Could we have a handholding thread? I have two DCs going through UCSS at the moment, would love to obsess here so I can appear calm on the outside.
LNAT results go to the UNIs tomorrow I think, so offers could be rolling in soon for DD who has applied for law.

Thanks Liney - he got his other 4 offers within days so I think he is starting to accept that Warwick might not happen. He does like his 2nd choice so not end of the world.

periwinklepickspoppies · 17/12/2016 16:36

Ds has had about five emails from Cardiff trying to woo him but he hated the look of Cardiff so they are wasting their time. He phoned his original insurance choice to arrange to go and look round and they told him get on a train and show himself round so he's rejected those two and has two left. Neither have emailed him as far as I know but arranged applicant days.

Ooh, I always thought Durham sounded nice Carrie - a lovely old city and the college system sounds friendly, pastoral, and traditional?
I should have gone there!

Carriemac · 18/12/2016 09:43

Me too juggling :)

I went to Newcastle but our dept had strong links with Durham and both were brilliant, though so different.

I like Cardiff and so does DS. The city centre seemed fun and friendly over the weekend we were there and the Bay was stunning.

Timetogetup0630 · 18/12/2016 19:33

Liney Cardiff is a lovely lively city and not expensive to live there either.

Friends DD is at Durham and struggled first term, overwhelmed by the Public School educated students who were from another planet compared to hers.....

Timetogetup0630 · 18/12/2016 19:35

DD got an offer from Nottingham at 4am this morning. The email woke her up. Politics and International Relations. They want AAB and the course is always over subscribed. She seemed a bit surprised....

JugglingFromHereToThere · 19/12/2016 07:48

Nice to hear good things about Cardiff, especially the city, as DD interested in Uni of South Wales course at their campus just outside Cardiff (they have another campus in Cardiff too)
I think it would be a lovely part of the world to spend your student days, hopefully reasonably affordable too.
We're also looking at Swansea.
Courses at both also looking good.
Our other contender is Reading, waiting to hear from them after that encouraging interim email.
Also waiting to hear from Sheffield, but they are our most aspirational one.
We need to visit Reading and Swansea, and hopefully like one or both of those just as much. We like what we've heard so far.

LineyReborn · 19/12/2016 07:57

Morning, Time and Juggling. Yes, South Wales does seem like a thriving, lovely place and relatively affordable.

Home of Dr Who!

Timetogetup0630 · 19/12/2016 08:40

Juggling Swansea uni is practically on the beach!
But a bit grim on a wet or foggy day....
Cardiff has benefitted massively from lots of EU investment (grin) and being the home of the Welsh Assembley. The Docks and harbour are fantastic.

LineyReborn · 19/12/2016 08:42

When we visited Cardiff we also went to the town hall to see the statue of Boudicca and her daughters and I thought it was awesome.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 19/12/2016 09:34

If we end up finding ourselves in that part of the world I'll take DD and her friends out for tea and cake in Cardiff Bay and visit Boudicca Liney Xmas Smile

periwinklepickspoppies · 19/12/2016 10:31

We got put off Cardiff when we went as it was freezing cold, the organisation was appalling and the talk was a blatant sales pitch.

DurdleDurdle · 19/12/2016 11:22

None of my DCs went to Cardiff but I think it would be a great place to be a student.

Carriemac · 21/12/2016 09:48

Bristol offer for DD last night! A*Ab or AAA which is fair

OP posts:
aginghippy · 21/12/2016 10:36

Congrats Carriemac dd!

Bristol is the one my dd is still waiting for. They keep sending her holding emails.

Carriemac · 21/12/2016 10:56

Those 'holding' or 'happy christmas' emails are a curse!

MrsBernardBlack · 21/12/2016 19:35

DS has finally had an offer from St Andrews, and is quite pleased that it is AAB, as it is his second choice, first choice if he doesn't get an offer from Oxford.

BehindTheBlueDoor · 21/12/2016 20:03

My DS hoping for a physics offer from St A but understood it wouldn't be until January. Wonder if he'll be lucky before then.

TheMortificadosDragon · 21/12/2016 20:27

That sounds like a very reasonable offer from a good place, MrsBB, well done him! Smile

Needmoresleep · 22/12/2016 08:36

It's nice to hear of Christmas offers. I hope no one is cruel enough to send out rejections this week. And best wishes to all who are still waiting.

DD seems to be having a ball working in the Alps. So much so that we have barely heard from her. She says the snow is good, and she seems confident about cooking Christmas lunch for 14 strangers. Next year it is her turn.

iwanttobemissmarple · 22/12/2016 12:37

Well done to everyone dcs.

However & im sure it's been said by others before me - I went to Leeds university (30+ years ago) & only needed CDE!! Did better than that but even so- Times have changed!

JugglingFromHereToThere · 22/12/2016 16:03

DH and I both went to Bristol and got exactly the grades we needed to scrape in .... BBC for him and BCC for me. I think my DM probably did a university entrance exam followed by interview to go to Royal Holloway in the 50's.
So a lot changes in a generation, but some things the same ... still 5 initial choices to be narrowed down to 2, a firm and an insurance. I can see that choosing those two from offers made is going to be the next important decision. But good to have options Xmas Smile

EnormousTiger · 22/12/2016 17:41

(When I went we had to give order of preference of the 5 which was a nuisance as how high up put them determined whether you'd get offers from some of them)

Neither of mine has had an offer from Durham yet and one hasn't from Bristol.

BasiliskStare · 22/12/2016 19:39

Good friend of mine's Ds has had an offer from Manchester but neither Durham (which would be 1st choice) nor Exeter. Also still awaiting Bath. He is hoping no news is good news. Good luck to all.
