Could we have a handholding thread? I have two DCs going through UCSS at the moment, would love to obsess here so I can appear calm on the outside.
LNAT results go to the UNIs tomorrow I think, so offers could be rolling in soon for DD who has applied for law.

Glad to have stumbled on this thread - I can ask all the questions that I can't ask DS as he appears to be far too busy to diminish his mother's anguish.

He's applied for Cambridge so UCAS form all done and submitted, which is in fact a huge relief otherwise he'd have been fretting over it all through Christmas holidays when he needs to be studying for his mocks in Jan.

No offers yet, and just one acknowledgement from Newcastle - as far as I've been told anyway. But looking at other posts, I don't think any offers have yet been forthcoming for his choices - Imperial, Durham, Newcastle & Edinburgh.

Not doing EPQ as too busy with sport, and also applying to the states for some reason. I am ignoring this as there are perfectly good universities over here.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/10/2016 18:24

My DD's school gives predicted grades for UCAS which are realistically achievable if everything goes well. And yesterday they gave a second set which is their best guess of what will actually happen. I think this is probably a good approach to not exclude all possibility of an offer from an 'aspirational' choice but give the student guidance as to what would make sense for first and insurance choices once they have the offers.

GetAHaircutCarl · 26/10/2016 18:26

CQ both mine are applying to the US as well as UK.

Is your DS taking his SATs in London?

Me2017 · 26/10/2016 19:50

One of mine stopped the EPQ after one week as didn't see the point and have been rather railroaded into it by a teacher. Other twin is keeping his on. I am pretty relaxed about it - if they want to do it great; if they don't well he is probbably going to get into one of his choices anyway so if he just wants more time to lie down and think or sleep that's fine too. No US applications here (although they could if they wanted to).

We were told the predicted grades are aspirational at their school and may be even a grade above what they will get and not to assume the predictions are what they will get, which I don't think should be right. They should be what they say - predicted grades. Anyway hopefully the school knows best.

boocha · 27/10/2016 06:49

DD has an offer for Lancaster for law AAA (AAB if she gets an A in her EPQ) and an interview for York, still waiting to hear from Liverpool, Durham and Cambridge although Durham requires the LNAT which DD isn't doing until January and Cambridge is an interview too (maybe)

enolagayits0815 · 27/10/2016 07:06

We've been told that the grades are aspirational too but Ds has been predicted an A not an A when the teacher thinks he could get an A star, that's a pain as it means that he probably won't get an offer on a course he really likes which needs A starAa. Sorry for the bold, it got confused with the star

ErrolTheDragon · 27/10/2016 08:09

Maybe we should adopt a different character which isn't used as markup. A+ maybe? Or there's always Star but that's a bit flash!Grin

aginghippy · 27/10/2016 11:01

There is one subject my dd was thinking of dropping after AS and I wonder if the teacher told her she was predicted an A* as a way of bribing her to continue with it. Grin

If that was his strategy, it seems to have worked. She is continuing with the subject, is enjoying it and working hard for that A*.

jeanne16 · 27/10/2016 12:14

My DC has a 3 A offer from Warwick. We are delighted.

LittleHoHum · 27/10/2016 18:23

dd doesn't know her predicted grades. Based her listed universities on AS grades and has one offer so I guess they must have been ok.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/10/2016 18:34

Jeanne, thats good. Smile

Little, would the staff not tell her if she asked?

RedHelenB · 27/10/2016 18:42

My DD saw her reference which was just as well as there was an error and saw her predicted grades then too.

LittleHoHum · 27/10/2016 19:18

She has asked but no reply as yet. Doesn't like to ask again in front of people. I think dd's sixth form add references afterwards so they don't get to see them.

CQ · 27/10/2016 20:16

GetaHaircut he did his SATs in Oxford. Also has to sit a further physics/maths test I think for one of them. All have different processes which I can't keep up with. Luckily DS has an American teacher at his school who's helping him with all that.

He got an offer from Edinburgh today - AAA. Engineering of some sort but I can't even remember what flavour. His first offer - he's delighted, as am I as that's where I did my degree. Great great city.

enolagayits0815 · 27/10/2016 21:43

Excellent Jeanne.

Sadusername · 28/10/2016 11:07

Have any history applicants from England heard from Edinburgh yet? DD has offer from Glasgow. Got a feeling it is going to be a long wait?

Hollybollybingbong · 28/10/2016 11:15

Great news Boocha, CQ, Jeanne and everyone who's DCs are receiving offers, fingers crossed for everyone still waiting.
We had a minor panic over the fee status form for Cambridge, DS hadn't sent in proof of residence. He's emailed and sent it by post begging forgiveness! He received an offer from Durham which has given him food for thought.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/10/2016 11:29

Oh, thats reminded me, DD was asking about proof of residence last week, I found one of this year's utility bills but we don't keep stuff from 3 years back. I'm sure there's something else she can use, maybe she's already asked DH but I'd better check.

Hollybollybingbong · 28/10/2016 12:09

We're the same Errol, DH bins everything! I'm much less tidy and found an old bank statement, old mortgage statement and my driving licence. At last, my slovenly nature has come in handy! Still worried whether it's enough or the right sort of info for them.

jeanne16 · 28/10/2016 13:23

Hollybolly. May I ask what course your DS has applied for at Durham?

mayfly66 · 28/10/2016 14:50

DS applied to Edinburgh for History two years ago Sad along with two other RG's in England. His non-Edinburgh offers came through very quickly but he didn't hear from Edinburgh until late February. He received an offer within his predictions but by then had his heart set elsewhere.

CQ · 28/10/2016 15:04

Yes I was surprised to hear so quickly from Edinburgh as I'd heard they are always among the last to make offers.

DS has never uttered a word to me about proof of residence. Should I be worried? Could he have proved it himself with his own bank statement or something?

Hollybollybingbong · 28/10/2016 15:19

Hello Jeanne16, he applied for Computer Science Meng, he originally got an email saying they send out offers from January so were surprised by the offer. Colleges get allocated in February, he applied for Unviersity college.
CQ DS had to fill in an SAQ form by 22nd October and then the fee status form by 2nd November although the date varies from college to college. I'd missed it on their email but had seen it mentioned on Studentroom, panicked and eventually found the forms on the King's college website. They ask for it to be posted not emailed.
My DS is too laid back for me to leave the details for him, I tend to micromanage things when I'm not sure of what to do.

Here's the link www.kings.cam.ac.uk/sites/default/files/admissions/fee-status-data-protection-ums-form.pdf

Renaissancegirl · 28/10/2016 16:18

Hi, my DD has applied to Oxford, LSE, Durham, Edinburgh and UCL for an Archeology and Anthropology course. No offers as of yet just a series of questions from UCL that she had to submit with regards to why she chose that course and she has to submit 3 pieces of written work to Oxford. Does anyone know if these uni's have given out any offers/interviews yet? Would love to hear from anyone whose children are wanting to do similar.

CQ · 28/10/2016 16:47

Holly thanks for the info - I just had a panicky text conversation with DS. Got replies such as 'Possibly' and "I have no idea mum, why's it important?' and 'I think I ticked a box that said most people would tick this box'.

Gaaaaah. Brain the size of a planet and not an atom of common sense.

Having persevered it would now seem that the college he's applying to does not have to have this form back until 30th Nov. God only knows if he'd have stumbled across it in time, so FlowersWine for you Holly

Mental note to self to get a little more involved in the process.......
