The other thread filled up really quickly, with exciting talk of laundry, mattress toppers and lost property.

Here's where the rest of them settle in, get through freshers and the work gets serious.

That's a serious amount of money for two houses in Cambridge, even ex council houses are fetching nearly 300k.

Wow Oldie that was quite a lot to shell out in one week!
Am I right in thinking your twins are both at Bristol?
Hope they are settling in well. I enjoyed my Uni years there, and stayed on afterwards for quite a while too.

LineysRun · 10/10/2017 22:13

Juggling, I stayed on at my university city too, for the most part. Newcastle.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 10/10/2017 22:19

I know someone who had a blast in student days in Newcastle - a good student and party city from all accounts!

LineysRun · 10/10/2017 22:21

It's a wonderful place. I'm still attached to the university in an oblique and honorary way which I love.

GreenPolishToGo · 10/10/2017 22:29

Dingit I am shocked at the laundry bully. Your poor DD. I hope the drier eats his underpants.Angry

Good news the loan is finally through for your DS Liney. I hope you won't have much longer to wait until things are sorted out your end Twirly.

Sorry to hear so many DC are feeling down. I'm sure a lot of them are simply worn out. All these new things to cope with, all these new people to meet and the pressure of trying to fit in must take its toll. Especially when they're told they should be having the time of their lives. I'm sure it must be a lot easier once they've got into a mundane routine.

Haff words fail me on the two houses for partying. It's another world.

Horsemad · 10/10/2017 22:42

Similar to your DS's halls Liney, we paid £250 deposit and £666.25 before he'd even arrived!

Ours are also 'Managed Partnership'.

LineysRun · 10/10/2017 22:45

It was like going back to the bad old days of 'key money', Horsemad.

How on earth students who have no source of income other than their student loan are supposed to manage this magical feat, I really don't know.

Horsemad · 10/10/2017 22:48

I know, I feel really sorry for those kids. Sad

Horsemad · 10/10/2017 22:49

When DS1 went to Soton he didn't even have to pay a deposit, much to my amazement.

Blogwoman · 10/10/2017 22:55

Thinking of money, my DD has asked if anyone has come across a good budgeting app?

LineysRun · 10/10/2017 22:59

There's a budgeting app that gets mentioned on Credit Crunch here and I very helpfully can't remember what it is ...

MorvahRising · 10/10/2017 23:29

stonecircle DS's rent was taken from my account yesterday.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/10/2017 00:21

Shockat the two-house party! (DH commented after taking DD he was somewhat reassured by the rather ordinary and oldish cars being driven by the parents arriving at her college).

fairyofallthings · 11/10/2017 06:04

It was the same for us horsemad.

University is obviously out of reach for many due to finances. We are lucky as Dd gets a bursary from the university which is being saved for rent next year.

liney, what did you do to get deleted?!

JugglingFromHereToThere · 11/10/2017 07:37

I hope young people won't feel that Uni is out of reach due to finances, although I think some will feel this. One issue I think needs addressing is some kind of bursary for lower income families/ students to cover the settling in period before loans arrive. For DD her loan arrived during the first week after arrivals and registering, but we did have to pay £350 I think it was as a deposit on her Uni accommodation before that, plus the costs of getting her there, and something for the essentials to take with her.
Like others I feel for those who don't have some savings or resources to draw on during this time.
Fortunately DD had a savings account with contributions from grandparents.

fairyofallthings · 11/10/2017 07:41

Juggling - yes an advance payment for lower income families would be a fantastic idea. If I hadn't been saving bits and pieces DD wouldn't have been able to go - I only managed to pay her rent (which her loan won't cover unless she has about £500) because I'd saved £20 a month for 18 years.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 11/10/2017 07:44

Wow, credit to you fairy, that's some good saving!

Horsemad · 11/10/2017 08:13

That's good advance planning fairy. Smile

simbobs · 11/10/2017 08:19

My DD got a subject specific bursary of £1000, which will be paid in 2 parts. I had not considered telling her to keep some for next year's rent - I'm assuming that we are talking about a deposit. I will mention it when I see her. I, too, am shocked at the party house thing!

Stopyourhavering · 11/10/2017 08:44

Ds got a one off payment in first year, non means tested bursary of £2k from his university as he was a 'rest of UK student' going to Scottish Uni
Gets £1k paid in November and £1 k paid in February !
As a Welsh student attending Scottish Uni he also get the 4 th year of his degree ' for free- i.e. No fees to pay!'....obviously has to pay accommodation and food etc but it's a brilliant incentive...(he decided to go to same Uni as his sister as she'd had such a brilliant experience)

Non RG Uni there are other great universities other than RG but in top 30 in UK , Global top 20 for Young University and in World top 200, with Gold Award in teaching excellence

rogueantimatter · 11/10/2017 10:38

That must be a great help Stop. Numbers of scottish students at scottish unis are capped, as the unis get less funding for them. TBH I reckon too many people go to uni now....... Sorry to be political.

LineysRun · 11/10/2017 10:58

fairy, I technically broke talk guidelines, but I'm in touch with MNHQ and all good I hope.
