, The abandonment by international academics, the downgrading of its degrees....

However, tho I am a remainer, I recognise that Britain needs the slap Brexit will give it, bolstered by it being' the will of the people', it will make a lot of people grow up.... the clever and/or wealthy already have their outs. My family are neither particularly either, but we do hold Antipodean passports. I expect them to make their futures abroad.

Most students aren't particularly. Of those that are very few are actively promoting the sort of shit you've mentioned.

Is your child likely to be involved in student politics? Do they want to study abroad?

Pample - it's a concern, but won't really impact on undergraduate teaching. So no brexit crap to deal with for students. Plenty for managers...

Research and post grad study will be highly impacted. The quality and impact of our universities is measured on the research output and quality. This is where all the innovation happens.
