Does the subject line say Action Required??!

LoniceraJaponica · 13/02/2018 22:57

Rejection from Edinburgh. 3 rejections, 1 interview and 1 offer for something else. I would love to know what the students with 4 interviews and 4 offers have that DD doesn't (apart from lack of medical experience due to her age)

I'm with you @LoniceraJaponica, I now have one very down DS, think he now sees the writing on the wall. Albeit has Southampton interview, and had an early St Andrews one.

Got our plan B place holder day in March, but this is oh so tough.

Mommymoomitzi · 13/02/2018 23:24

Lonicera and Watford. Try to keep positive, until the options run out and even then remember that lots don't get an offer until the second year that they try. Keep your DC focused on A levels, they are crucial now, remember clearing is more common than the med schools would have you think. Chin up - we are all here for each other and sending positive thoughts.

LoniceraJaponica · 13/02/2018 23:39

Thank you for the support, although DD wasn't sure she wanted to go to Edinburgh anyway. She is panicking about Thursday's interviews.

watfordmummy · 13/02/2018 23:45

Thank you I know, he's just not with me as off doing his residential part of his DofE so wasn't with him when he found out. Just want this all to be over, I think if I make it through without having had a heart attack I'll see it as a positive Smile.

He knew that Edinburgh was aspirational but thought his UKCat was good enough along with GCSEs. As people have said before it's so hard when they have friends with unconditionals with half the grades they have.

Thank god for Mumsnet.

Stevie3 · 14/02/2018 06:35

Sorry to hear your news lonicera and Watford, as mommy said keep yourselves and DC's positive. Never realised how challenging applying for medicine would be back in the summer when writing the personal statement seemed to be the hardest part! Don't forget how far DC's have come to even get interviews 😊. Lonicera lots of positive vibes for your DD we have interview on Thursday too, I shall be thinking of you

Waitingforsherlock · 14/02/2018 07:27

Edinburgh notoriously difficult to get in to if that is any consolation.

biscuit2000 · 14/02/2018 07:30

Lonicera and Watford sorry to read your news. Big hugs to you both and your DCs. It is hard for us mums not to take it personally too and not think "why would they not want you?"
While there are interviews and potential offers on the table there is still hope is the way I'm looking at it .
DH is much more pragmatic (easy for him on the sidelines as he hasn't been sucked into this drama!) and says DD will be absolutely fine whatever happens. She's smart, personable and funny and will do well whatever - I'm sure that's the same for all of your DCs....
Lonicera good luck for tomorrow. It only takes one 🤞🤞🤞

muddlethro · 14/02/2018 07:54

Lonicera, I’m so sorry to hear about Edinburgh and I really hope that your DD has a great interview tomorrow, despite this setback.
Watfordmummy, it must be so hard for you not having been with your DS as he got that disappointing news about Edinburgh, but don’t give up hope, as everyone keeps saying, they only need one! I knew of someone last year who didn’t get her offer from St Andrews until the very end of March.
It’s not over yet, and many applicants who reapply the following year, do get places... 😊

specialted · 14/02/2018 08:37

Really sorry Lonicera and Watford, this is such a tough process.
From what I gather Edinburgh is terrifically hard to get in to, and I think this year the ukcat scores have been abnormally high from those that applied.
DD toyed with the idea of applying but was put off by the fact that they are the only medical school that don't interview. She didn't see how they could pick potential doctors purely on paper.
Hopefully more offers will come our way very soon.

LoniceraJaponica · 14/02/2018 09:39

Thank you all. I really don't think that either DD or I gave enough thought to which universities to apply for. She went with her heart rather than tactically. Realistically, I think this will be a 2 year process, and at least she will have time to get some more work experience and get a higher UKCAT score, plus she will already have her A level grades (assuming she gets the right grades).

I will feel sad for her when all her friends go off to university, although her best friend is younger than her and will still be here.

Well done those who tried for Edinburgh. It was my DDs dream but we didn't even try as we felt she didn't stand a chance. She still wonders if she should of.

Lonicera we are rooting for you tomorrow. So hope your DD does well.

I think the other message I picked up during my research was "it's not over until end August". The message seemed to be that even if no offers now, work hard & get the grades & some are still successful in results day. Keep that weekend free for phoning about & last minute trips.

This process is ridiculously tough. A relentless year of pressure. DCs have done so well to get this far.

goodbyestranger · 14/02/2018 10:10

Lonicera that Edinburgh notification is tough for your DD ahead of an interview. I can only think of two students (not my own DC) in the past few years who have got four offers and both basically ticked every box: flawless grades in the case of one and near flawless with the other, good UKCAT, plenty of varied work experience, lots of extra curricular success, leadership roles at school and very good at interviews - confident, warm manner and clever. One chose Oxford the other Nottingham. But four offers is very much the exception, as you know. Best of luck for Thursday.

Movingmountains · 14/02/2018 10:36

So sorry to hear the Edinburgh news. It’s such a hard process. We are on train to Liverpool interview - DS very very nervous. With no news from the others he is definitely feeling the pressure!

LoniceraJaponica · 14/02/2018 10:38

Good luck with Liverpool Movingmountains
Thank you for your kind words Goodbye

Comisseration to those with rejections , we all know the strengths of our children and it is upsetting when they are not spotted by others .It really isn’t all over yet.For my d last year the key seemed to be to apply tactically work experience mostly non medical but a mix ,and then really graft for those grades + a modicum of luck .Her friends also applying were a terrific support to each other , one found a place in clearing and one is moving across to medicine from biomed next year .

SomersetS · 14/02/2018 11:52

Good luck with Liverpool movingmountains. So hope it goes well. We really liked Liverpool Uni & the city looked great.

Stevie3 · 14/02/2018 12:07

Good luck with Liverpool movingmountains - hope interview goes well Smile

movednorth · 14/02/2018 12:56

Oh this is all such torture! DD hasn't heard either way from Edinburgh yet... would just love ONE LITTLE OFFER, and we're running out of options. Please!!!!!! Watfordmummy, sounds like your nerves are as shredded as mine!

adrinkofwater · 14/02/2018 14:14

So sorry to hear about the Edinburgh rejections Sad. Hope you and your DC's can keep hoping for the ones you've not heard from yet.

Hope you hear soon movednorth. I know it's so hard waiting, but hopefully it will be good news.

SomersetS · 14/02/2018 16:15

Fingers & toes crossed Movednorth!

movednorth · 14/02/2018 16:59

Thank you everyone. No news yet ...

watfordmummy · 14/02/2018 18:09

@movednorth if you feel as though you are going to have a heart attack at any point, but outwardly are oozing positivity, the yip you're me SmileBlush

Mommymoomitzi · 14/02/2018 19:38

Moving mountains - how did it go? Lonicera - lots of luck for tomorrow. DD got an e-mail from Cardiff, heart stopped, but it was a survey. Funnily not everyone has received this - according to TSR ( guilt of a sly stalk 😉) DD thinking is it good to get it, bad to get it ?.....it's probably sent out randomly. It says offers at end of Feb. 1200 interviews and 600 offers. So might have to wait s while.
