Looks like we need a new thread.

My little car is packed to bursting but we've somehow got it all in!
I can't wait to see her now - it's been less than a week but feels like ages already.
We have a hotel booked for tomorrow night so looking forward to dinner with her, then we'll clear out of the way when the rest of the freshers arrive at her college on Sunday.

Good luck to everyone - this is it!!

OhTheRoses · 29/09/2018 08:00

Good luck today.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/09/2018 08:34

Well done Lobster :)

Best wishes to everyone dropping today: try and enjoy it. Tis a beautiful day and both cities look particularly spectacular in the sunshine at this time of year.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/09/2018 17:50

Well, it's done and we did have a lovely day. It was actually really nice, the two of us. Hard leaving her, but I was brave.

Her room is gorgeous.

Home again. DS has an amazing room too, he couldn't quite believe his luck with how lovely it is. Almost identical to DH's 28 years ago, but now the built in cupboard plus staircase loo is rejigged into an ensuite. I got a bit teary when we said goodbye, and couldn't face the parents' buffet, it was just too busy and I thought I might burst into tears! However, quiet drive home and a cuppa and I'm doing ok for now. :)

OhTheRoses · 29/09/2018 18:11

Glad it went well oybbk. I am exhausted.

When are you planning to visit? I am thinking in about three weeks.

We left as planned at about 2pm today.

OhTheRoses · 29/09/2018 18:12

I didn't feel tearful at all, but dd was on the verge.

tstgug · 29/09/2018 18:38

uh-oh, ds is having a bit of a wobble tonight. Not sure he wants to go etc. Hope moving in today was okay for everyone! As usual he has far too much stuff. He's hoping even the jeep can fit all.

Hubbleisback · 29/09/2018 19:01

Well done everybody. DS goes Tuesday and still working on assignments!! Hmm

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/09/2018 19:12

Well done Panda :)
I feel a bit teary now and my stupid train is up the spout. We seem to be stuck in the middle of nowhere. I'm hoping dd is is doing OK. She has some sort of reception thingy that I hope she's gone to.

I think I might go in a couple of weeks cos she wants her bike and a few things we had to leave behind.

So I'm going to have the challenge of getting a bike across London Confused

Hope you get home safely OYBBK.

PandaG · 29/09/2018 19:24

Oh bugger re trains Kitten. All you need after an emotional day. FlowersCakeGin

YippeeTeenager · 29/09/2018 19:25

Kitten, I think the exhaustion makes you feel teary too. It’s been a long old haul getting to this point and counting down the days till they go leaves you emotionally drained. Hope you get home safely soon and a (hopefully) good nights sleep will make you feel better in the morning.

voilets · 29/09/2018 19:45

Nice to hear about your drop offs.

I felt a bit teary going there on a beautiful today - it felt momentous and indeed Cambridge and college looked so lovely.

Feel ashamed to say was very upset about my DD's room. It was as picture suggested. My DH joked, at Cambridge and we feel like paupers with her room Grin Grin Of course, it's servicable but friend going has 3 arm chairs in hers and girl along corridor and next door have beautiful square rooms with fireplaces. My DDs room is a tiny garret but it does have a sink and apparently some don't. She was initially disappointed but we've made it look pretty and she has nice neighbours.
I was able to joke with some parents who arrived and looked sad about their DDs room - 'don't worry my DD has one of those' and the mum said - 'we'll need an extension to fit all her things in.' We shared a laugh. The girl seemed nice and has been talking to my DD on a group chat - so they have something in common already!

Feel ashamed to say all of this Blush because my DD is at Cambridge and that makes her very lucky and a tiny, dark room is a small price to pay for potentially so much opportunity.
Good luck to all those newly there and going

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/09/2018 19:47

Gosh cake and gin look tempting! Where's the trolley service when you need it? Hmm

voilets · 29/09/2018 19:54

Hope that rain journey gets you home quickly OYBBK - you can have a tipple when you arrive!

Had cake myself in a service station! Cake Cake Grin

YippeeTeenager · 29/09/2018 19:54

Violets, I’m sorry about your DDs room, they really seem to vary but it’s only for a year and she probably won’t be spending that much time in it. On the plus side if it’s smaller she might be warmer and cosier when winter hits! If it looks pretty and she’s got a nice neighbour I’m sure she’ll be fine.

voilets · 29/09/2018 19:55

*train - not rainy at least

voilets · 29/09/2018 19:57

Thankyou yippee teenager. Apparently, you get much better rooms year two if you get lower grade room in yr one - so who know what we'll get next year! All done by ballot.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/09/2018 20:04

That's a bit rotten Voilets. The quality varies absolutely hugely. I hope that next year's room is totally awesome to make up for it.

I'm slightly nervous that dd has a ground floor room, in case anyone nabs her laptop or climbs in. Very unlikely I know but I hope she uses some common sense.

OP posts:
voilets · 29/09/2018 20:15

Thank you OYBBK. It is naturally worrying about their security but I think they seem to be pretty on it there with porters lodges etc.

goodbyestranger · 29/09/2018 20:21

I'm surprised your DD has a ground floor room OYBBK. I thought it was a fairly general policy to not allocate girls ground floor rooms. As you say, I'm sure it'll be fine - is she worried at all or are you voicing your own concerns? When DD1 went up she told me that was the policy at her college and I was a bit surprised - I found it a bit old fashioned I guess. But then thought perhaps it made sense.

My DC have had a wide variation in rooms in first year - from fabulous with en-suite and beautiful views to absolutely crappy. It doesn't seem to impact on their enjoyment at all.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/09/2018 20:24

I was surprised too Goodbye. She's not worried herself, though she did comment she would need to close the window when she left the room.

OP posts:
goodbyestranger · 29/09/2018 21:37

I guess different colleges, different policies and it's a good point about the porters. These are far safer environments than most. How you managed that move by train goodness knows - I definitely would have flailed. All credit!
