Brilliant news Specialted and SomersetS....celebrations this evening.....😀🎉🎉🎉

Abra1de · 07/03/2018 18:51

Congrats, Somerset!

2B1Gmum · 07/03/2018 19:03

Congrats Special & Somerset and to your dcs - Sheffield have been impressive on the communication front and of course in choosing future medics!

And Special your dds quick response in withdrawing from others must be a great help to admissions!

Drink - bad timing and more than frustrating to have teacher issues - I would give tutoring a try as it can be tailored exactly to suit - but also get in touch with a governor. You may remember dds really good biology teacher disappeared, a replacement appeared a week later but was not up to speed. I have a friend who is a governor (and whose dd is applying for medicine) and they were able to reassure me that the school were looking for another replacement. This has now been sorted and fingers crossed dd says lessons are better. But it is always a good idea to let the school know, they may Not realise students are struggling.

mumsneedwine · 07/03/2018 19:16

Congrats !! There could be a whole gang of them from this thread at Sheffield in September. Julian is my favourite person ever Smile

LoniceraJaponica · 07/03/2018 20:06

I am going to bow out of this thread now as DD has been rejected from all 4 for medicine. She is very upset.

Congratulations and good luck to the successful applicants.

I am so very sorry Lonerica. It's a brutal horrible process. I hope she aces her A levels and finds a place worthy of her.

mumsneedwine · 07/03/2018 20:08

And I made it worse by spelling your name wrong ☹️

adrinkofwater · 07/03/2018 20:17

Well done Somerset and specialted!

So sorry to hear your news Lonicera. I really hope your DD decides what's best for her to do now. Its so hard to be rejected. Flowers

LoniceraJaponica · 07/03/2018 20:31

TBH I didn't expect her to get through. She doesn't interview well as she is so lacking in confidence and is on meds for anxiety. I thought she was over reaching herself by applying to med school in the first place, although I have supported her all the way.

At least she did get one interview, and she has an offer to study a medical related degree at Nottingham. I will wait for the dust to settle and go through some other options with her when she feel better. It doesn't help that her boyfriend has an offer from Oxford.

💐Lonicera

watfordmummy · 07/03/2018 21:18

@LoniceraJaponica we're heading to Nottingham for place holder day for Bio med, lots of love sending your way. Xxxx

LoniceraJaponica · 07/03/2018 21:25

Thank you watfordmummy. DD had something through the post to say to expect an email for an offer holder day for the course she has an offer on, but hasn't heard from them yet. Do you think she should contact them?

So sorry to hear your news Lonicera - hope your DD is okay.
Congratulations Specialted and Somerset and to your DDs - the Facebook group is very active according to my DS. He has been really animated about it all evening. Says it is funny to think these could people who he will spend next 5 years with (fingers crossed!).

muddlethro · 07/03/2018 21:59

Lonicera, I am so sad to hear your news....so very sad for you both...😔💕

SomersetS · 07/03/2018 22:22

Lonicera I am so sorry to hear your news & so hope that your DD finds a Course & Uni where she will flourish & enjoy. Nottingham is a great city & beautiful Uni. She did so very well to get an interview and I can imagine how upsetting the news would be to you both. Wish you the very best of luck. 🍀

Minikew · 07/03/2018 22:52

Lonicera - sorry to hear the news. It's difficult to see kids go through this. I would advise your DD to really look into the alternative course offered by Notts and to explore other alternatives through UCAS extra before accepting the one from Notts. A Gap Year may be worth considering - my DD is now seriously considering this.

LoniceraJaponica · 07/03/2018 23:11

Thank you for all your good wishes. I agree that she should look at other courses. She is also considering applying again and taking a year out. She is worried about being lonely because all her friends and boyfriend will go to university in September.

So, if she rejects Nottingham she can go through UCAS Extra?

2B1Gmum · 07/03/2018 23:14

Lonicera, I am sorry to read your update - no other uni course is this harsh, even Oxbridge as they will get other offers for same subject at frat unis even if rejected.

My eldest studied at Nottingham, great Uni and very good student city - even so your dd needs to feel that way too. I would advise say yes to the alternative, there is nothing to loose, she can change her mind at any stage - even after a term of trying it (student debt will be written off if in first term).

Also I know a really bright student with anxiety under a doctor etc who is now one of a handful on a highly regarded graduate scheme in the pharma industry - her medic friend is quite envious!

Play the game, keep options open be it alternative course, fun:working gap year, whatever seems best for your dd. And make sure her boyfriend invites her to an Oxford ballSmile.

ProfessorLayton1 · 07/03/2018 23:22

LJ - 💐

Many don't get in first time for medicine, ask her to concentrate on her A levels. Good luck and best wishes for your Dd, well done her - having to go through this process when she has anxiety!

Minikew · 07/03/2018 23:29

Lonicera - she can view courses with vacancies now on UCAS extra and see if there is anything she is interested in before she decides on the alternative one offered by Notts (based at Derby??)

Minikew · 07/03/2018 23:36

@ 2B1Gmum - That is an interesting point you make re Student Finance; I didn't realise that. I will have a look into the terms and conditions re dropping a course in the first term just in case we are in that position.

mumsneedwine · 08/03/2018 07:39

Just sent the student finance forms off. That's a scary document for an 18 year old to sign 😳.

adrinkofwater · 08/03/2018 07:53

Can you do the student finance before they have formed on UCAS?

mumsneedwine · 08/03/2018 07:55

Yes. You can change the course as late as Sept. They recommend getting it in early as ensures payment all happens on time

Movingmountains · 08/03/2018 08:04

Oh my gosh I'd forgotten all about student finance! I was completely on it with DS1 but all the medicine stress has made me forget about the ordinary stuff! Thanks for reminding us mumsneedwine.
