Could we have a handholding thread? I have two DCs going through UCSS at the moment, would love to obsess here so I can appear calm on the outside.
LNAT results go to the UNIs tomorrow I think, so offers could be rolling in soon for DD who has applied for law.

I suppose good maths courses do want top grades in maths and further maths?

No. further maths is not essential outside the very top few places as not all pupils have the opportunity to take it.

Bristol, Exeter and Soton will in practice usually take AAA with an A in maths.

For those who get into Oxford, it should be straightforward to get the 2 A stars required in maths and FM. Most of those who take the Warwick offer do STEP to take the pressure off needing to get 3 A stars - this is why Warwick gives their offers this way, as they really want students to have done STEP.

Manchester has asked DS to come for an interview date with a fortnight's notice and I can't seem to find a return train ticket from where we live for less than £262, which is horrendous.

goodbyestranger · 25/10/2016 08:52

interview date Confused. interview day.

OddBoots · 25/10/2016 08:59

Is that a return ticket for just him or you both? Wow, that is a lot either way. What kind of part of the country do you live in?

Ilove · 25/10/2016 09:08

My 17 year old wants to do Maths - he's applied for Oxford, Warwick, Durham, St Andrews and Edinburgh.

No offers yet...

user1474361571 · 25/10/2016 09:09

Ask for an alternative date.

Pipkinhartley · 25/10/2016 10:09

Hi Goodbye, my sons Manchester interview day is 22 November so they have got dates that may give you more time to plan and arrange travel

hellsbells99 · 25/10/2016 10:12

They will have interview dates all the way through the application cycle which doesn't close until mid January. Has he got a railcard as this would reduce the price? Also please consider costs when he is at uni and wants to visit home! They don't always plan ahead.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/10/2016 10:29

Yes, get him to request a later date. DD had to for manc. Elec eng because the one they suggested was the same day as the cambridge exam.

goodbyestranger · 25/10/2016 10:38

Yes, thanks for the suggestion I think that's what he'll have to do - ask for a later date. I'm usually a wizz on cheap train tickets but this one has me stumped!

GetAHaircutCarl · 25/10/2016 10:48

I've got twins too!

And a bloody complicated and exhaustinf set of circumstances. I will be very glad when this is all done and dusted.

goodbyestranger · 25/10/2016 13:04

OddBoots in answer to your question, that is the cost of the only/ cheapest return train ticket that will get him there in time, for DS only. I've absolutely no desire to go too!

Me2017 · 25/10/2016 15:22

Yes with twins there are not just two at once but issues of which will do better - not that I think they really care to much but I would like them both to achieve what they want to achieve and where they will go and perhaps the parents needing to be in two places at the same time but then we did have child 2 and 3 in consecutive school and university years and we managed so I suppose it can't be much worse.

enolagayits0815 · 25/10/2016 15:51

Ds has his first offer in from his likely insurance choice, they want a B and a C for psychology.

MrsBernardBlack · 26/10/2016 14:22

Can I ask how they get the offers? Is it by email?

I've just asked DS, and he has no idea Hmm.

Mamia15 · 26/10/2016 14:41

UCAS Parents Guide

MrsBernardBlack · 26/10/2016 14:56

👍

enolagayits0815 · 26/10/2016 15:07

Ds got an email to say that track had been updated

Me2017 · 26/10/2016 16:15

Thanks for the link to the guide. I notice it does not mention the interest rate on the student loans presumably deilberately to mislead parents or keep them in the dark.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/10/2016 16:22

It's probably more that the student loans aren't their responsibility - as the rates could change, it's better to write a generic document which won't ever actually be wrong.

RedHelenB · 26/10/2016 16:29

goodbyestranger -would it work out cheaper if he stayed overnight? Think that's what dd will do if she gets an interview at Cardiff.

Doobydoo · 26/10/2016 16:33

Ooo help! When do they get predicted grades? It is impossible getting info from ds1.He hasnt finished his ps yet either.I had no idea they should be applying now.

RedHelenB · 26/10/2016 16:41

Predicted grades will be on their reference. If they have done AS levels it is usually the grade they got or maybe one higher.

Me2017 · 26/10/2016 17:08

Yes, I agree on predicted grades. At the last parents' evening early Sept some parents were going round lobbying for high predictions. I had never heard of that before. I thought the school's integrity was on the line if they over predicted and the universities would never trust them again if they got it too wrong. I think my children's school has worked out the predicted grades but I don't know what they are. If I had to guess they will be AAA or AA*A on the basis they got AAAA at AS and did pretty well in some of those exams. My fear is if the predictions are too high they might be given offers from the universities which are similarly high when if the predicted grades were AAA they might offers at that level. We shall see.

in y chidlren's school the first draft PS was done in July before end of term, then they had a draft back from their tutor by early Sept and now they should be or already have revised it having had some teacher in put.

Doobydoo · 26/10/2016 17:54

Well I pounded up the stairs and had a 'chat'....think it is all in hand Confused
