Hopefully this is in time!

Itinerant have you heard from LSE and Durham yet? I know it won't banish the sadness of not getting an offer, but hopefully it would offer some comfort once the news has been processed.

marmite - don't leave this thread! We're all here for you. I'm sorry that it wasn't the news you were both hoping for.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 10/01/2018 12:46

Gosh, Im so sorry for my crassly timed post marmite. I take ages to write anything.
I'm so sorry that your DD and itenerant's DC did not get the news they wanted. That feeling sucks but it will pass in a short time I hope.
It must be incredibly hard for the young people. My Dd has been in a whatsapp group of Uniq participants from last summer. She told me that about 15/16 people left the group this morning and my heart ached for them. Sounds luke a great idea to form A group for Oxbridge applicants who came so close probably had a lucky escape 😊

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2018 12:53

I'm so sorry marmite and itinerant. I really feel for you both when you just want to be there for your dc right now.
This was always going to be a very up and down thread and it's rubbish for you.

I think a support thread would be a really good idea, because although it's our dc who it is happening to, it still is bound to have an impact on us and it's better to share that away from our dc.

dh thinks I'm a bit of a sap for getting a bit tearful for those who didn't get an offer.

Sorry to all those who didn't get an offer. Feel a bit crass for posting now.

Saker · 10/01/2018 13:17

Sorry to those whose Dcs didn't get offers. Marmite, I don't know if you saw upthread, Ds1 also got rejected for music. I'm afraid he wasn't really expecting it, as he felt the interviews had gone well (perhaps a touch over confident in his case Grin). It's a shame, but I am sure they can both enjoy music just as much elsewhere.

itinerant · 10/01/2018 13:23

Well I’ve had a few texts and he seems ok, but as PP has said, things would be clearer (and hopefully happier) if he heard from Durham and LSE soon. But, I think I have raised a fairly level-headed son who will understand that one door closes but another one always opens, and there are still many good things to come. Onwards and upwards!

Nearlyoldenoughtowearpurple · 10/01/2018 13:26

Dd got an offer, very happy house here.
So sorry for those who didn’t, really feel your pain, we were there last year.
Dd asked for feedback last year and found that quite helpful I think in finding where she missed out. Might be useful for some dc.

HesMyLobster · 10/01/2018 13:33

DD got an offer!

I hadn't cried, but just did a little one reading the posts on here.
I'm so sorry to those with bad news. My heart aches for you and your DC Thanks

Needmoresleep · 10/01/2018 13:36

Congratulations and commiserations.

This was us four years ago, made worse by the fact Warwick, UCL and LSE kept DS waiting till March. Two rejections one offer, but DS was absolutely happy with where he ended up, got a good first and has stayed on for a Masters, rejecting an offer from Oxford in the process. He is now awaiting the results of his PhD applications.

He now has no regrets about not getting a Cambridge offer. This was not so at the time. He was pretty much knocked for six, especially as he was only one of his friends who went through the spring term without a place. I realised that as an A* type boy, the problem was not Cambridge per se, but the fact that this was the first time he had really experienced rejection. Coinciding with the first application of his adult life. The solution, other than waiting it out, was to revert to doing family things like a weekly trip to the cinema. Whatever else goes wrong, family are there.

The silver lining is that he is now much more robust about rejection. Being willing to have a go is important. I don't know if everyone has seem this: www.princeton.edu/~joha/Johannes_Haushofer_CV_of_Failures.pdf but it might help put things in context.

I hope all the DC, wherever they end up, have a great time.

HingleMcCringleberry · 10/01/2018 13:39

Yes Lobster! Great news for you both (and as she’s doing Classics, I’m pretty happy too!)

numbereightyone · 10/01/2018 13:39

A few years ago a relative of mine was rejected and her friend was offered a place. My relative had a far better set of academics results than her BF so it was obviously very disappointing. Fast forward a few years and relative has had a wonderful time at her very highly regarded university, whereas BF hasn't enjoyed her time at university. Obviously a lot do really enjoy Oxbridge but I thought I should tell the story nevertheless.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2018 13:39

fatbottom, don't feel crass. It's a bitter sweet day, we can be proud of our dc and post about positive news as well as feeling really sad for those who weren't so lucky.

That's good news nearly, hoof and Lucycat :) well done to your dc.

I might have left people out, I'm juggling mn, student room (lurking to see how all the dc I was internally cheering on have done), messenger and fb at the moment during my lunch break. It's getting a little muddling.

Hey Lobster :) that's great news!

HarrietSmith, that's good to hear, thanks.

Rhubarb, what subject is your DS doing at Clare? Perhaps our DSs will meet!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2018 13:41

needmoresleep, that is such a good post :)

kaiserschmarrn · 10/01/2018 13:44

Needmoresleep, that's a great link. I would be very proud to have failed at so many things! Love the last line.

whiteroseredrose · 10/01/2018 13:49

So sorry for those DC who haven't had offers. But as I said earlier there is something to be said for longer less hectic terms. Delighted for those with offers though. Yay Risotto!

DS has just texted that he got in. No further details about which college or offer. Sadly some of his friends were rejected which took the edge off.

veraaloe · 10/01/2018 13:52

DS has an unconditional to study Ancient History at Oxford Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2018 13:52

well done to your ds whiterose :)

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2018 13:53

This is a great message about failure.

PandaG · 10/01/2018 14:27

Congratulations and commiserations. What a bittersweet day. DS has an offer, but I don't yet know what it is or where. He applied to Clare for engineering. X

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2018 14:43

some of you may not have seen that we have a parallel thread for parents of year 13 dc here too where we talk about all aspects of this bonkers year.
