University offers for 2017 start (Part 2)

Continuation of the original thread which is now on to 40 page maximum.
Original thread (part 1) here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/2759621-Uni-offers-for-2017-start?

Most offers now received. My twins have had offers from their 4 and are currently deciding which will be firm and which insurance. One twin
( possibly two of them) is going to an offer holders' day coming up at Bristol next month with his friends from school.

My DS has DSA, we applied for fees loan only so he was eligible to get help with a mentor ( specilaist support) via DSA. He is now paying some of that loan off already with a family inheritance which he had before - but he needed to apply for a loan to get DSA support.

JanetBrown2015 · 20/04/2017 14:33

Mine have still not firmed their offers. I expect they will at the last minute presumably.

HSMMaCM · 20/04/2017 14:36

Finance has been confirmed. Offers still not firmed on ucas. Dsa assessment today. We're getting there slowly.

HSMMaCM · 21/04/2017 09:25

This decision is really stressing dd out. Does anyone know ... if she firms an unconditional offer and then changes her mind, will she end up with any finance debt, or will it simply not kick in if she turns down the space later?

I've tried searching for the answer, but I can only find information about dropping out during the first term.

LIZS · 21/04/2017 09:34

As I understand it Student Finance doesn't kick in until registration, usually during Freshers' week, and even then there is a short period in which to withdraw.

JanetBrown2015 · 21/04/2017 09:38

i think LIZS is right. I remember when mym daughter started at Bristol and got a provisional place only in her preferred hall - they said turn up on the day as always 5 or 6 people just don't turn up or change minds at last minute. I very much doubt if those last minute drop outs hda to pay student tuition fees as it is nto like a private sector company with a binding contract in the usual kind of way.

My two are a bit fed up of the only question family members asking them is which they've picked of Bristol or Durham. Mind you if they would get on and firm a choice that would stop and they could forget about it and just concentrate on A levels. I am happy with either choice (and indeed their back up).

dingit · 21/04/2017 09:59

What is it about last minute decisions. Dd finally ' pressed' the button last night. Now we can book accommodation and sort out finance ( applied but no confirmation). Then I can cross that off my worry list.

HSMMaCM · 21/04/2017 11:21

Thanks for the info. I'll pass it on to dd.

Waitingforsherlock · 22/04/2017 22:15

Hi Needmoresleep ds pressed the button tonight and he has plumped for Bath. Think he was most impressed with the sandwich element of their course. He loves Edinburgh as a place and I think he feels rather sad about not going there but he thinks that Bath 'makes sense' and that the course sounds right for him.

JanetBrown2015 · 22/04/2017 22:32

Next weekend is the earliest apparently one of mine will be deciding. It's risky if you leave it this late - what if they are in hospital for a week or the systems are over loaded? I would have done it by now, but there we are.

HSMMaCM · 22/04/2017 22:42

Congratulations to those whose dc have made the big decision. We are now at the point of saying to dd "what have you got to lose?" And "you can change your mind after you press the button, but you can't change your mind if you don't press it at all".

ErrolTheDragon · 22/04/2017 22:46

DD did her accommodation choices for Southampton, her insurance, today. So I think she's done everything she needs to at this stage.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 23/04/2017 08:03

Well done Errol - we've done everything except one lot of accommodation options.
Glad that Uni finance was very straight-forward for us.
DD doing lots of art at the moment but trying not to forget her other two subjects!

aginghippy · 23/04/2017 09:36

DD says she is not going to press the button until just before the deadline. It's less than 2 weeks away now. She thinks there is nothing to be gained by doing it sooner.

dingit · 23/04/2017 09:55

I've just shown dd this. She is not happy Grin

University offers for 2017 start (Part 2)
JanetBrown2015 · 23/04/2017 11:02

I will just have to trust the twins. If they both choose Bristol over Durham which I suspect then accommodation opens for applications in June so there is no disadvantage in firming first choices late I suppose but it would not be my way.

Well done to those who have gone ahead and pressed the button to accept / firm offers.

I don't interfere in their revision as they seem to know what works for them. There are not many weeks of school teaching left now. Apparently their teacher still has some of the history course to cover in class which seems extremely late.

BehindTheBlueDoor · 23/04/2017 12:57

DS has said he will make his choice today. I suspect he'll go for his unconditional at Lancaster despite needing the same grades for all his offered unis. He's getting v stressed about getting the grades he needs. I hope all other DCs are holding up out there, not to mention the parents/carers!

Ocies · 23/04/2017 13:53

I have been lurking a bit on this thread. Dd is taking a gap year this year having decided to apply for university once she had her a level results. Unfortunately her course choice was very competitive and despite being invited to interviews she was not offered a place. So after a lot of heart searching she has had a re-think and applied for a different course through Extra and I am pleased to report that she has been offered an unconditional place which she has now accepted. Whew!

JanetBrown2015 · 23/04/2017 14:35

Well done to the Ocies daughter. it will probably work out for the best. Things often seem to matter a lot at the time but at the end of the day don't.

voilets · 23/04/2017 20:18

Can I ask - does it seem that there are more unconditional offers than there used to be?
Good luck to your DS with their up coming exams. Stressful but soon an exciting time.

voilets · 23/04/2017 20:19

And your DD ! Should say good luck to all DC. Smile

JanetBrown2015 · 23/04/2017 20:25

V - yes. Universities are allowed to offer more places under the current loans scheme than in the past to people with highest grades although that is subject to their actually having physical space for those students so those perhaps easier to get into tend to tempt people with unconditional offers I think. My son will not accepting his unconditional offer. it is the easier university to get into of his 5 and he seems to think he'll probably get into his first choice.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 24/04/2017 08:52

Yes voilets, hopefully their hard work over the next couple of months will bring some exciting new opportunities in September, and an enjoyable summer break too 😊

teta · 24/04/2017 12:56

Can I just say Hi.
Dd just got her second offer on Saturday for Veterinary Medicine and will be putting Bristol first.Finance and halls need to be applied for soon I guess.I think June is the closing date for accommodation in Bristol but to be honest I am a bit clueless. Her offers took so long to come through I thought we were facing a gap year!

GetAHaircutCarl · 24/04/2017 13:03

We finally have responses from all universities here in CasaGetAHair.

Except RADA. Still one more round to go for fecking RADA!
