Hopefully this is in time!

Oh dear Raindrops. Sign of stress do you think?? My DS very bad-tempered today!!

HesMyLobster · 07/01/2018 13:59

DD also has an exam Wednesday afternoon. Our post often doesn't arrive until late afternoon so we're very much hoping it will be an email here!
I'll be at work with limited phone access through the day - at least I'll be kept busy and not dwelling I suppose, but I'd have liked to be at home in case a hug is needed.

PandaG · 07/01/2018 14:10

Poor Dd Raindrops. Trying not to think about Weds too much here, but DS got quite a short temper today. Friends at church were asking this morning if he had heard, being kind but it does ramp the pressure up a bit.

Hardwickwhite · 07/01/2018 14:47

DD was definitely told it would be an email from Oxford.

marmiteloversunite · 07/01/2018 15:20

My Dd is swinging between wanting an offer and then being positive about her second choice and saying at least she won't be stressed as they want lower grades. I am swinging between worry and thinking about what to say if she doesn't get a place. Keep thinking "at least this time next week we will know and will have moved on with a plan"!

user1469682920 · 07/01/2018 15:36

The dc will also have to practise some diplomacy if they have multiple applicants from their school. Just adds to the management of the day !!

RaindropsAndSparkles · 07/01/2018 16:03

Definitely not a tummy bug this is her anxiety/remnants of eating disorder. But better than cutting. Sad. Unlikely to be good if she doesn't get an offer.

Hubble25 · 07/01/2018 16:07

Fingers crossed for youRaindrops. There is lots to suggest it will be good news for her this time.

MrsKnightley · 07/01/2018 16:18

DS (Oxford, last year) was expecting an e-mail but it was a letter and it arrived A DAY LATE!!! Just in case. Oxford seems to vary from college to college.

user1469682920 · 07/01/2018 16:20

Sorry to hear that Raindrops. Sounds like she s come a long way and done brilliantly. I hope this doesn’t knock her back. Fingers crossed for you.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/01/2018 16:20

That's really tough Raindrops. Poor kiddo.

Re email versus letter, I think that Oxford varies from college to college. Having lurked on Student Room, Brasenose are very good at posting information on there and they stated categorically it's a letter from them posted on 9th. Apparently other colleges send both. I think some colleges have said what they do on their websites and one even said what time they sent out emails but I can't remember who. But I don't know about LMH where Ds1 was allocated. What's worse is that we are going to Newcastle Thursday morning until Sunday evening, so if it is a letter and it is delayed we shan't know until Sunday!

Risotto301 · 07/01/2018 17:19

Marmite, agree with your "at least this time next week we will know and will have moved on with a plan"!

Kept telling DS (and myself) that Imperial is equally good or even better than Oxford! But honestly i know DS still prefers Oxford much more and I of course hope that his hard work pays off!
On one hand I think he has all the bullets to get an offer (stellar GCSEs, perfect AL predicted grades, excellent reference, and he saw one of the interviewers wrote "keen to learn" as comment on him - good sign?), but on the other hand i reckon all applicants are awesome and very competitive and think I shouldnt hold any hopes, better prepare for the worst...
Schizophrenia syndrome...

GeorgeTheHamster · 07/01/2018 17:31

We were expecting an email from Oxford this time last year. It was a letter. It was an offer, and it was very thin - two sheets of paper.

Hubble25 · 07/01/2018 17:38

Not sure if we are pessimists or realists in this house but definitely preparing for lack of offer. I think I insulted the professor was part of our feedback!!

TabbyTigger · 07/01/2018 17:43

We were expecting an email from Oxford this time last year. It was a letter. It was an offer, and it was very thin - two sheets of paper.

DS’s friend was also expecting a letter from Cambridge (Selwyn College) last year but her UCAS track actually updated before the letter actually arrived! She was at our house for lunch at the time (the pros for him and his friends of living 2 minutes from school, a definite con for me) too, so one of her parents called her later, having opened her letter before she got home, thinking they were breaking the good news only to find out she already knew Grin

Good luck to everyone! All your DC will do wonderfully, regardless of where they end up.

Helpuschoose · 07/01/2018 18:14

“Hubble25

Not sure if we are pessimists or realists in this house but definitely preparing for lack of offer.”

That’s definitely the view here Hubble. I think it’s easy to forget that every year really good candidates who would flourish at Oxford do get turned down. I really doubt there’s any clear blue water between the candidates who are at the bottom of a college’s acceptance list and the next couple of candidates down who end up just missing out. However rigourous the selection process there will be lots of kids who would’ve been just fine if given a place who will end up getting turned down on Wednesday. Statistically DC less rather than more likely to get in. Not being pessimistic but just feel that at this stage we have to be pretty realistic in this house because it’s more likely to be a no than a yes however well DC have apparently performed.

Hubble25 · 07/01/2018 18:42

Help - maybe realism with a glimmer of hope is the way to go.

Helpuschoose · 07/01/2018 18:47

Exactly. That’s the tine we’ve been going for. Tough though!!

Helpuschoose · 07/01/2018 18:49

HesMyLobster · 07/01/2018 22:00

"Realism with a glimmer of hope"

I like that - perfect description of the mood here too.

HesMyLobster · 07/01/2018 22:12

Saker thankyou for the info about Brasenose definitely sending a letter - that's where DD applied. She assumed (and we hoped!) it would be email. Our post is very unpredictable so it could be late afternoon before it arrives Confused

Raindrops your poor DD (and you) I truly hope it's good news for her, sounds like she's been through a lot.

Thanks for you. We're all anxious but I can't imagine how worried you must be for your DD.

Saker · 08/01/2018 08:11

From student room St John's say they will send out an email by 1pm. Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/01/2018 08:14

That's good to know Saker. I hope it's the case with other colleges. Is that Ox or Cam?

OP posts:
Saker · 08/01/2018 08:19

Sorry Oxford. I haven't been following Cambridge at all as Ds1 applied to Oxford. I think it is different for different colleges though. Some of them are good at giving information on their website and some not and some do letters and some emails and some both.
