Continuation of the original thread which is now on to 40 page maximum.
Original thread (part 1) here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/2759621-Uni-offers-for-2017-start?

Most offers now received. My twins have had offers from their 4 and are currently deciding which will be firm and which insurance. One twin
( possibly two of them) is going to an offer holders' day coming up at Bristol next month with his friends from school.

Not interesting summer work, but DD has been waiting to be 18 for so long, she's lined herself up a bar job to start at the end of July.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 27/06/2017 07:30

I think DD might do some volunteering at a local community allotment place over the summer, I think that might be good experience towards future work somewhere like a nature reserve after a zoology degree - would be good to learn those practical outdoor skills such as gardening. She's also doing a couple of summer work experience projects. And then we've got a couple of short holiday breaks too. I think it might be difficult to find work to fit around the other things we're doing. I think we're more focused on her getting a job once at Uni if possible.

tobee · 27/06/2017 17:46

Just asked this on other thread but anyone else dc doing wjec English lit?

Lucysky2017 · 28/06/2017 13:20

Not my two. One at last yesterday submitted his Bristol accommodation application (he's gone abroad today so yesterday was his last day to do that) and hopefully his twin will do it soon.

Molly499 · 28/06/2017 14:07

Anyone's DC found interesting summer work?

My dd has landed a brilliant job in London doing digital media marketing for a new motoring social media platform (think well known 3 car guys). She finished her last exam on Monday and went straight to London to start work...so proud of her. The cost of being there will eat up most of her salary but it's fantastic experience and she's just loving it.

HSMMaCM · 28/06/2017 15:19

Molly that sounds great.

Dd had a card through today from her first choice uni, offering her early settling in because of special circumstances. It's really going to help her, so I'm pleased.

Lucysky2017 · 28/06/2017 16:17

Well done the Molly daughter. My chidlren always ignore my advice or most of it and neither is doing any work this summer. it might be slightly hard to fit in. Our summer holiday is in about 10 days' time. Then it is not that long until results day (although I suppose you could be working on that day). They know my views that work experience makes a huge difference and that in year 1 as a student you need to have a good think about what job you want after and at least by then get on with furthering that.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/06/2017 18:00

Wow, that sounds like it'll be a great experience, molly!

We're off on hols with DD on sunday (watersports for 2 weeks) and another week later on in wales, plus she's got a summer camp, got to practice loads before retaking driving test, plus she wants to teach herself 2 maths modules she didn't do and have DH teach her some of A level chemistry... tbh I can't see how she'd have time or energy for employment. Her subject is one for which they're definitely expected to do placements so a summer off now seems reasonable.

BehindTheBlueDoor · 29/06/2017 09:12

Final exam starting just about now then DS is done! No family holiday here until end of term but he has things planned with friends. I'm looking forward to all the cooking and tidying he's been promising to do once the exams are overWink.
Btw interesting article on BBC website about Edexcel C3 and C4 maths exams leak and how they are dealing with it. Hmmm! We'll see when results come out.....

ErrolTheDragon · 29/06/2017 09:43

NobleGiraffe started a thread with this link schoolsweek.co.uk/setting-the-record-straight-on-the-edexcel-a-level-exam-leaks/

BehindTheBlueDoor · 29/06/2017 10:59

Thanks. I hadn't found that. The Edexcel statement forms the substantive amount of the BBC article.

DogsandCats123 · 29/06/2017 21:23

Anyone have DC that think they've missed their vet med/ med offer?

RedHelenB · 29/06/2017 22:55

I think that is probably a common feeling dogsandcats but they won't know until results day! I always thought I'd done worse in exams than I had!

DogsandCats123 · 30/06/2017 00:33

I'm the one that thinks I've missed the grades! I only needed a B in chemistry as the uni reduced my offer but according to the unofficial mark schemes I am around 1.5% off (4 marks ish out 270) However, I also have special consideration that may get me an extra mark or two but I'm doubting it! (think no paper in an exam for 40 minutes!!).
I feel like they probably still won't accept me. I have an A* in EPQ relevant to the specialisation I'm interested in but I really think I messed up. I did over 550 hours of revision but I think chemistry is just not for me.

I have spoken to sixth form, started a new personal statement, checked which unis allow resits and applied for jobs to fund myself since my last exam on Tuesday. I'm still worried about the prospect of all these interviews again and was wondering if anyone felt the same/had DC that felt the same?

DogsandCats123 · 30/06/2017 00:35

Sorry for the really long post!
Oh and I've also secured extra work experience and I'm looking into going abroad e.g Africa if I could manage to fund it.

Lucysky2017 · 30/06/2017 06:49

One of my older chidren got on her course in the past when she was one grade down on one subject. It sounds like you are doing all the right things just in case. The special consideration might help too. Last year my sons' last surviving grandparent died about 2 days before their AS exams or one of them and the funeral was in half term (hundreds of miles away). Their school applied for special consideration and I think it did mean 1% or 2% difference.

RedHelenB · 30/06/2017 08:11

What's the phrase prepare for the worst but hope for the best. Don't spend all summer fretting, you may well be pleasantly surprised. Unofficial mark scenes are just that you don't know what the examiners will allow. Do you mean you didn't have the exam paper for a whole 40 minutes?

HSMMaCM · 30/06/2017 09:55

I lost the thread about DSA, but DD has been offered an early arrival at uni, so she can settle in before the rush. This will be great for her and will mean we can park with a car full of stuff easily.

DogsandCats123 · 30/06/2017 11:17

I had no way to answer the questions, yes. I cannot fault for school for how they've dealt with it though.
I feel like it's very unlikely to be accepted on a med course with a C, even if I got A A in biology and psychology (a grade above in each).

I think I'm pretty sure I've missed the grades.

eatyourveg · 30/06/2017 12:58

HSMMaCM do you mean this one?

Lucysky2017 · 30/06/2017 13:26

The prepare for the worst and hope for the best. What seems important at the time often isn't a few years on so there is no point in worrying about it.

RedHelenB · 30/06/2017 17:54

Surely the school gave you the correct amount of time once you did have the exam paper?

HSMMaCM · 30/06/2017 18:09

Thanks eat your veg. I'll try it now.

goodbyestranger · 30/06/2017 19:23

Dogs, as you'll no doubt know, Chemistry is the single most important subject for Medicine and presumably for VetMed too. I think a poster had a DD with an Oxford offer who got two A* and a B in Chemistry who lost her place fairly recently although another uni did accept her. C might be a step too far for any uni though. You may well be worrying far too much but I think prepare for the worst and hope for the best is very sound advice. If Chemistry really isn't your thing then do you want to put yourself through all that training, if you might struggle for years? Best of luck though, it may well turn out that you worry too much - in which case, if results are good, chalk a summer of worry down to experience and try to fret less in the future!

DogsandCats123 · 30/06/2017 19:41

Hi,
My offer only requires a B in chemistry anyway. I can do chemistry, just not the exams! My predicted grade is actually much higher than a C. But I just couldn't get my answers down on paper in the exam. My teachers keep telling me they really think I'll do it but I know I probably haven't.

I've been doing work experience since I was 14 and done multiple Veterinary based courses (even won awards for them). All the vet students I've met have said chemistry isn't really relevant to the actual degree.
I will resit and if I fail again I will do a diploma (a few unis accept these), failing that I will go abroad to study. I've never wanted to do anything else but I really think I've messed up this time- through panicking in the exams and also by running out of time.
